“Australia Ran Over The Spirit Of The Game With A Bulldozer” Piers Morgan Reacts To Action At Ashes

  • Piers Morgan reacts to the action on the last day of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.
Three MCC members were suspended after Australian captain Pat Cummins revealed his team experienced “aggressive and abusive” behaviour in the Long Room.
A flash point occurred on the eve of lunch on day five when Jonny Bairstow was dismissed in controversial fashion, after Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw the ball at the stumps at the conclusion of Cameron Green’s over.
Bairstow had already left his crease to speak with Ben Stokes, under the impression it was a dead ball with the over finished, but was given out and it saw the Lord’s crowd respond with hostility towards the tourists.
Piers says: "There are the rules of the game, which Australia clearly followed. And then there’s the spirit of the game, which Australia ran over with a bulldozer."

If Bairstow had looked where the ball was and respected Carey (doing his job) he wouldn’t have been out. (Also, didn’t Bairstow try to do this in the Aus first innings, but he wasn’t good enough?j)
If the MCC have an issue, then perhaps they should change the rules, instead of behaving like geriatric hooligans.
England have played an exiting style of cricket for the last year or so and have had many victories (11/15 from memory). But now they are up against a different opponent.
England seem to put a lot of pressure on their sporting teams and when things are going well, it’s great. But, when the tied turns ….
Most commentators have also recognised that England have not played well in this series. They have had the toss, the weather and been in game winning positions, but have not seen it through.

English captain Paul Collingwood against NZ was asked by umpire Mark Benson if he would reverse an out decision against NZ’s Grant Elliot. He replied no. The English bowler Ryan Sidebottom blocked Bensons path getting to the crease (possibly accidentally?) and the delay caused Elliot to be run out. So much for the spirit of cricket. As to cheating… English player Moeen Ali fined for ball tampering in the VERY FIRST TEST of THIS TEST SERIES!!! Australia suspended their best 3 players for doing the same, including the then top batsman in the world (he maybe still is?). Remember English Captain Michael Atherton ball tampering in 1994 etc etc etc. There are many English examples of “cheating”… like “lolly-gate” for example…. and today they are “the pot calling the kettle black”. The real issue in this 2nd Test for the English is that they lost the match.

Pier Morgan's view is complete bollocks. The batsman doesn't decide when the over ends; Carey's actions were continuous and instant. Bairstow countenanced Carey's actions by trying to do the same in both the first and 2nd tests - unsuccessfully because he is a 2nd-rate wicketkeeper who is being soundly outperformed by Carey in this series so far. Stuart Broad - a very loud critic will always be reviled for hitting a fat edge to slip in the 2013 Ashes and not leaving the crease. THAT particular piece of footage matches the underarm - Carey's actions never will.
My countryman McCullum has acted "outside the spirit of the game" on multiple occasions (taking out the Zimbabwe player on his first tour, the Murali in a massively embarrassing moment for all New Zealanders in 2016, and later Collingwood). Then we have Collingwood (part of England management) failing to withdraw an appeal for run out when Ryan Sidebottom rugby tackled Grant Elliott so badly that Elliott was seriously injured and couldn't continue.
The one thing Piers ignores is the unending amount of hypocrisy attaching to this Pommy team and their ridiculous comments. So for him to speak about integrity is laughable. Perhaps the only Pom to show any integrity is Bairstow who has kept is mouth shut in light of his schoolboy-stupid actions.

Bairstow did not leave the crease thinking the umpire had called 'over' and the ball was dead.
He has a habit of walking down the pitch and using his bat to pad-down the spot where the last delivery hit. To do that he keeps a mental image of the impact point. This image fades rather quickly, so he trots off soon as he can. When he was stumped, he trotted off without taking care if the ball was alive or not (which explains why Stokes was behind his own crease). In the video, Bairstow's eyes are fixed on the area of the last delivery and mindlessly walks toward it. Carey had previously observed Bairstow's habit and threw at the stumps.
And, the Brits need to explain why Bairstow tried to stump (also from way back) Labuschagne a few days earlier when Australia was 79-1 in over 30.

