    Diverticulitis is an extremely unpleasant digestive disease.
    Those diagnosed know it’s worth taking measures to avoid future episodes. Unfortunately, 1 in 5 will have another flare up within five years. In this video I'm looking at what diet changes may help treatment, as well as some common myths about foods to avoid.
    Diet for Diverticulitis: Recommendations and Myths
    Just to clarify, Diverticulosis refers to having diverticula (the small pockets that form in your large intestine) that have not yet become infected and painful.
    Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticula become inflamed or infected.
    So diverticulosis always occurs before diverticulitis. And together these two conditions are known as diverticular disease.
    STUDY: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23...
    Unfortunately the risk of diverticulosis increases as we grow older, to about 70% of people aged 80 and above. Fortunately, it only progresses to diverticulitis about 4% of the time.
    The first thing I want to look at is probiotics, which are bacteria we eat for health benefits.
    Studies show a variety of different probiotic strains are effective in reducing symptoms of diverticulitis. Particularly those of Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus paracasei.[ and this was seen in tandem with a high fiber diet]
    They've also been successfully combined with the anti-inflammatory drug Mesalamine to help reduce acute symptoms. However, it’s uncertain if they reduce the risk of recurrence.
    The best food sources of probiotics are fermented foods, such as yogurt, quark, Yakult, sauerkraut, kefir, tempeh, and miso.
    Probiotic supplements are also a great option, but recommended dosage has yet to be determined.
    Now I mentioned just before that probiotics benefits were seen with a high fiber diet, and it seems the more fiber, the better.
    One observational study found those who ate 25 grams or more of fiber per day had a 41% lower risk of being hospitalized for diverticulitis compared to those who ate less than 14 grams per day.
    Another study that followed more than 690,000 women without diverticular disease found that each additional 5 grams of fiber per day was associated with a 15% reduction in risk of diverticulitis.
    Considering that fiber has numerous other known benefits for the health, particularly in maintaining a healthy gut bacteria, it makes sense to recommend a high fiber diet.
    Unfortunately today most people only consume half of the recommended amount. Women should aim to get at least 25 grams per day, while the average man should have at least 38 grams per day. Which basically means eat more vegetables and legumes.
    Okay so let's move onto some common rumours surrounding diverticulitis and diet, the first is that you should avoid nuts and seeds, corn and popcorn.

    I'm 35 and I had diverticulitis about 8 times in 7 years. One thing I can say... is that out of the 7 times I have gone to the hospital and seeing 7 different doctors... no 2 of them have said the same thing. They all have different opinions about diets and what does and doesn't cause a flare up... frustrating to say the least....

      I’m 33 and had to have surgery. The hospital discharged me after a week with no information they didn’t even tell me what I had until I read my discharge letter when I got home, literally said here’s antibiotics take them for 7 days, got home and read the letter which turned out to say “Perforated diverticula disease”. I’ve been driving myself crazy reading stuff online which all seems contrasting and different sites contradict what over sites are saying. I literally don’t know what to eat or what not to eat.

    I’ve struggled with diverticular disease for almost 20 years but the last 2 have been really hard. I couldn’t seem to get out of an attack and I was frustrated beyond measure because I just couldn’t get on top of it and I wasn’t eating ANY of the foods that were my known triggers. Antibiotics were the only thing that would turn my attacks around but they knocked my off my feet for at least a week every time I had to take them and like I mentioned the last two years I was on them more than I was off of them it seemed. So I started looking for a more natural way to combat my attacks. I fixed mine with Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar (non pasteurized with the mother) I take the capsules every single day and if I feel an attack coming I drink 1 shot glass of straight ACV for 2 days, sometimes 3 if it doesn’t feel like I’ve got it turned around. This has changed my life! The attacks are still hard and take a toll on me but nothing like the attack combined with the antibiotics did! If you’re having trouble try ACV and see if it will help you too! =}

    I went to a GI doctor with my diverticulitis. I got a CT scan, which showed the inflammation in an unexpected place - on the upper left of my abdomen. Apparently, it usually occurs in the lower left. And that changed the dr’s treatment plan. He was planning on removing my descending colon. I was sent home to eat a high fiber diet and exercise instead. PS: a CZcams search on diverticulitis led me to check out kefir. A homemade batch of kefir has more probiotics than anything else I could find. I ordered the starter for kefir on Amazon (called kefir pearls) and got started right away. It was ready in 24 hours, and now I have an abundance of kefir and kefir pearls. I’m feeling hopeful.

