Ida was only 23 in this film. Amazing! This is a wonderful picture, which I had not seen previously. Elsa Lancaster popped up in many places, and she did an excellent job here. Very well cast.

Discovered this movie a week ago. Can’t get enough of it. A black & white gem with perfect casting headed by the mesmerizing Ida Lupino. The cinematography is masterful from the opening credits to the final scene. This film is from the stage play of the same name. We must thank the playwrights Reginald Denham and Edward Percy. “You know!” ⭐️

My first time viewing this film. Absolutely fabulous acting on the part of all. The sets were beautifully accomplished and the music was suspenseful. Of course, Ida Lupino was an actress unmatched.

Ida Lupino was great and everyone here rightly praises her, but for me the real revelation here was Louis Hayward. I've never seen him play such a sly and crafty part before as usually I see him only in Adventure movies like Iron Mask, Monte Cristo and Black Arrow. He was superb in his sly maneuverings and piecing things together and deserves just as much praise as Ida in my opinion! Both should have been Oscar-Nominated in 1941 but were ignored.
When I was a kid in the 50s, we used to watch Mr. Adams & Eve on TV with Ida Lupino and Howard Duff. Most folks don't know she wrote and directred so many films about women's rights. She was truly a pioneer from a very famouse family!

An excellent period piece that shows its origins as a play but takes one along on a little trip to hell, building the claustrophobia, the sense of hopelessness, one step at a time. Well-played by all - the frivolous old lady, the charming bounder, the dim-witted, seduceable maid, the two crazy sisters...And in the middle, Ida Lupino, stopping at nothing to try to hold it all together. I found Lupino mesmerizing from start to finish, never overacting, quietly trusting her innate sense of proportion and inner strength. Amazing to think she was only 23 years old when she made this. By the way, the (mostly atonal) music by Ernst Toch was a key part of the tense atmosphere. A class act all around. Thanks so much for posting!

Watched this movie at age 14 when my entire family was asleep upstairs. Ida Ljlino became one of my all time favorite actresses and the studio made production actually enhances the atmosphere which a location shoot could not achieve.

Ida Lupino was so adorable, even when she turned into Anthony Perkins. It's hard to imagine any modern actor of 23 being able to give a performance like this.
My favorite Hollywood star. Not only a beautiful woman and great actress, but a very smart director and producer - for both the movies and television. What a talent!
My dad, born in the wilds of Montana in 1920, would talk about the actresses that we would see doing guest appearances on TV dramas, letting me know who had been ingenues and/or big movie stars back in the day and how the public felt about them. Gave me a greater appreciation for the old films. Ida Lupino was one of those big movie stars he talked about. Mom tended to speak of the actors and how handsome they were.
Listen to the radio adaptation of "Bad Man" with Orson Welles and Ida Lupino done a year before this film in 1940. The interview with the stars after the performance is worth the entire radio show. Orson Welles and Ida Lupino obviously knew each other quite well and their conversation as to Ida Lupino's acting family and how unique they were is most fascinating. Ida tells Orson she is probably the only Actor (at the time) younger than Orson Welles! He really gets a kick out of her comments. I think it is on the Campbell Soup Hour with Orson Welles. Don't miss this one as it is a gem and one of the Masterpieces from the Golden Age of Radio.
Remember doing this play in high school . Not a very well know or popular play or movie so I am happy t find a version on You tube. It was some 59 years ago so I forgot all the lines but I do remember what fun it was being in a cast as the only male. They basically eliminated the cart driver except for sticking his head in the door once.
I have this movie on DVD watched it several times. Still watching it again here find out more nuances. Such great acting. Always love Ida Lupino a fine Actress, Director and Producer. 💜🌷
What an engaging, albeit sinister little film....!! A Perfect Cast of characters in an eccentric menagerie of suspenseful self-interest. Elsa Lanchester was the Right Choice as Emily, where she exhibited the needed bizarre traits so reminiscent of her earlier role as 'The Bride Of Frankenstein'!! Ida Lupino breaks from here normal roles of somewhat introverted "tortured sensitivity" here to portray a constant "heightened intensity" throughout the film. THX Silver Screen for this delicious little Gem....!!! :-)
Ida Lupino was an absolute one of a kind, so understated, but an electric spirit. Her voice here mesmerized me when i first saw this at around age 5 and didn't fully understand it. Everyone else was in top form for a great story. What a treat it is to see this again with a different perspective, one of the really great little movies. I am enthralled by the great theatrical motion picture masterpieces left to us by Ida Lupino. Also, her long history of excellent direction and more. The great, great tragedy for her was in a word, vodka. It makes me sick to watch her films chronologically and see that delicate, wistful-featured face become hardened, with bloated, angry eyes. The personal life choices are easy to spot in movie actors: Bette Davis, another one. Bless Ida Lupino. She lived one heck of a complex, painful and gifted life.

