Buying the Boyfriend Experience in Japan

  • For the first time in centuries, young women in Japan are turning away from marriage and relationships. With more Japanese women entering the workforce, earning wages, and enjoying increased economic freedom, gender norms in the country are shifting, giving rise to new economic realities.
In Tokyo, a new wave of services is targeting these women, serving up the ""à la carte"" boyfriend experience. Whether they're craving a shoulder to cry on, a hunk to take shots with, or a late-night cuddle, Tokyo-based women can fulfill their relational needs on demand and by the hour.
Host Karley Sciortino travels to Tokyo to sample the services that are marketed to the country's powerful single women and speaks with the men who make a living catering to that need.

I was a bartender for a long time, and this doesn't feel too different from that. I had regulars who were divorced and lonely. They'd buy me drinks and tip well. I'd ask about their kids, and listen to their problems. It's a transactional relationship, but that doesn't mean you don't care. And you do get attached. I was very touched when some of my regulars reached out during the pandemic, when the bar I was working at was closed. Checking in, making sure I was ok. Service industry, whatever service you provide comes with a lot of emotional labor. If you're good at it, you either care a lot, or you're a psychopath and extremely good at pretending.

I mean to be honest, I hate to say this, but many relationships and marriages are essentially transactional. VERY RARELY do people like, GENUINELY care without either receiving something back in the form of money, attention, fame, status; etc. Most humans especially in today's world with little social interaction, CRAVE a sense of companionship and company so much they will pay for it, and I think many realize it's kind of an illusion, but most everything in life is an illusion when you really, sadly, think about it deeply.

What you didn't get that's not about crying itself, it's about sharing something personal and deep with someone else, what those women can't do with others, so, that's why they hire that kind of service. Why do you think people invite others to celebrate something, why do they share their secrets with someone, why do they want people near them in their saddest moments or in their important days?
You can cry alone, because you watched or read something which moved you, but, that's not the same, you're doing it alone and just keeping that for yourself.

I feel sorry for the boy hosts; they have to drink every night until morning. That's incredibly unhealthy and I'm pretty sure they can't have that lifestyle for long. Their life seems also very lonely and sad. The videos that the crying man showed are all from Thailand: I've seen them all and they are available on You Tube. My impression is that people are looking for love, no longer sex. Sex only lasts a few minutes and doesn't really give you any feeling of happiness especially if you are paying for it. However, being in the company of people and, for example, crying together, as the women in the video pointed out, gives you a feeling of togetherness or belonging: that's exactly the feeling that we have lost in the so called "civilized" society. We are longing to feel each other again and I think, in the end we will!

Same as everything else, it isn't all glitz and glamour, there's always a quota to meet for the hosts plus you literally have to drink day in day out wether you want to or not on top of starting early and daily chores. By the time you're near 30 they turf you out because no one wants older men in that service. So you're out of a job with a fucked liver and kidneys. One of hosts in the documentary explains that while doing the job he got to a point of where he was playing a role that much for his job by the end of it he wasn't sure of who he really was, it impacted negatively on his view of women and as a result ended up unable to actually get into a realistic relationship and was lonely because of it. All these are nice and interesting BUT
no way i would be paying someone to make me cry.
I can cry on my own and I have been crying nonstop. For free.

imagine having repressed your feelings for so long, you need someone to give you permission to cry :/

I thought about that too. Having to pay for someone to pretend to care about you is really sad. Can you imagine how the women feel if that can’t afford to pay for something like this?