      Hi Esther,
      It sounds like your care plan has taken a bit of a turn recently.
      As for kefir, yes it is a good source of probiotics however I would definitely encourage bringing in other rich sources of fibre in the form of fruits, vegetables and wholegrains too as they all provide a much more diverse range of probiotics as well as prebiotics (the food that feeds your probiotics).
      This encourages a healthier gut microbiome which has been associated with improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms. If the kefir is working, great, but just remember to build in some more variety for micronutrient diversity

    I have had several surgeries to remove abcesses and parts of my colon as a result of diverticulitis and each time it started with high fibre flare up, eg eating breakfast bran or raisin bran muffins etc. Hospital dietitions told me to eat a low fiber diet, for at least 3 months after surgery, but once I introduced high fibres again, such as broccoli or sauerkraut I put them through a blender first. Nuts and seeds dont cause diverticulitis but they can certainly aggravate it. I drink prune juice and aloe vera juice to keep my bowels working or take deglyccerised licorice capsules and find " smooth foods" way better than a high fiber diet. Gluten glues me up so staying off grains leads to fewer flare ups. I am in my seventies and have had to learn all this the hard way. My surgeon kept saying high fibre and my dietitian low fiber and I found a middle road and bought a high quality blender instead. I blend most of my food into a porridge, even Sunday roast. It tastes equally delicious. I avoid all foods with skins too, especially grapes and raisins.

    Very interesting and what he said was alot of what I suspected. There are two types of fiber,soluble and insoluble. I believe this is the main reason some can`t tolerate ex: corn. If your experiencing diarrhea you avoid corn and certain other insoluble fiber. When constipated you would eat more of them. I had an attack of diverticultis this week ,am taking antibiotics now and I agree I was not eating enough fiber leading up to it. Once you have it,yes you have to avoid temporarily and mostly liquids to give thee intestines a rest. You do however have to start again within a few days gradually. I have noticed in the past if I get enough fiber I can eat corn,popcorn and anything really.... My lazy eating is usually what gets me into trouble,strictly speaking for myself. Thank-you Joe,time to get back on track.

Last time I had a bowl of oatmeal I developed such a GI bleed that I was put in a helicopter and flown to a larger hospital to get blood and an angiogram. Why was I eating fiber? Because the doctors told me to eat plenty of fiber so I wouldn't be constipated. I've learned that I know my body better. I cannot eat a high fiber diet and live.

And in addition to that, do not eat solid food for a few days. Until I think it’s safe to introduce solid foods Again I drink electrolytes and clear organic coconut juice. For me it’s been my diet now for 2 weeks. I’m still scared to eat. This works for me with each attack. The salts draw water from the body right through the intestinal wall. I guess it clears those pockets of infection and moves what’s clumped up making the sickness. It all goes out as waste finally giving the raw intestines relief. I haven’t been hospitalized yet. I have had 3 attacks in 3 years.

      I'm going to give this a try as well. Just came back from the ER a couple of days ago w/ cipro & flagyl & these antibiotics seem to be making me worse! Soooooo bloated, my abdomen is distended a good 2xs normal size. Plus burning & pain so bad. I called the ER asking about the dangers of the antibiotics, but he just said the usual "you need to come in again" 🙄. I'll update if anything changes

    • @Marg205
      @Marg205 Pƙed 4 lety

      Jilligain I hope it works. For myself and my son in law, within 30 minutes to an hour after drinking it the intestines begin to get rid of all that infection. You should feel a lot better soon afterwards. Within 24 hours my 102 temp went down to normal. However If I were you and didn't feel better afterward I would go back to ER because that infection can make a person septic if all that stagnant waste doesn't clear out.