I love, love Elsa Lanchester! Her character here is a scream. Charming movie, otherwise. Ida Lupino has also always been one of my favourites, ever since I first saw her in 'They Drive By Night". I loved the way she talked.
She was awesome -- if you haven't seen them yet, I recommend her in "Murder By Death", the "Night Gallery" episode "Green Fingers", and, of course, "Witness for the Prosecution".
Thanks for the upload.What a great fil , with a great ensemble cast.They all seemed to be having fun with the parts and it's only a shame that Ida , as great as she was , did not get to break character more often.The sisters were portrayed brilliantly if probably un-sensitively as suffering from mental health issues in today's climate.It was a shame to lose Mrs Fiske ,even though it was central to the plot and the 'Nephew' was played just wide enough by Hayward.Laughed out loud often me ol' cup o'tea and enjoyed the plot.The walled up safe was clever.

However I agree with you that Louise Hayward had more acting range than Dan Duryea as the later got few positive roles than the former. Hayward was amazing in all of his movies but unfortunately never got the due stardom. His "Lone Wolf Series" is my favourite one.
The films The Servant (1963) and especially Parasite (2019) clearly owe a lot of their themes and plots to this movie. It's influenced more than people give it credit for and to me it's clearly one of the less undiscovered and unknown gems of the 40s. Unbelievable this is regularly ignored by TV Channels and probably hasn't been shown regularly anywhere in decades! TV Companies really are the pits with underrated movies and just show the same dross on repeat endlessly...
I just watched the remake "The Mad Room" (1969) which reworks the plot quite a bit. It stars Shelley Winters and Stella Stevens. You can see how this movie was based on a play. And yes, shades of "Arsenic and Old Lace". Thanks for posting it.

Great melodrama although the title is somewhat misleading. Ida Lupino was excellent as always. Really enjoyed Elsa Lanchesters performance too. Always chose roles slightly off kilter.
Strange the one you think is sane is the most dangerous. Love Ida Lupino and Elsa Lancaster they are favorites, really all the actors in this are perfect for their parts. Soo many character actors were soo wonderful! The movies would not have been anything without them ... this is a perfect movie to watch on a cozy rainy day. Up there with Great Expectations. This reminds me of another movie but I cant remember the name of it? Other films with the same kind of suspense are Double indemnity, Street Car named desire and Mildred Pierce.
This movie was hard to watch as my wife and I were also victims of a home invasion of sorts. We had to put locks on all of the doors in our house and were told by the Prince William County, VA police that we had to feed and lodge the miscreant who came to stay. My wife had cat feces put in her lunch by said woman. Sadly, this movie made us feel sorry for Ellen as the woman who owned this house seemed frivolous. But it was not incumbent upon her to take in these people and she certainly deserved to live quietly and enjoy what she had lawfully earned.
Funny how this type of story has you hoping for the murderer to escape justice or punishment! Frightening reality of how easily we compromise,regarding wrongs that we previously condemned, if we feel it is justifiable.
It tried to eleicit sympathy for Lupino's character, but it didn't work for me. Not one bit. When she imposed upon her employer to put up with those two insufferable nutcase sisters for two months, I began to hate her. When she had the gall to criticize her benefactor for not being willing to put up with them forever, I wanted to slap the sense of entitlement right out of her. When she did the unthinkable, I went looking for a rope and sturdy branch. At no point after that did i think she was anything but an insane killer.
This takes awhile to get started, but Ida carries it just fine. I love Elsa in her twittery best, and Evelyn Keyes in a nice dramatic turn. Louis Hayward (Mr. Lupino at the time, I think?), quite a sleazy relative.
SPOILER ; Happy how? Ellen is tried for murder and hanged (on Lucy's testimony) , the miscreant nephew Albert goes to jail for embezzlement and the 2 sisters are packed off to an asylum. Did I miss something?
Elsa Lanchester played The Bride of Frankenstein. She was perfect for that with her big, creepy eyes. I’m very surprised that no one has mentioned that, including the person who uploaded this film!!

