The way: her red bracelet on leg is the leg injury. The two people after the desert scene are doctors coming to save her using umbrella i.e. the helicopter. The women crying with her man. People taking video are those 3 people in blue. The way she floats in the air but those doctors put her soul back in her body by literally dragging it down. The rich guy with the mask is the guy with golden black outfit in the heaven.

"I have heard enough of these voices, almost like I have no choice" (911 lyrics)
She might have caused the accident, this is implied by her saying immediately after they bring her back "Did anybody die?... I'm sorry"
I think the video is basically what the song is about, reality is too painful, too hard to cope with so she enters this dream-like state where she's alive but she's not taking in information the same way, hence the music video being a recollection of reality in a different way.
The video ends with "I don't wanna die" meaning that no matter how painful and traumatic reality is, deep inside she doesn't wanna give up, she doesn't wanna cave to the voices.

A theory I'm seeing floating around is that she may have actually *caused* the accident - her first response is "Did anyone die???" and if she purposefully drove her bike into traffic to hurt herself, *especially* if she hadn't taken her meds that morning, like she told the EMT, she may not have even realized that other people could get hurt.

Yea I think she caused the accident. She said she didn’t have her pills, which meant she had the negative, depressed thoughts and the thoughts are telling her to cycle through traffic. That’s why she woke up and asked if anyone is dead because she caused the accident.

    • @slappedonhook
      @slappedonhook Před 4 lety +23

And I get it, her little monsters on SSRIs are super grateful...but at the same time, have any of you compared the number of Americans on antipsychotics, compared to EVERY other western nation? And I am not shaming people that genuinely need that help. So not. But merging BIG PHARMA and BIG POP, seems like a really dangerous situation, for Americans specifically. And, like, look up how many American infants are on antipsychotics. It will blow your fucking mind. And if it doesn't, you're on way too many drugs. I'm sorry bro.

The song is definitely about mental health. The video is more open for interpretation. Her “911” is her antipsychotic medication. What I’ve been hearing is that she was involved in an accident, blacked out/died and her mind was introducing a hallucination to cope with the pain/trauma of her reality. In a way, it’s her “Chromatica.” Loved your interpretation and your thoughts! I gotta keep watching your videos, man.

This song is about antidepressants, mental health. If she doesn't take medications she crushes, maybe that's the reason of the accident or the accident is the metaphor for what happens in her mind when she doesn't take antidepressants. The scenes from the dream is inspired by Armenian movie The Color Of Pomegranates and there's a poster of this movie. This is the video of the century!

  • @yesthatbrendon
    @yesthatbrendon Před 4 lety +3

As everyone mentioned, this is about mental health and "pop a 911" is about the anti-psychotic/ant-anxiety pills she used to take. The music video was also inspired by an Armenian book of poetry that was turned into a movie called "The Colour of Pomegranates". You see the movie poster towards the end of the music video and that's why you see the cinema complex sign showing an Armenian film festival.

  • @crouge
    @crouge Před 4 lety +26

The music video is heavily influenced by Armenian cinematography, particularly by Sergei Parajanov’s 1969 “The Color of Pomegranates” film about Sayat Nova - a prominent Armenian poet and ‘ashugh’ (wandering singer/songwriter similar to troubadour).

If I’m not mistaken, I believe that this is a representation of her dissociative episode that she had a couple of years ago. She describes what happened in more detail in her interview with Oprah earlier this year. I think the video represents the effects of trauma, in this case she used a car accident, but it could be from any trauma. And it shows an artistic interpretation of what happens when trauma manifests into dissociation. There are so many details that correlate back and forth even down to the fire hydrant. It’s really incredible and that last scene is so raw and really hits me hard every time I see it. 💕 as someone who has battled with trauma and PTSD it’s amazing to see an artist turn these very tough topics into something beautiful! 🙏

Everything leading up until she was revived was her going through a psychotic episode as a result of the trauma of the accident (which might have been caused by her not taking her antipsychotic pills, which is what the song is about) and everything we saw was the result of her hallucinations (that come with a psychotic episode) mixing in with the reality of her surroundings.

Chromatica is the place Gaga goes to due to trauma. In her Rain on Me performance at the VMA’s you can see Chromatica visually, which is DNA, the brain piano, the purple castle-like structure which essentially is her brain. In 911, she went to the Armenian Festival, she had an “episode” since she didn’t have her pills (the song 911 is about PTSD). She had an accident which causes the near death experience. The video begins with the horse which illustrates the last billboard she saw “White Sands” and it’s also death greeting her. I can keep going lol

