this is a little cover of the german folk song 'Die Grenzwacht hielt im Osten'! i did a cover of just one verse on youtube shorts nearly a year ago now, and quite a few people seemed to enjoy it, so i thought i'd do a full cover :) please let me know if you liked it!!
as beautiful and tragic as this song is, it is also a product of its time and a product of german freikorps warfare in eastern europe and the baltics. it expresses, as well as the tragedy of war and loss, the feeling of german ownership of the baltic and eastern european regions, and these latter sentiments later became entrenched in nazi ideology, with which many of the freikorps fighters were later involved. all of this is to say: i share this song for its beautiful misery, for its reflection on the war and devastation that individual soldiers faced, but i do not share this song to in any way support the political narratives with which it was once associated, nor with modern political narratives which may use this song to represent themselves.
all in all, i thank you for listening, but i do not welcome any who sympathise with the colonial and racist ideologies which many use this song to uphold. so if those are your beliefs, i kindly ask you to reflect on them and how they are useful to you and the world, and if the beliefs then remain unchanged, i also ask you to take them elsewhere.

Leider hat man im Westen von 1918 und 1945 auch nichts gelernt daraus außer wir im Osten ❤ viele Grüße aus den von den Westalliierten 1991 annektierten Ostgebieten 🍀☮️❤

Very nice cover. Just a small correction: this song was sung by the Freikorps, WW1 german veterans who refused to demobilize immediately after the war and went to Eastern Europe to fight the Bolshevists. They then fought communist insurrectionists in Germany proper. They arguably saved Central and maybe even Western Europe from being annexed by the USSR. Very interesting men with a tragic history, as most of their songs reflect.

They were murderers, rapists, anti-semites, anti-Slavic thugs who would eventually join the Nazis, bully them into power, carry out Hitler’s atrocities, and then, to the repute of all human decency, they would load their mouths with loaded barrels and die for Hitler, who himself would admit that Nazi race science was nonsense.

do not exaggerate. It was Poland that won the war against the Soviet russia. Freikorps didn't help us. It was close to the capture of Poland - after that the revolution would spread to Germany and Western Europe.

Ab wann in etwa sind Lieder für Sie "alt"? Der Text ist von 1920, eine Melodie kam erst frühestens in den 1930ern hinzu.

@@Dr.Leymen Es ist ein altes Lied. Klar, ist so ein Begriff relativ, aber nach einem normalen menschlichen Verständnis ist es "alt". Vielleicht liegt das daran, dass wir das an unserer eigenen Lebensspanne messen. Würde ich statt 80 Jahren 500 Jahre werden, ja, dann wäre so ein Lied noch echt jung.

The raw soul that you manage to convey in your signing is immense, despite my poor German language skills I can easily pick up on the tone. The story of the Eastern Front during WW1 has always captured my interest, giving a very real human singing such an emotional piece has made it that much more captivating.

@@Dan-jp8jr The germans were in the Baltic states during and post WW1. This song wasn't necessarily about the Freikorps or post-WW1 anti-communist units. It's a strong generalization of all German units in the region from ww1-~1925

Haha danke! Ja, meine Deutsch ist nicht perfekt, weil ich in England wohne, aber ein Teil von meiner Familie kommt aus die Schweiz, and daher kann ich natürlich Deutsch sprechen (und singen, haha)! Eigentlich finde ich ein bisschen schwieriger, Deutsch zu singen - es ist nicht so einfach alle die Konsonanten schnell und melodisch auszusprechen. Froh, dass du verstehen könntest haha :')

@@Chapaev-fu5un Es geht nicht um das Land, das muss man nicht besitzen. Man kann auf dort hin in den Urlaub fahren. Es ist nur schade, was die Kommunisten draus gemacht haben und Riga ist aus gutem Grund Teil der EU. Und übrigens geht es mir um die Pferde. Ich reite seit 44 Jahren Trakehner und bin schon damit bis nach Trakehnen ans ehemalige Landgestüt geritten und samt Handpferd durch die Nogat geschwommen. Wenn du also Manns genug bist, können wir gerne eine Geländewettritt machen. Und übrigens habe ich versucht, im Januar 2022 einen Friedensritt nach Moskau zu organisieren. Empfehlen möchte ich christliche Musik. Unter : Rory Gallagher - Live at the Bottom Line Club New York, 11.11.1978, the Late Show, habe ich etwas empfohlen.