The films The Servant (1963) and especially Parasite (2019) clearly owe a lot of their themes and plots to this movie. It's influenced more than people give it credit for and to me it's clearly one of the less undiscovered and unknown gems of the 40s.
Unbelievable this is regularly ignored by TV Channels and probably hasn't been shown regularly anywhere in decades! TV Companies really are the pits with underrated movies and just show the same dross on repeat endlessly...
I just watched the remake "The Mad Room" (1969) which reworks the plot quite a bit. It stars Shelley Winters and Stella Stevens. You can see how this movie was based on a play. And yes, shades of "Arsenic and Old Lace". Thanks for posting it.

Great melodrama although the title is somewhat misleading. Ida Lupino was excellent as always. Really enjoyed Elsa Lanchesters performance too. Always chose roles slightly off kilter.
Strange the one you think is sane is the most dangerous. Love Ida Lupino and Elsa Lancaster they are favorites, really all the actors in this are perfect for their parts. Soo many character actors were soo wonderful! The movies would not have been anything without them ... this is a perfect movie to watch on a cozy rainy day. Up there with Great Expectations. This reminds me of another movie but I cant remember the name of it?
Other films with the same kind of suspense are Double indemnity, Street Car named desire and Mildred Pierce.
A very dark Arsenic and Old Lace?
This movie was hard to watch as my wife and I were also victims of a home invasion of sorts. We had to put locks on all of the doors in our house and were told by the Prince William County, VA police that we had to feed and lodge the miscreant who came to stay. My wife had cat feces put in her lunch by said woman. Sadly, this movie made us feel sorry for Ellen as the woman who owned this house seemed frivolous. But it was not incumbent upon her to take in these people and she certainly deserved to live quietly and enjoy what she had lawfully earned.

Funny how this type of story has you hoping for the murderer to escape justice or punishment! Frightening reality of how easily we compromise,regarding wrongs that we previously condemned, if we feel it is justifiable.
Movie codes in the Western World prevented the depiction of profiting from crime.
I had to wonder if she really walked to the authorities or did she walk away?
Insightful observation and sadly true.
It tried to eleicit sympathy for Lupino's character, but it didn't work for me. Not one bit. When she imposed upon her employer to put up with those two insufferable nutcase sisters for two months, I began to hate her. When she had the gall to criticize her benefactor for not being willing to put up with them forever, I wanted to slap the sense of entitlement right out of her. When she did the unthinkable, I went looking for a rope and sturdy branch. At no point after that did i think she was anything but an insane killer.
Real actors great performance story lines were so much better in the olden days
This takes awhile to get started, but Ida carries it just fine. I love Elsa in her twittery best, and Evelyn Keyes in a nice dramatic turn. Louis Hayward (Mr. Lupino at the time, I think?), quite a sleazy relative.

Happy how? Ellen is tried for murder and hanged (on Lucy's testimony) , the miscreant nephew Albert goes to jail for embezzlement and the 2 sisters are packed off to an asylum. Did I miss something?
