  • This was a 2-day 1-night backpacking trip where we went from Switzer Falls trailhead to Bear Canyon trail camp and then on to San Gabriel Peak before returning to Bear Canyon trail camp. The next day we stopped by both the lower and upper Switzer waterfalls. It rained about an inch overnight at camp. The date of this hike was May 4th and 5th, 2024. Check out Robert's video from this trip: • BEAR CANYON TRAIL CAMP...

    Enjoyed the video!
    We camped there on 3/16. On way to camp one of our members dropped his iPhone 14 in the raging creek, about 2 feet deep. We helped him look but couldn’t find the phone. Last week he received a Facebook message from a hiker who found his phone in 2 feet of water. Phone in perfect working condition after 6 weeks in the creek.
    I like Bear Canyon, we go there twice each year. Sometimes it’ll be full of Boy Scouts, but we always manage to find space.

      Thanks George! I can't believe I've never been there before after seeing how beautiful it is. We did have a group of Boy Scouts there but we were still able to find space. Amazing story about the iPhone. Cheers!

    Being from Socal and hiking the same trails I am really enjoying your content! I’m also learning how to connect all these trails like the Idlehour video you posted. Happy Trails!

      I'm glad you like the videos. You are right that it would be possible to connect this trail to the Idlehour trail. Happy trails to you too. Cheers!

    Bear Canyon trail camp is so Underrated. We did the traverse last year over to the dawn mine. I was surprised how much water was back there. I was even more surprised how packed the trail camp was when we got there. Must have been 20+ people that night.

      Yeah that was my first time there, and I can definitely see why it is so popular!

    There’s so many water crossings it’s crazy. You guys should see it in January

      We managed to keep our feet mostly dry all the way to the Bear Canyon trail camp, but it was tough.

      @@davidfeiler1279 I usually give up and just walk thru the water at some point. That water from bear creek is significantly colder than the arroyo. It makes your legs numb just passing through.

    The LA Times did an article on this a year ago highlighting the uptick of hikers on the trail

      Yeah it was pretty crowded, but we were there on a weekend so I guess that is to be expected.

    Would you say this hike is dangerous doing on your own? Due to wildlife such as mountain lions, bears etc?

    • @davidfeiler1279
      @davidfeiler1279  Před 2 měsíci

      There is always risk, but I believe it is low. In my many years of hiking I have only had a few bear encounters and one mountain lion encounter and all of them ran away pretty quickly.