@@abigailalma teilweise sind die Lieder auf Plattdeutsch (was ich selber nicht so gut verstehe, obwohl ich in Norddeutschland wohne), von früher ausgewanderten Christen, wahrscheinlich Mennoniten, aber insgesamt ist es soooooooooooo gut, daß es wirklich gut tut, es anzuhören, denke ich.
Z.B. von C.C. Haziel und auch von anderen gibt es auch noch so viel andere, schöne Musik. Die Musik wurde dann wohl in Bolivien, in Paraguay, in Mexiko, in den USA, in Kanada aufgenommen, wohin diese Christen (bzw. ihre Vorfahren) ausgewandert sind, wo ich selber aber auch noch nie war.

Eine unglaubliche Stimme mit diesem Lied, Abigail. Auf der Suche nach Ambiente und Radio Chatter wegen völlig anderem bin ich hier drauf gestoßen. Das hat meinen Tag gerettet. In den Neunzigern haben wir solche Lieder gespielt und geschrieben, aber ich dachte schon, das sei vergessen und verloren gegangen. Bitte weiter machen. Und Deine Stimme harmoniert wunderbar mit der Deutschen Sprache. Da wir viel zu wenige alte Volkslieder hören, bitte überleg' Dir, da noch etwas nachzulegen. Es muß ja nicht gleich Plattdeutsch sein, wenn das zu schwer ist. Aber Deine Stimme trägt diese Lieder auf eine wunderbare Weise.
Laß' Dir nicht einreden, diese Naturstimme zu verbilden. Behalte sie und damit hast Du einen Schatz, der Dir geschenkt wird und den Du ansonsten nicht erwerben kannst.

The era this song comes from is over a decade before the nazi's were even concieved, as the germans were retreating from their newly gained territory in russia. it is not an evil song, although it is certainly not good. I enjoy it, because as a student of history i love to learn about stuff like this that informs you exactly what the men who would later become nazis felt, this song is one of the best examples of the defeated german spirit before it had been siezed, used, and corrupted by the nazis. It's simple tune also makes it easy to discerne the different words, gramatical structures, etc. I understand very well your concern, but I am no neo-nazi, in fact I abhor them. I am merely fascinated by german history and culture, and sad to have seen it broken by the nazis.

@@caranorn That's a fair argument, and precisely the reason why I listen to this song (I clicked on this video because I found it wierd that someone like her would sing a song like this) this song is a romentacised version of horrifying events, and serves as a glimpse into the mindset that those young germans had that would cause them to want to fight for the nazis. It shows a glimpse of the mindset that would cause young men to throw their lives away and risk everything for a war)
This sounds like something a German knight in the 1100s would hear an attractive barmaid singing when stumbling into a tavern after coming home from a battle riddled with PTSD
Danke für die tolle Interpretation des Liedes der Deutschen Ordens, die eng mit den Templern verbandelt waren und auch nach dem 13. Oktober 1307 noch existierten. Ich liebe dieses Lied. Ich bin die ergo gleich mal gefolgt.
Nein, dies ist ein Freikorpslied und hat nichts mit dem Deutsch Orden zu tun. In anderen Worten, der Bezug ist zur Entstehungszeit des Nationalsozialismus und beinhaltet unter anderem nationale Ansprüche auf Territorien im Osten. Ich denke jedoch nicht dass die Sängerin sich diesem Zusammengang bewusst ist.

I've no relation with Germans don't understand the lyrics but I somehow feel this song as a foreigner living in Baltics.
Es ist so schade, daß heute nur noch so wenige Menschen diese schönen alten deutschen Lieder kennen; es scheint, als ob vieles der volkstümlichen Sangeskunst von vor '45 einer kollektiven Zwangslöschung zum Opfer gefallen wäre, - die Tatsache, daß Du Dich bemüßigt gesehen hast, das Thema des Liedes im "Disclaimer" vom WK2 abzugrenzen, zeigt ja, daß da ein gewisser "Nagel im Kopf" in der Hörerschaft vermutett wird.
Es freut mich sehr, wenn so junge Menschen wie Du die alten Melodien wiederaufleben lassen und sie so in neue Zeiten begleiten - vielen Dank dafür.
