This scene right here was the first time Marcus killed a locust drone. That is why he struggled and somewhat was in shocked into what he was fighting

Also cause they was front line locust, forged on the front lines of the lambent wars. Basically they was pulled from the war to exterminate humanity as quickly as possible. The ones we see in later gears are nowhere near as experienced as the ones we are going to see here

I mean to be fair he struggled because he was fighting a locust in close combat, he probably would have struggled with this in the later games to. They're strong af and marcus isn't master chief