Most of the characters in the dream are psychopomps AKA gods or agents of death that guide souls to the afterlife. To make things easier, I'm referring to the vision version as Gaga and the real version as Stefani.
First shot of Gaga in the desert with the red mask over her eyes (AKA a concussion), she meets Death who guides her through the desert. She's also surrounded by pomegranates - in order to marry Persephone and allow her passage in his realm, Hades fed her a pomegranate that he grew in his garden.
Death then leads her to the village with other people there. Here we see not only the man slamming his head into a pillow, the driver in the car who crashed and whose head slamming into the steering wheel when the airbag deployed. We also see a woman comforting and hugging a body wrapped in cloth who has already died - this woman is mimicking the Pieta, the scene where Mary embraces the dead body of Jesus.
The two people in yellow and orange outfits standing beside a door which Gaga is standing behind are firefighters who pulled Stefani out of the car wreck by removing the door she was trapped behind. The poses Gaga does happens to be the firefighters checking her vital signs in order to determine if she's still alive.
The passersby that watch the accident in Stefani's world and are dressed in blue in Gaga's world are pulling double duty as both the Fates and the Norns. These are the goddesses who watch the world and decide the destinies of the world, including who lives and who dies. The woman stirring the cauldron before them is a Chinese psychopomp who brews a potion that makes the dead forget their past lives before they reincarnate, a role also served in Greek myth by the waters of the River Styx.
When the man with the umbrella comes down with the woman in white wearing the red cross, he's spinning the umbrella as he's a pilot flying an air ambulance. As Gaga is dancing in front of them, itself representing herself being judged by the scales of Anubis, we see the two paramedics checking the others - the woman in white is stabilising the driver while the umbrella-wielding man is confirming the other man has died.
Gaga's dancing before the small pool and in front of a large set of golden cloths is actually a reference to the myth of Orpheus, a poet and singer in Greek myth who tried and failed to rescue his lover and muse from the underworld. The failure was just at the entrance to the underworld hence it's golden visage. Here we see the umbrella man with Anubis, giving him oxygen after the accident. The woman in white also reflects light with a mirror towards the viewer - she's checking the eyes' ability to contract when light is exposed to them and this is a recurring action in the video.
Next we see Gaga floating upward before the umbrella man pulls her back down. Stefani's actually flatlining and floating up to heaven here - notice the halo she's wearing - and the paramedic is giving her resus. In fact, we briefly see the illusion breaking here as for about two frames or so it shows Stefani in the real world. After this, the two paramedics come over and focus their attention on saving Stefani. Gaga's dance poses at the moment the two come near are actually their checking her vital signs and the umbrella man actually tries to give her mouth-to-mouth to help get her breathing back on track.
The slow-motion shot of all the characters walking after the man in black riding on his horse is based on medieval artwork depicting the death of kings, as in these artworks the funeral processions are led by Death himself. After this, Gaga's erratic hand shaking and the flashing of the artwork depicting the accident is her having a seizure, with Umbrella Man checking Stefani's BPM.
We also see a costume in chunks which Gaga then wears in her next shot - this is based on the myth of Osiris, the king of the Egyptian gods who was murdered and cut into pieces by his brother Set. Osiris' wife Isis tried to resurrect him by putting his body back together but she couldn't find the last part, so he became the god of the underworld instead. This is Stefani finally being stabilised enough that she's going to survive. Here, we see the firefighers bring over a gurney which she's placed onto and the umbrella man bringing over a defribilator to give her heart a shock, which happens in the next shot where every other character is present - the facade of the dying world is fading as Stefani is brought back to the waking world.

