  • After living in Czech and Poland for +4 years, I thought I would demystify what it is like living in "Eastern Europe" and give you guys what I think are the benefits of living in this part of the world.
I'm quite generalising this part of the world, technically speaking, one can argue that Eastern Europe should be split as Central/North/South/Balkan/East East Europe. However, this video its just for fun, so just enjoy the ride will ya?

The gap is closing and in many ways, we are ahead of Western or other CENTRAL European countries (Germany, Austria) when it comes to unemployment, growth, public debt etc.

We have good schools, great healthcare etc. Yes, the income is lower, but we also have more cheap services and costs of accommodation so basically, it is not so different from the west. Yes, in a geographical context (which determines the definition), Czech Republic is not an eastern country. But 99.99% of the time, the context of a discussion is not a geographical one, its not a cultural one, not an ethnic one... its POLITICAL. Get it? Economical / political - including this video. So yeah, commenting on this video isn’t hard: CZ is an EASTERN / post-communist country - (there, Hitchslapped) 👐

    • @petrskupa6292
      @petrskupa6292 Před 5 lety

@@tomast1323 There is simpler way to say post-communist country. You say post-communist country.
When we or You speak of Eastern Europe - surely we speak primarily about the culture and context - where geography is merely part of the equation.
(although You surely jest giving it relevance to mere 0.01% ... so indeed Ireland might be part of Southern Europe because of joining the club of PIIGS or maybe Angola might be Eastern Europe for being part of the world overcoming communism..)
So we do speak in a view of deeper cultural context - and that is the point. The Poland, Hungary, Slevenia, Slovakia, Czechia - they are fundamentally more similar in culture, history and context to each other ... and actually to the western European countries. than let say Belarus, Russia, Moldavia .. even Bulgaria or Ukraine.
The division line is cultural and it appeared first about one thousand years ago - with the later countries coalesce with each other and share each others cultural features and norms - based on shared religion and culture.
While the Central Europe was culturally continuous with German, Italian and that of the west...
That thousand years long division is palpable til this day and is much stronger than the one caused by mere 40 years of communism which ended thirty years ago.
That does not mean, that the division between the countries on both ides of the iron wall did heal without trace. There are still peculiarities left on the east of that damned division line ... but compared to the deep schism between Central and Eastern Europe they are already not that prominent.

I was in Poland twice and I didn't see any deffirences, it looks almost same as Czech Republic and many things are better, they building modern train tracks etc...and we are still using 40 years old trains. Only few things I've noticed are worse than in Czech Republic - they throwing bags with garbage on street, under trees and see plastic bag with trash in the street is common in Poland. Second is they have damaged tram tracks, my father was tram driver in Prague and he said that rails in Wroclaw would be considered out of service in Prague. And third thing is they cars are smoking and smelly which is very strange, I don't know what they using instead of fuel. I noticed same thing in Riga in Latvia. Cars in Czech Republic don't smoking. But in other views Poland looks modern than Czech Republic very often and their historical centers look much better than in CZ because we have that tourist traps and stupid russian souvenirs everywhere. I don't like that for example in Prague, you have shop called CZECH SOUVENIRS and everything is written with cyrilic and it has nothing to do with our culture, it's terrible and I am not against Russians, I just want that souvenirs in Russia and not in Prague. :-D And if you need toilet in Czech Republic you have no chance, in Poland they have toilets in centers everywhere and not locked as in Czech Republic which is good I think.

So, i am from Ukraine but live for 6 years in EU (changing counties quite often so there is no point to say which one i am living in).
If people ask me where i would prefer to live, non-EU eastern europe or EU eastern europe i would definetely say its EU.
BUT there are some things i miss from that undeveloped countries and it is "nature".
Whole Europe looks pretty and at the same time this beauty looks "intended". It's like every tree in the city is intentionally put at their places and every tree is cut so it looks good while in Ukraine there are more trees that just grow there by themselves and nobody cuts their leaves so you have a little feeling of wildness.
I also feel that a lot of things are over-regulated for safety reasons in Europe. I don't say it's a bad thing but there is difference between "good for society" and "good for me".
    Example:
Camping in a wild. As i understand i cannot just go to forest and make a camp with a fire legally in random place in Europe (correct me if i wrong). As i understand, not all rivers are accessible for swimming.
It is good for safety but it lock you in a concrete world. Even when special place is provided for camping, this place is prepared for you and you again feel like it's not wildness. Sometimes it's just nice to go away from society, gather sticks, make a fire, enjoy it for a few hours and return.
Overall in those post soviet countries you feel more free in daily situations but when it comes to something serious you just want to run away from that countries.
This 2 things i miss but hopufully they are not very important things.

@@maximgunnarson3291 It's not very clever to say someone's clever only because they agree with your opinion :D Also, how could it be racist to say all Slavs are Eastern Europeans when all slavs are part of the same race. Maybe you meant "misleading" or "discriminating" or "ignorant". If we are to throw heavy accusations, let's at least know what they mean. Greek, Bulgarian and most of the Balkans history include 400-500 years of Ottoman(Turkish) rule. That makes us all biologically Turkish? Now that's not a very clever statement. Also, when we speak about Soviet occupation - Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt agreed on splitting Europe into spheres of influence post WW2. Let's not use the term occupation as what happened to Eastern Europe was well it was done well with the agreement of the Western Powers. As for Czech being Central Europe/Western Europe also due to quality of life - Hungary also claims to be part of Central Europe - however, corruption wise, media freedom wise, standard of living wise - they are either doing worse or similar to the likes of Romania and Croatia. And then again - if we gonna split Europe in more categories than simply East and West - then we need to place countries like Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Slovenia etc in Southern Europe on par with Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Once again, Czechs simply suffer from a superiority complex hence that's why they complain so much of being called Eastern Europe. Funny enough, if you read German media - they often refer to these countries as Eastern Europe.