I would like Mr Morgan to disclose if he has ever played cricket - particularly as a dedicated batsman. If he ever has, he would well know, this is one of the oldest, and most well known rules (and ways to go out). As a batsman you learn this very early in school, then club cricket. You very much protect your wicket - by staying in your crease, until absolutely the over (and ball) is dead. It's total nonsense to say this dismissal "is not in the spirit of the game". This sort of dismissal happens ALL the time. And it is in the rule book for a very good reason. To respect the umpires authority (by declaring "over") and to respect other players, by not constantly dancing down the pitch and wrecking it. The same dismissal can also occur at the other end by the way (bowler inadvertently losing the ball or intending to break the stumps with the runner out of his/her crease). In this case, wicket keepers of ALL levels try to do it, at least once nearly every match. I have seen this exact same dismissal multiple times, and I have NEVER seen anybody recalled to the crease. Or complaining the fielding team "were not acting in the spirit of the game". To the contrary, usually a batsman is so embarrassed they keep walking straight off *before* the umpire gives their decision. What is not "in the spirit of the game", Mr Morgan is Bairstow, the England captain, other English players (and even people like yourself) not accepting the decision, then tainting the sport (putting it into disrepute), along with the MCC, and the umpires. By not accepting the decision quietly and respectfully both during the game, then by going on and on and on about it after the game, it is the *English* players "who are not acting in the spirit of the game". England is strangely producing pitches that resemble roads. Just so it helps Bazball. Is that good sports? really? We just finished India where the first tests were on pitches in which the match struggled to reach 3 days. Then in the final tests it was a pure road and impossible to get a wicket. None of that happens in Australia. We produce pitches to produce good cricket not the home team.

At the risk of agreeing with an Australian, that is true. I can understand the subcontinent producing spinners wickets when they were poor, and couldn't afford irrigation but that's no longer the case. The ICC should set standards for pitches, but India is very powerful and will never agree, mores the pity

@@joedennehy386 It made a couple of our kids Murphy and Kuhnmann look like superstars. Both of them have barely played first class State cricket. Yet were getting big bags of wickets in India. Then a complete batting paradise so drawing series was impossible. They also had a few pitches on the go, and weren't happy when Australia hung around so that the pitch could be identified the day before.
I reckon England is trying to play mind games and put more pressure on Australia. Not the right thing either. But having said that there is a chance that England is just trying to drive their own performance to be more competititve.

Whinging in defence of stupidity is expected of the English cricket team, just as winning is expected of the Australian team.

How much ‘spirit of the game’ was displayed by the entitled old men in the pavilion?
Maradonna cheated. The sandpaper was cheating and Chappell cheated. There was no cheating at Lords yesterday. If you want to compare apples to apples, have a look at Bairstows attempt to run out the Aussie batsman in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY in the previous innings.

When Elliot was run out by the English after colliding with the English bowler did the English apply the spirit of the game, nope. When Broad clearly edged the ball and was caught but for some bizarre reason was not given out, did the English apply the “spirit of the game”, nope. When Bairstow tried the very same thing to Marnus, did the English speak to Bairstow about the “spirit of the game”, nope. It’s laughable that the English try to preach about the moral high ground. Just another example of the English whinging after a loss. And that’s why they have the reputation as being sore losers.

There is a clear difference!!! Bairstow wasn’t trying to gain an advantage by walking out of his crease walking towards his teammate thinking the ball was dead. When Bairstow tried to stump Labuschagne in the 2 inning Marnus went out of his crease to play the ball and manipulate the English bowlers trying to gain an advantage and there is the rub. When somebody is trying to gain an advantage it’s in the spirit of the game to punish the player but in case of Bairstow it’s just a cheap shot undermining the spirit of the game which should be fair and just!!!

I think Piers and Broady are right. At 2-0 down in the Ashes, England need all the help they can get in order to not have their feelings hurt by being embarrassed at home. Therefore I've drawn up some new rules for the MCC to apply to only England:
    1. No stumpings (obviously)
    2. Electric wickie
    3. One hand, one bounce
    4. Can't get out first ball
    5. If the opposition hit a 6, its 6 and out
    6. When England lose, they also get a trophy
