Shough holds the ball too long. All he's been good for is some QB runs. That's really it. Morton's time should be now. Stop the seniority choice. Morton is better.
Exactly. Shough has made some decent plays but nothing that Morton cant do as well. Morton is a sharper QB, more athletic, stronger arm, just needs more experience so get him on the field asap

Long time Texas Tech fan and former Tech athlete. I am all in on McGuire and giving him the time to get this on a path to long-term success as opposed to one good year. That said, you DO NOT have the same amount of time to get things right with the portal and all of the other Universities trying to do the same. This team did not quit this week after the slop-fest last week in Wyoming. The could have laid an egg and gone jelly side down, but they didn't. That means they actually believe in what McGuire is selling and so do the recruits. The truth is this: we simply are not quite there yet. We do not have the same caliber of athletes, size and speed across the board as a top 10 team. We are getting closer and the mindset is changing, but we simply aren't there yet.
From the position of armchair QB here are the list of things that need to happen this week and moving forward:
1. Improved mental acuity in game situations. poorly timed penalties shoot drives dead and extend drives for them. CANNOT continue at this pace.
2. O-line has got to improve with penalties and protection. 71 had a horrible game at left tackle
3.Joey has got to handle field position better and slow down on the gunslinger approach. Sometimes analytics do not account for what just happened to the defense on the previous drive.
4. D-fense has to improve tackling in space. Bad angles and out of position too often.
5. Kicking game has to be addressed. Kid has a nice leg but ZERO confidence. He looks like he knows it aint goin thru.
6. Behren Morton deserves a look as Shough has not gotten it done q weeks in a row. Great kid, good QB but seems to lack the "it thing". Prolly would be a terrific QB in a setting where all the players around him are better, but........
7. Absolutely HAVE to find a way to use Mason Tharp to make a difference. Dude is 6'9" tall, has great hands and runs like an deer at his height. Use that more like we did tonight.
8. And finally, the defense has to create take-aways. Football games turn on take-aways when other parts of the team are not there yet.
Over and out from McKinney, TX. Keep the guns up and keep pulling for success. Defeatist attitudes are the death knell for a program in transition.

Shough is simply not going to take Tech to the next level. If his maturity and poise and decision making was supposed to be better than Morton, we need to rethink that. Morton needs to be starting. After what he showed last year as a freshman, he needs to be under center.
Tech’s problem was not Shough. It’s your offensive line. The Ducks got to him too many times. Also, you have no good running backs, but maybe that’s also the line. Oregon’s running backs are good, but the Ducks O line was also weak today so it didn’t look like it. Seems like both defensive lines were quite good. I saw one Duck fan call Shough Oregon’s secret weapon for this game. While funny, it’s just not true. The line caused the late turnover, but it was unlikely Tech would have won the game anyway. Even so, I thought Tech played way better than I expected after seeing them at Wyoming. Except for the galactically stupid decision to go for it on 4th and two from your own 38 late in the game, which is on your coach, along with the O line weakness, Tech played very well. They can expect to win some games this year. But I’m a duck, so Go Ducks!
@@HQBergeron this is one of the best assessments I’ve seen. Spot on for the most part. I agree with the dumbass decision to go for it on 4th and 2. That was deflating. I do think that our QB makes too many mistakes though. Mistakes that he can control. O-line is inconsistent.
Analytics are a guide, not an excuse.
Fans did their part. Crowd was amazing. Time for a change at QB.

Look, we could be 2-0 playing cream puffs, instead we're 0-2 playing quality opponents, I much prefer it this way! We have to tweak some things before conference starts but we are going to be OK! Many are just overreacting because of 0-2. Take a deep breath and relax. These 2 losses are going to better prepare us for conference. I wish our pre conference games were all tough teams instead of weak teams but that's just me! WreckEM!!

I dont see pros going for it from their 33 while they are ahead in the 4th quarter. Frankly, even Coach Leach would not have gone for it there, unless we were behind.

Outside of a couple plays... Shough did well. One INT was when #9 was jerked aside by defense and it was picked. The #71 offense had the penalties racked up...

Tyler only had one major mistake at the end. Tyler did well running.
Tired of hearing about the magic number and analytics. Joey said one of the reasons he’s aggressive on 4th down is because he trusts his defense. So do you trust your defense if you are up in the 4th quarter and you go for it on 4th down from your own 33? Yes we can’t lose that bad on the turnover battle but that specific call lost this game. Analytics? It’s such a crutch.
Especially after the defense just got off the field. Oregon just had a lengthy scoring drive. Use the talented kicker and make the opponent earn the points.

