Doll test - The effects of racism on children (ENG)

  • The "doll test" is a psychological experiment designed in the 1940s in the USA to test the degree of marginalization felt by African American children caused by prejudice, discrimination and racial segregation. Given the considerable increase of the phenomenon of migration in Europe in recent years we decided to re-create the test with Italian children. In fact, thousands of migrants land each year on the Mediterranean coast in search of a better future, some to improve their economic conditions, others are political refugees, fleeing from war zones, discrimination and sometimes ethnic, religious or political persecution. 2015 was considered the year of the 'invasion' that threatened to wipe out social, economic and cultural balances in Europe. The increasingly close surveillance of borders and frontiers could determine, however, a risk to definitively annihilate any possibility of dialogue or integration. In every European country live many second, third and fourth generation migrants, who are now fully-fledged citizens of these nations, like these Italian children. Yet, for many, they remain 'different', 'foreigners', a dangerous definition that, in recent times, could be illegitimately paired with the phenomenon of terrorism. Without a serious political and social change in perspective, we risk dangerously distorting the perception we have of others, and the perception that others have of themselves.

I remember being a kid and getting my first black barbie. I was so excited because I had a black friend from school and I finally had a doll that reminded me of her. I always liked pretending my dolls were people in my life. I was so excited to show my friend and I told her the doll reminded me of her. Her mom was offended by me saying that. I didn't understand why as a kid. I mean, I was a little redheaded kid and didn't even have a redheaded barbie, so the standard blonde one was always "myself". Looking back now I guess she assumed I meant "black people all look alike" i don't know...She was my favorite barbie though and I always thought she was the prettiest barbie I owned. She looked different from all my other barbies and it made her unique in my eyes. I also loved my friend. I was always an outcast in school and was bullied for how I looked. She never bullied me and she liked me for me. Her and I could rely on each other and would comfort each other when the other kids were being mean. My family moved away and never saw her again. For years I had wished to go back because even at my new school kids would bully me. I no longer had that person who would comfort. I was heartbroken and still miss her dearly. I hope she's doing well and I hope things went better for her after I left.

My impression is that these children are responding, not what they think, but what they think the adult expects of them. If I am right, it is heartbreaking that almost all of those children are convinced that adults expect those answers from them.

My third grader told me he doesn't like dark skinned kids in his class because they cause trouble in class and are usually mean or rude. He is a mixed kid, too. His mom has dark skin.
His best friend is dark skinned, from South America.
Racism is definitely learned and part of it stems from other parents raising really rude kids who don't respect social conventions or have empathy. Its a cultural issue.
I can't just lie to him and tell him he's wrong. All i can say is that may be true of the kids in your class and that it will be up to you to determine who is rude and mean. Be careful with the trap of predudice but be aware and be honest with yourself.
If it happens to be mostly dark skinned people than thats not your fault buddy!

Guys please do not write hate comments about those kids. They are kids!!! It's important to recognize that children are HIGHLY impressionable and can absorb biases from the environment around them. This doesn't imply that the kids are themselves bad or good; rather, it only underscores the significance of addressing the broader issue of society's influence on young minds (especially when it comes to topics such as racism)❤

I remember that as a child, around 8-10, I used to collect baby dolls. It didn't matter which color doll I had; I had white dolls and black dolls. I cared for them both equally and got them their own baby supplies (I was taking care of them with real baby stuff I brought with allowance, lol), and one day I went into a store with one specific baby doll, and she had fair skin. I have light brown skin (just to let you know), and I put the doll in the shopping cart seat where a kid would usually sit (I don't know what the seat is called), and this woman with light skin told my mother, "Why does she have a doll with a skin color that doesn't match hers?" It's really saddening that racism is put on children and makes them feel this way. Just remember that no matter what race you are, you are beautiful. Our skin is nothing to be ashamed about, its just who you are! 🥰💚

The fact that the girl at the end felt offended by the fact that she was black was especially heartbreaking for me. That shows that she feels as though it is an insult to be called black, and therefor to be black is wrong. Meaning she feels inferior because of it. It's sad that the effect of racism has even touched our children. What is this world that we are living in?

@Arvind Emmanuel: i totally agree with you. and what makes it so bad is that the original "Human" has taken on the ways of "Mankind." most say ( and think ) well, same thing. mankind is just a way to say all humans on earth making up mankind as one but no. I beg to differ. Mankind is close to the human in likeness. He has two arms, two legs, and a head ( Arm, Leg, Leg, Arm, Head, acronym: ALLAH ) but he ( mankind ) lacks the property of "Hue" and you can't just give yourself an attribute that you don't possess. this is one of 3 of the most hidden secrets to the world that's right in our faces. the Human is the only one that can produce multicolored races. This is not just by chance. God did this so that we could live forever and so could he through us. Mankind does not have this ability. Even when God said, "let there be light," it came from within triple blackness, void, nothing. as the tree that bares fruit is within the seed beneath the darkness of earth. it shall bring an abundance of life. that's the difference between human and mankind.

I think this test is absolutelly wrong. Categories "nice" or "pretty" are ok, they say about a child's prefers. But category "bad/good" is different. What I see is that a child sitting if front of two dolls has to choose one doll aswering each question. The children are ok when aswering about pretty, nice, white/black, because these categories don't include "bad/good". But look at them when they're asked "which one is bad?" They still think that they HAVE TO choose ONE! Why even ask? I mean... If we don't pose bad (or stupid) questions we won't get bad (or stupid) answers. Asking this they made the children think that black is bad and they are similar to this. What if those kids didn't even think that way? Maybe I'm wrong.... But I wouldn't put kids in such situation where they have to choose black or white.

This is the biggest crock of bull ever. Number one the one asking questions is putting ideas in the child's mind. Why not ask how you feel about each doll instead of forcing kids how to think. Also, we need to blame society. Since we are young children, we are taught at young age that dark/black is evil, bad, and ugly. Most evil characters in fairy tales are depicted as dark or are seen wearing black. What about witches? black cats? Vampires? Why do we wear black to a funeral and why is white associated with a wedding? Remember Snow White is good and pretty. Why are we told to come home before dark? I could go on and on here, but this doll test means nothing.

It reinforces how even subtle micro-aggressions can change the trajectory of a human being's future, and completely and insidiously insert a lie so deeply internalized as to affect one's sense of self for a lifetime. We must work every day to become more aware of our own awareness, language, and culturally internalized belief systems and how these inform and influence our words and actions.

Not shooting any shade, but does anyone else feel that this test is not really a good one? Why not instead say that there are dolls for them to play with and then leave the room and see which one they play with. Then ask them why? I don't know I feel there is a better way....

If you read the info at the beginning, they are recreating a test done many years ago, and the children in the vid were as honest as the ones in the original. It’s a sad reality, however, it’s a well done test to see how these children perceive these dolls, based on today’s racial issues. The children are not forced to pick only one doll, they could have said “neither” or “both”, but being small they answered in a way that was genuine. Even their reactions towards the end is important. It shows us how damaging a child’s perception of race can be towards themselves or others.

And the question wasn't which one's skin colour do you not like/think is ugly. It was which one do you relate with more and kids aren't going to be thinking logically lets be real if most of their friends are white then they'll obviously say the white doll. There where also various things like the kid who seemed confident with his answers at first but changed his answers half way through doesn't that show that by asking these questions your just making them more uncomfortable or the whole thing is fake. The whole set up is cruel and biased.
