The modernist home and studio of the painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Charleston was a gathering point for some of the 20th century’s most radical artists, writers and thinkers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group. It is where they came together to imagine society differently, and has always been a place where art and experimental thinking are at the centre of everyday life.
Today, we present a dynamic year-round programme of exhibitions, events and festivals. We believe in the power of art, in all its forms, to provoke new ways of thinking and living.

Thank you for those few minutes of peace
Speke was a cad and a bounder to use the terms of their era and i dont think his death was a accident, he took his last uncharted route that day,Death.
I’d never honestly realised the connection with clothes, thank you. I look forward to further insights from you into Charleston/ Bloomsbury 👍
feint audio
The present style is way too upbeat and fast like a BBC travel show. Totally inappropriate for the subject.
Brian was a national treasure! I'm just reading The Outsider books.
Terrible, TERRIBLE pointing behind Julian. Very parvenu.
Sadly missed.
❤
Katy, I suggest less hand/arm waving.
I suggest an altogether less breathy presentation
Brilliant book! This exhibition looks great too 😍
Excellent
An increíble inspiración to us all that love reading and learning about past autors and poets. Thank you Edna for amazing interview.
'promosm' 😝
This video is about the dress. Although I can't imagine why. It's ugly, and see-through at 45 second mark. Couldn't afford an editor?
“Bit of nipp”
yes do another vid entirely devoted to the pictures without even showing your lovely self
I don’t recall anyone ever denying that they adored Downton Abbey. Such as rude suggestion. Downton was massively popular because people the world over were fixated by it.
Thank you 💜
Great content! Love KH!
Fab!
The camera was on you 90% of the time just talking. The other 10% it’s just B roll footages of you going through the house like in music videos.
Yes you are right It appeared she was auditioning for a part in a movie...which I would not want to see.
With all due respect, K Hessel is so vibrant and delighted, that she quite distracts from the art. But the work is well worth seeing on a second viewing.
I agree. She needs to calm down. Way too much BBC style gesticulation and over enunciation distracts from the content.
literally my favorite video on the internet right now
Very interesting
Self-indulgent ramble. Quite dull. A pity Sewell owed his success to his camp entertainment value rather than any brilliance as an art historian or connoisseur.
For someone who hates him so much, you seem to spend a lot of your free time watching and commenting on videos that feature him. Every Brian video I've watched on CZcams has your comments underneath - sometimes multiple times. Obsessed! He's dead and loved by many, get over it. Did he critique your art once and burst your postmodern bubble? If so, you clearly never recovered.
The first hipsters
After longing to go there for a very, very long time. My husband took me as surprise 50th birthday present. It was wonderful.
The camera appears to be on you as versus this extraordinary house, somewhat a pity.
How true. Sad when we could have been looking at all the wonderful art instead of "her".
this was just lovely
Que pésima la calidad de imágen del video.
Love your enthusiasm. Sadly I didn't visit Charleston to see Nina's work. Have fond memories of her. A fantastic woman, Very spirited and courageous Lady.
Knew Nina well. I lived in Paddington and Nina was alway's at our house. Lucian Freud next door. Hal Wolfe upstairs. The lamplighter Stephen Fothergill too. Very Bohemian and lot's of action.
More Sewell please. Much more.
Good work.Thanks.
just discovered Mr Sewell, he's a genius!
Your dress looks as wonderful on you as it does on the Duchess of Cambridge. I had only seen it in still photos and a photo of a portrait. I prefer it in the colour shown here. Movement brings the dress to life and makes it art. I love it more now, and I learned something about fashion, thank you.
I thought as others that this was to be on the art of Venessa Bell?!!!!!!
@@vincentmancini6279 Agreed. They didn’t spend enough time on the rooms and artwork. And she should step aside and narrate off camera instead of being in the middle of the screen.
PЯӨMӨƧM 💘
I have every book she ever wrote. Ma she resst in peace! Such a nice conversation. x
Wonderful talk - ghastly photo sequence.

Matty is art 😚
Charleston house is amazing - the collection is amazing the runway set did it no justice
Stunning. The colour palette sings Duncan Grant. Some designs must be already be sold out. Thinking the garments with the images from I think the fans. A gorgeous video to watch and listen to.
katy is the quintessential english rose. that's what I [italics] learned.
Interesting to me how Sewell always considered himself an outsider, I'd have thought his aristocracy would've not given the man any real sense of this.
he's not from the aristocracy
Still great
...'hood'...sorry....good....male fingers no good for typing on a phone... and 'tend' should trend. Male artist problem
I think it is a great shame that there is this ongoing trend to promote reversed sexism in art and music. We have music made by men for which it is never hailed as being made by a male composer yet if it is made by a woman it is hailed as a female composer. It is irritating to have this rot rammed down our throats. A composition is hood or it is not and the same goes for art. Let the work stand upon its own two feet and not upon trend. Those who uphold this way to be today will be mocked in the yet to come. Merrit based is timeless...tend is fad.
It is not reverse sexism it is giving women a platform they have not yet had before. If it’s annoying for you to have it ‘rammed down your throat’ think about what it is to be a women in a misogynistic practice
In Paris women artist's are finally coming into their own. Unfortunately they are still spread out in many galleries and hard to find. It's about time the French had Women Only Exhibition's.
Trend may be a Fad, but some brilliant artist's have set many amazing Trend's. Men and Women.