Then winter came and I asked my gp's nurse if I should continue taking vitamin d being it's dreary and little sun and she said sure take 2k per day. I had some leftover 1 k d and took them for a month or more then i took citracal 2 , twice a day to use those up and then I purchased the 2k mcg and took them for quite some time.Then a few months later I had experience arrythmia and horrible palpitations. My blood work then showed a little on the high normal calcium. I wonder if that was caused by over supplementation ,as those symptoms left after I stopped the 2k mcg does of vit D. I was re tested again a month later and my calcium levels were fine I hope they stay that way

      @Joe_Leech  Pƙed 3 lety

      Hi Theresa,
      Flare ups can happen for a few reasons, some of the mechanisms though are still yet top be determined or associated with particular things.
      Meal size can contribute to it but it would depend on the type of foods you would be incorporating. One of the best management strategies moving forward would be having consistency in meals sizes (both volume and calories) and snacks in between to make sure you are effectively distributing your protein and energy requirements across the day and preventing the need to have one large meal to get everything in. This keeps the load consistent and places less stress on the GI tract.

    • @Joe_Leech
      @Joe_Leech  Pƙed 2 lety +2

      Yep that must have been frustrating! It's important to remember that triggers are individual to the person, and also that doctors are not Dietitians :wink:
      During a flare up it is definitely best to reduce fiber and remove the more potentially problematic types: pips, seeds, nuts, popcorn, skins, pith. Once you are in remission you can start to put those back in in small amounts to see whether they cause issues as part of a higher fiber diet.

      I know your posted question is 2 yrs ago but others may come here with this same question. Here's what I do after or during a diverticulitis flare up or GI bleed.
      At first sight of bleeding and or pain with no bleeding, I stop everything by mouth. Right then. Everything. I may wet my mouth with a sip of water every so often. A sip not a glass at the time.
      I do not consume anything by mouth until the pain and or bleeding is gone. I do this for 2 reasons. #1 it gives my colon and stomach the rest and healing time it must need. and #2 in case I have to have emergency surgery or a procedure and the need to have me with an empty stomach to do an Emergency surgery.
      After pain or bleeding or discomfort in abdomin subsides and it could take a day or 2, really, I then begin clear liquids. Teas, water, Jello but not red, Apple juice, brotha. I have that a day or 2.
      Next I graduate to full liquid diet. Ice cream, greek yogurt, more broth .
      Next day I go to a soft diet of mashed potatoes, gravy, white rice, grits, cream of soups, applesauce, puddings oh and more ice cream😁
      Next come the diet I stay on for a long time.
      LOW FIBER- meats cooked soft. Scrambled or fried or boiled eggs. Occasional mashed potatoes, you hurt, rice, egg noodles, green beans cooked well. Sweet peas, bananas, canned peaches, cooked apples. Just not things yet like broccolli or cabbage or greens or dry beans, cauliflower. Gas producing things are a no, no yet.
      Eventually I go back to a normal diet. The only things I never add back to my diet are oats, wheats and bran. The grains literally almost kill me.
      When we'll I eat all meats, all fresh or canned fruits, most low gas producing veggies, prices, egg noodles, rice noodles, dairy like milk, cheeses, yogurts, ice creams, butter, white bread, most any kind of sandwich I like. No whole grain bread though. I eat strawberries, figs, blueberries. Most any fruit. A few nuts occasionally. Yeah that myth changed or was updated on nuts and berries. I'm glad. Cooked cabbage seems ok to me but not raw cabbage. Onions, garlic and even tomatoes don't bother me.
      I'll just never again eat whole grains, bran, oats including oatmeal and no cream of wheat.

