The story of the Empress Dowager Cixi, The Concubine Who Launched Modern China, is utterly gripping. At the age of 16 she was chosen as one of the emperor's concubines. She rose to become the absolute ruler of China and reformed the medieval empire. But for all her achievements, was there a price to pay in terms of violent suppression and cruelty? Jung Chang discusses this controversial and compelling figure with Jon Snow, no stranger to national upheavals. Jung Chang is the author of Wild Swans and Mao: The Unknown Story. Jon Snow is one of our most distinguished broadcasters.