Most of the stats even say so. Even the history, its like 1000 years of the western sphere vs 40 years of eastern.. But i beleive there is also the third region, which is the central one. V4 states are very different than the eastern ones and still different even to the western states. But for example economically its west>central>southern>eastern. Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece have now lower quality of life that its here. Now with Brexit i think CR might even overtake the UK in like 20 years.

Amazing video ✌️ Its one of the essentials if you want to become more Czech, you have to think of Czech republic always as a central europe, I know its a little silly, but we are seriously crazy about it 😂 You can say eastern europe only for fun purposes, never meant seriously 😃 it is also a way how we reconize “dummy western” tourists 😃 I mean how tf can you say that vienna is western and prague is eastern if prague is actually situated more to the west than vienna 😂😂 come on, Im czech I had to make this point 😂 but seriously, you could see that the approach to you would change dramatically as we would consider you one of “us” or “culturally educated” at least 😃 thanks for this awesome video, love from Denmark

We learn in schools that we're central Europe, so when somebody talks about eastern Europe, we think of Russia and surrounding countries. Since Czechoslovakia was invaded and occupied by CCCP for 20 years, people find such associations offensive...but of course, the rest of the world simpy divides Europe into western and eastern part.

Viktor Hošek Ferda Kotrmelec Czech people can’t seem to wrap their head around this one. Yes, in a geographical context (which determines the definition), Czech Republic is not an eastern country. But 99.99% of the time, the context of a discussion is not a geographical one, its not a cultural one, not an ethnic one... its POLITICAL!! Get it? Economical / political - including this effin video. So yeah, commenting on this video isn’t hard: CZ is an EASTERN / post-communist country - (there, Hitchslapped af) 👐

Tomas T Firstly I just gave a piece of advice, because a lot of people get seriously angry about it. Depends how you say it, I also joke about being eastern european, but many people are taking it as an insult. Secondly, I dont see your point, we used to be part of Germany too, are we Germans then ? We used to be part of Austria, Poland, Hungary, are we Austrians ? Polish ? Hungarian ? Politically, the world used to be devided between western and eastern parts and we were part of the eastern bloc, but what does it mean now, when there is not the eastern bloc anymore ? Its just something that is stuck in the heads of people, two sides against each other, eastXwest, but there is no reason to continue seperating europe like this anymore. I personally hate it, because thanks to this separating, I literally feel like a second class citizen here in Denmark, where I currently live. I cannot enter some clubs, its really hard to find a job and if you find a job, you end up washing dishes or cutting carrot 11 hours a day. And why is that ? Because Iam from a fking EASTERN EUROPE, eventhough Czech republic is literally in the freaking center of europe, our economy is good and growing, better than any eastern european country. So what exactly defines us as a eastern european country ? Are we poor ? No. Are we some kind of savages ? No. Is our economy bad ? No. Is our politics comparable to eastern european countries ? No. Have we been part of a eastern bloc 30 years ago ? Oh yes, love it. Thank you communists, now the whole world thinks that I am a piece of sht alongside with my whole “eastern” european nation. And yes, i got mad, I apologize. Perhaps it shows that truly I am a czech person and reveals the frustration many of us feel about it.

Weak argument. It's Eastern Europe because like most other Eastern European Countries it's slavic, christian and was a communistic satellite. It's social/cultural/geopolitical argument, not a geographical one. Makes no sense for Czechoslovakia to be considered Eastern Europe but once it splits into 2 countries - these two to become Central Europe. Also - Hungary is doing worse than Romania/Croatia in media freedom, corruption levels and comes very close in standard of living. I am not even going to make the comparison with Slovenia, because it blows away Hungary in most categories. But the monetary argument is invalid - Moldova and Romania share the same language and are the same people, but Moldova is 3-4 poorer than Romania. Shall we consider Romania Central Europe all of a sudden? This is not to show any disrespect to Czechia - it's a beautiful country with rich history and many things to be proud of.

About 90 % of the Czech population don't bother about this "Eastern Europe" thing and simply thinking something about stupid and uneducated people from the USA, or Western Europe (and probably the miserable quality of their educational systems).
Problem is, we actually really are not Eastern Europe - it is same as call Texas part of Mexico, or considering whole the southern USA be same with Latin America.
So the information in the video (and others calling CZ, SK, Poland, Hungary, etc. as an Eastern Europe) are pretty dubious and useless at all. For us from Czechia is (real) Eastern Europe same cultural shock as for the Western Europeans. Things are different, the alphabet is different, customs are different, food, religion...
There are US tourists in Prague who are trying to pay with Belorussian Rubles, trying to communicate with using a Russian dictionary in the hands, wearing the old Russian military hats in places where Soviet occupation forces were shooting to the crowd... meh. :-/
The guy is at best describing situation in the Czech Republic (from his angle of view), but definitely not Eastern Europe.

I am always surprised what the Americans (and probably the Canadians) know about the world out there. Calling it "eastern" is perceived by most as an insult. It is... underdeveloped countries, lying somewhere in Russia. Why? Because of historical, bad relations with the East (CCCP) and Communism.