    1) Black Horseman in a White Desert - This signifies the poster for New Mexico Gaga saw before the accident. He may also signify Death or her body luring her deeper in her mind.
    2) The Red Mask - This is the blood from the accident.
    3) Bike with Pomegranates - The first real element in Gaga's vision. She is most probably the victim of the collision. Pomegranates simultaneously signify life and death. Take note that the pomegranates are actually apples in real life.
    4) The Red Anklet - Gaga's broken foot in real life.
    5) Walking to the White Chapel - This is the movie poster Gaga saw. This can also signify the deepest recesses of her mind, protecting her from trauma.
    6) Pillow Man - Another victim of the accident who crashed on his steering wheel. Probably swerved to avoid Gaga.
    7) Black Girl in Blue - The first spectator to the accident. Most likely the one who called 911.
    8) Two Yellow Men Holding a Door - These are two firemen holding the car door to get Gaga out of the mangled vehicle. Their hats have '911' written on them in roman numerals. The yellowmen were blindfolded because the firemen wore black goggles.
    9) Woman Holding a White Body - A woman holding a victim who might have been hit by one of the cars. The white body even has red lace signifying blood.
    10) Additional Three People in Blue - Additional spectators filming the whole thing.
    11) Yellow Man Mixing a Cauldron - This is a fireman and a smoking car wreckage.
    12) The Latin in Guy in Black and the Black Mary in White - These are the paramedics trying to save Gaga's life.
    13) The Spinning Umbrella - The paramedics descending via a helicopter.
    14) The Purse with the Picture of the Doll - This signifies the pills that would have made her stable. Did she cause the accident? Her balancing the purse/case and the doll could mean her balancing life (doll) and death (case - coffin).
    15) The Latin Guy Strangling the White Mummy - The paramedic was checking for a pulse.
    16) The Black Mary Covering the Pillow Man with a Sheet - This was the paramedic covering the victim with a thermal blanket.
    17) A Man with Dog Ears whose Face is Being Covered by the Latin Man - The paramedic giving oxygen to one of the victims. This might be the driver of the second car.
    18) The Black Mary Flashing a Mirror on Gaga - The paramedic was flashing her flashlight on Gaga's pupil's looking for consciousness. Gaga in the dreamscape is her consciousness.
    19) Gaga Floating Away with a Rose - This signifies Gaga's consciousness/life leaving her body. She was even wearing a halo. The rose wilts as she is being pulled down, probably signifying her ascension being cut short.
    20) The Latin Guy Pulling Her with a Rope - The paramedic gave her CPR. You can even see a brief flash of the real world as she comes crashing down.
    21) The Rope - It was the tourniquet used on Gaga's foot.
    22) Latin and Gaga Mouth-to-Mouth Action - This was CPR, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
    23) Yellow Man on Ladder Sprinkling Rose Petals - This is a fireman repairing the movie sign. The petals were sparks.
    24) Men in Blue Masks - These are policemen. They even have the bird sign in their hats.
    25) The Blue Streamers Waving in the Wind - This was the fire hydrant spewing water.
    26) The Peacock - This represented Armenia in the Armenian Film Festival signage.
    27) The Black Mary Holding a Snake - This is the snake in the cross logo of the paramedics.
    28) Gaga in Yellow Spasming - This is Gaga's body rejecting the medication/treatment.
    29) The Mural - This was the scene of what really happened. Gaga is now getting closer to surfacing to reality.
    30) The Latin Guy Touching Her Heart Area - The paramedic giving her heart pumps and CPR.
    31) Gaga in Black Floral Outfit - This is Gaga being put in a full-body brace. The curtain also might have fallen in the background to signify her impending death, the bodybag. This is why, as a last-ditch effort, the paramedics used the defibrillator. There is also police tape in the background with the word 'caution' written in Armenian.
    32) The Box - This is the defibrillator.
    33) The Virgin Sacrifice - As dream world and real world collide, the vision concludes in a terrifying sacrificial scene as the pain comes rushing in. It's interesting that the knife that kills her in the dream world is the current of electricity that brings her to life in the real world.
    34) 'I didn't have pain pills!' - This suggests that she caused the accident because she had a severe episode of pain (fibromyalgia) from not taking her medication.
    35) LG Advertisement - 'Life is good, LG.' Ironic, isn't it?

I simply take it as "Pop a 911" as popping pain pills/anxiety pills/medication or drug of choice whenever "I" hurt because it masks the pain and makes life easier to deal with. Which then, becomes the enemy which is "yourself." In my case, I am quick to try any medication to make my chronic pain go away. I can really relate to this song. The message couldn't be any clearer. However, I do not hallucinate.

The song and video have multiple layers. 911's lyrics are very telling, and one of the things that is easily missed is the reference to Valley of the Dolls. "Keep my dolls inside diamond boxes", dolls beings pills. The video references the movie the Color of Pomegranates, has a nod to Fellini as well, and it's filled with symbolism for death and resurrection, being heavily connected to tarot as well.

My biggest enemy is me pop a 911 referring to antidepressants and pain killers she’s gotta take (but also just generally acknowledging mental health issues in general as well as past traumas being “the number one killer” which she says in her “marry the night” video). So all the sight intakes during the accident go into her subconscious as she’s nearing death but gets pulled back to life in the video but also referencing how she can have “accidents” when she doesn’t take her meds. And the accident references her past traumas as well. Also at the beginning she’s following the guy in the black horse with a blind fold which represents her following her dark thoughts of self-harm blindly, consequently cause of harm to herself and others. And the LG placement isn’t simply product placement but it’s an ad of herself as the star Lady Gaga and “Life’s Good” logo making it seems like her life is so wonderful when she’s constantly fighting an up/down battle with herself where she nears death and then makes a comeback with her fame. You’ll also notice when she’s in her red outfit, the guy opens his mouth and turns to face her to represent the guy in real life trying to resuscitate her and her walking away b/c she wanted to die cus she was in so much physical pain from her fibromyalgia, an event that really happened.

If you went over some of your contemporaries reaction videos and comments as I have (and by the way your reaction was visceral in that you had some very personal reflections), you will find out how close you were to deciphering her message! Also from her interviews she talked about mental health. The key is the first line in the melody: my biggest enemy is me, pop a 911- code for her meds! Then the takeaway in the end is that if you do take your life, you effect many others around you😢