I’m curious…you said “good job”. What exactly did you think was good about what McGuire did in that game? I really am interested to hear your side.
As someone who hasn't watched TT football as much as the fans here, I've watched them enough to have some thoughts that are a little less harsh than what I've heard over the past two weeks. To be fair, yes, I am a Wyoming fan, but I've always been brutally honest about them. That being said, the first comment I have, is that the derision that came following their loss to us last week, was way too much. Despite what some analysts and fans might think, Wyoming is not the worst team in the country, or even our conference. Our defense was one of the best in the country last season and if it wasn't for the transfer portal, we would be in pretty good shape. All this is to say that TT fell into the same trap that many teams have, even in our worst seasons, of looking past us and thinking it will be too easy. In different years, Texas, Tennessee, Mizzou, Miss. St, etc, have had the same experience. While some were lucky enough to regroup and squeak by, others didn't. It's one of the reasons we've had a notoriously bad time of getting games with Power 5 teams, ESPECIALLY home games. There is just too much risk for too little reward, it is much better to play a team like Portland and win by 60 (a chickenshit move in my book, but an understandable one 🤷♀️).
This is why I said last week that I was positive that they were going to play against Oregon much better than everyone was fearing. Comments like, "If we lost to Wyoming, Oregon will kill us", were everywhere. But I was right, for the most part the Red Raiders played a very good game. It only came down to a few key plays (and I do think they got hosed a few times by the refs). Unfortunately, most of those plays seemed to revolve around bad moves by the QB. Maybe he has lost confidence, but if he hadn't made those errors, I'm sure they'd have had it won. And I don't see that Oregon has anything to be acting so hot about; they can talk all they want about Tech being overrated, but all I've seen them do so far, is blow out a tiny team and luck out against one that was supposed to be overrated.
Maybe it's because I'm used to supporting a team that no one ever expects to be consistently being a Top 25 team, that I have an easier time saying that things don't look as bleak as many Tech fans think they do. I really think they can still have a great season if they can 1. Get past the idea that their season is already lost and 2. Replace the quarterback if he can't get it together right quick. I actually think the first will be the harder of the two, but I for one, will be watching and rooting for them. Best of luck, from Wyoming 🤠👍

McGuire was a huge reason the team lost the game. Terrible decision making. Shough made a lot of mistakes but McGuire is the head man in charge. He simply coached a bad game yesterday and deserves the bulk of the criticism.
man this game took years off my life. If TT can play the way they did tonight the rest of the season, can definitely see ya'll running the table in the Big 12.

I had some issue with the WY loss. I think they at least played harder against OR. I think we could have won it, but it was at least a better showing.

McGuire, Kittley, and Shough lost this game and arguably the Wyoming game. The lines were bad in both games and many dumb penalties were made by a vetted team. But this mostly falls on the coaches and Shough. Oregon handed you this game and a vetted team couldn't put them away... Offseason propaganda is not matching up the what yall put on national television two weeks in a row.
Man our offensive line is really bad. Tyler was running for his life in the pocket half the game and the left tackle bro I have no words for him man. We have to fix things. I trust the process though 💪🏼
I thought they gave him tons of time for the most part. He’s got to make decisions a bit quicker. He had open receivers multiple times and was hesitant to make the throw.

Great loss guys. Everyone is so excited to start 0-2. This was a better than expected performance but every single team remaining our schedule looks better than us. The turnovers, the lack of pass rush, the missed field goals and the bad play calls.

Besides Oregons penalties Tyler was the only reason you were in the game. He’s a good qb, you need to work on protecting him in the pocket. You guys should do well in conference play 👍

Reality - we are 0-2. We should have won this game by 10. The last thing on my mind right now is winning a B12 Championship. I just want to win the first.
I mean Oregon is really good. Tech had costly turnovers but Oregon also had a ton of penalties. We likely won't face a team this good until we play Texas. Also the defense I thought did really well despite all of the injuries. I feel pretty confident about most of the games going forward. I only see k-state, @Kansas, and @Texas being real issues

Never watching this team again. Call me a fair-weather fan all you want but growing up with the 2010s pit of subpar performances and disappointing year after year, these past two games have shown me that we're just going to get a Kingsbury 2.0, and this university will never see long-term success as long as this sport is afloat and nationally relevant. I'd like to be alive to see this university pull a conference championship (a standalone one!) and I think it's abysmal to think that a significant portion of the fanbase/alumni will never see that transpire.

@@JPinShenzhenI don't think tech will struggle to make a bowl game. Look at their remaining schedule. They should go on a 4 game win streak here beating and fcs school, WVU, Houston, and Baylor. Then they have Kansas State at home and if they play like they did today they could win that one because I think Oregon is better than k-state. So potentially 5-2 but should at least be 4-3 after the k-state game.
The next 4 games are all winnable as well with @byu, TCU, @kansas, and UCF. Will probably win both home games and I think @byu as well but Kansas could be pretty tough. So now we're looking at anywhere from 7-4 to 9-2 but I'm betting 8-3 by the Texas game which is most likely gonna be huge L so I realistically see 8-4. Not because Texas tech is necessarily really good but because the big 12 is pretty bad this year and Texas tech is better than most of them.
The Wyoming loss was unfortunate and definitely put a damper on the season but I never expected us to beat Oregon in the first place so a close loss when we were -3 in turnovers doesn't make me feel worse about this team at all

I do think Mills was getting smoked all game, and if from what I heard Jordan Brown ran the wrong route. The final one was a hail mary. I don't think that should count really. One was pretty awful though. I guess all I'm saying is sometimes we don't include the contexts on INTs.
