Excellent presentation. The Chinese Drama: " Nothing Gold Can Stay" is staged in this period of the last half of the 19th century, and deals with the grass roots implications of the policies of Empress Cixi, and is a very interesting movie in terms of character development.

I have a question, how could Cixi put her sister's son on the Throne? Did her sister also marry into the Aisin Gioro family? Doesn't the emperor have to be of the Aisin Gioro?

Yes. Her sister also married an Aisin Gioro. One of her husband, the emperor's brother. All the clans/families marry each other just like many European royalties are related through marriage. In fact, there is a very interesting myth that said a woman of the Yehan Nara clan (Cixi's clan) will destroy the Aisin Gioro. It's another story in itself. If u know Chinese u will hear the tale of this myth by Chinese story tellers.... It's very interesting for it forcast the downfall of the Qing empire by a woman from the Yahanara clan. However, this woman wasn't Cixi herself but her niece, the empress dowager Lan. After Cixi died she made her niece the dowager empress to Puyi the last emperor. It was this empress that signed the abdication which ended the Qing dynasty.