I've learned my lesson with those. My body has a bad reaction to those and I lose a lot of blood when I ingest those. I do eat vegetables but not corn. I also include chicken, turkey and fish in my diet. Beans don't seem to bother me. I eat those in moderation but only because of gas. Sometimes I take a tums before I eat dry cooked beans and can eat a few servings though. I eat broccoli and cauliflower and brussel sprouts and asparagus too. I eat raw greens like arugula and spinach ect. I make a salad with all the raw greens. I have figured this out and ate this way for the last 7 months and no GI bleeds or inflammation. I feel very well. I do take a stool softener most days whether I need it or not. Stool too long in the bowel is bacteria too long in the bowel. When I have had a flare up in the past, I always go on clears for a few days and broths, then to a full liquid for a day or 2, then soft foods and then to my diet listed above. I have been symptom free for about 8-9 months. My body doesn't like gluten very well either. Also vanilla Greek yogurt makes my system feel better too. I've grown to really love that stuff.

I’d suggest you keep this info day by day, one side of the page being what you eat, the opposite side, any reaction to what you have eaten that particular day. Maybe any reaction that occurs the next day. I think that way you can look back and maybe discover exactly what food(s) cause adverse reactions / pain. I’m no expert but I discovered I had a bad reaction to the yeast in bread. White or brown, it’s not the bread, it’s the yeast!

      Hi Myrna,
      It is important to meet your daily fibre targets of around 25g per day (a mix between both soluble and insoluble fibre), however avoid consuming foods which contain small seeds such as chia seeds. The fluid target you should be aiming for is 80fl.oz or 2.5L per day, evenly distributed across meals and snacks. Fibrous foods include things such as fruit, vegetables and wholegrain, so aiming to include these at all main meals and snacks helps meet your targets.

I can assure you that when I eat seeds, popcorn, nuts.......IT DOES AND WILL CAUSE A FLARE UP. That being said, I avoid those foods now and have started taking an acidophilous capsule each day along with a digestive enzyme with each meal and have not had an issue since. Also, eating smaller portions will help. And I am still considering surgery. However I may try a plant based diet before making my final decision.

      I've struggled with IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) a catch all for various problems. Later diagnosed with diverticulitis. Working irregular hours for an airline, bad sleep, meals and everything else, off schedule. No such thing as regularity! My Dr at the time tried medication, it didnt help at all, so he recommended Metamucil, or Fiberfax, not sure you can get the latter now, but Metamucil is at pharmacies and grocery stores. SUCCESS! Everything improved, I was only in my 20's/30's at the time. ~Then I got older~ saw a gastroenterologist, even though it was many years later, he also recommended Metamucil, and also a stool softener gelcap for those 'straining' times! No one should strain, especially with diverticulitis! This is an inherited disorder for me, and as I'm susceptible to bowel cancer, this nasty disease took my Mother at age 39, and her mother in her 50's, it's also a connected inherited disease. So, apart from regular colonoscopies due to family history, I only take those two, non prescription items, which seemed to have saved my life! If Metamucil isn't sold where you live, Google search it, you'll see pictures and what it is, can probably order it online - or take the info to pharmacist to find similar. Good luck everyone.

I have said this many times that most healthy omnivores of west I saw who were not buying food outside everyday and got their food from homes were eating a lot of salad with meat which is norm in west for very long time. Though I do not see Raw salad trend continue but yes for some of those who eat meat for them it could be good.

      Hi there, if you're worried about your hydration status I would recommend drinking some form of electrolyte solution as well to assist in retaining water within your body (coupled with aiming for 2-5L/80fl.oz of fluid per day). Signs to look out for would be light headedness (especially from going from sit to stand), small and concentrated urine output and difficulty with concentration/energy levels. That said, if you feel like you need urgent medical attention then a hospital would be recommended.
      As for the nutritional recommendations in this video you would be ok to implement them when you're ready to make the start

Antibiotics are starting to become ineffective. So, now we're talking bowel resection. This is a laparoscopic operation where they remove the diseased section of colon and then reattach the good colon to the rectum. I'm trying to gather as much info about it as I can. I have heard back and forth about how nuts/seeds do/don't promote diverticulitis flare ups. Imo I would rather not test it for myself so I don't eat seeds or nuts. I have not found what triggers this in my own body. But a high fiber diet and probiotics do sound like the way to go. This is something I have not been consistent with. Also drinking enough water.
