OldBenz I've visited the site and it's quite good
No Cads, just an engineer with a ruler and a pencil, respect.
I have stock W123 model 200, year 1980, it's 42 years old now and I use it daily, it's just unbelievable car, comfort, durable, enjoyable to drive, yes it's one of the best sedan ever made in history.
Gone are the days Mercedes made cars like this that could last a century.
My mechanic tells me that my 2002 C220 is the last of Mercedes's long lasting cars. :) Holding my fingers!
Noam Lavi yea you can always drop a used motor in when they die. The 5 speed automatic is basically bulletproof in that car. I had a ‘98 C43 amg, and it was very well built. A guy bought it from me and did a C55 conversion on it.
Love my 83 300d
I agree with you hamskyxxx- Mercedes in the 1970's had BANK VAULT solidity. And in those days Mercedes had NO competition. Now they have BMW, AUDI, TELSLA and others to compete against.
What made them lose the ability?
I don't know when I first saw the W123 Mercedes-Benz. I remember admiring the appearance of the car. I find it more attractive than anything currently produced by Mercedes.
the 70s and 80s mechanical workshops hated this car because rarely needs to repair .
i am still feeling in love everytime i see this model.
thanks 4 sharing
You couldn't get much closer to absolute unequivocal perfection than the W123. No wonder why my dad's 300TD is at 431,000 miles and counting
Just rulers, sliders, markers and boards.
And a hell of a lot of engineering and artistry.
Power off mind.
1978 I started a apprenticeship, the boss of one departement introduced proudly his new W123 one day which only few could afford actually; my father had also one in the same colour so I decided to go home at lunch and I returned with my fathers car, drove inside the company and stopped directely infront of the window of this fellows bureau ! I left the car sat on the fender and waved to him , he looked out, jumped from his chair with wide eyeballs and run outside in order to eat me alive :) :), luckily he grasped what was going on just infront of me. That story gave a good laugh in the company but it was a little dangerous for me since I was only a 18 year old trainee mucks one of the bosses, but the fun of it was worth it
btw.: I had lots of cars since but my fathers 240 D was inimitable;
one of the last quality products of MB. It ended with the first C-Class and the reign of the Management-Dilberts over the Engineers
lol great story man! :D
I enjoy driving my 1981 Mercedes diesel 240d with the 4 speed manual. Best car I have ever owned.
They should never have stopped making these.
I agree, but then no other car maker would have competition lol
from 43 year's this car still working a taxi car in my country. 😍
Hello friend, are you from Maruecos ?, there are many of these cars still, they say😃💪
@@franciscopereira9735 all Arabian countries. But yes mostly Morocco
@@seddam Ok greetings friend from Paraguay.
I had a 300D when I was 20, I always remember it fondly😊

I had two W123s. Mechanically sound and very very reliable. I still admire them, just like the band in this video who played the same tunes for over 20 minutes without showing any fatigue. 👍🏻
The best car of all time w123💪👏👏👏
Francisco Pereira. I never drove a W123 before. I own two W124s and love the way they look and drive. I like the way W123 looks as well.
I have had a W123 Turbo for several years, it was only stolen years ago, I miss it a lot.😢
That's what i'm scared of with mine. These things are so easy to break into and start up without a key. Hopefully the thieves aren't familiar with glow plugs ;)
w123 300d over 1.2m km still driving like new.
👏👏👏💪 👌
ELEGANT + STYLISH+ QUALITY + PERFORMANCE= MERCEDES BENZ !
I think Mercedes can still sell them if they start the production again
I would sell a lung, kidney, and testicle for a new-off-the-line W123 300TD if it was made to the same quality!
superweh super lame, not like they weren’t safe cars. I daily a ‘88 560sel, and its definitely a sturdy safe car.
@superweh haha it would. Emission crap was made because expectation of life time of modern cars are short. Safety? Most modern cars are lass safety than this one.
@@nemonooitwhat about cheap Chinese cars?? They don't meet nothing
i would buy
The best car in the universe
VINI8231 8world famous best car in the world. Thak you.
I fully agree! They're still driving everywhere in the world...
W123 200D/240D/300D best car ever made from the 20st century.
Agreed, but to clarify best family car in the world. Porsche is still the best overall car I. The world
Farina Marcina , maybe for you he best is Fiat Panda or Chevrolet kalos ;)
My dad had bought this car in 1983 in Dubai. We were the only people who had a Mercedes Benz at that time in the area that we stayed. This was the last car my dad bought for himself. He drove it till 1996 after which he retired and had to go back to India. It actually clocked 1.5 million km and was still running. I really miss this car. The technology and system it had, japanese car didnt have it until the late 1990's.
nice music too.. luv the 70's era
Genau, so wurde eine Legende geboren! A class of its own
It's a pity that such cars will be never develop again 😢
It is true😔of the best that Mercedes did was the w 123💪Me every time I see one on the street 😥
I had one when I was 20 years old
The 190e and s class up until the w220 were really solid too
So True!! In those days they did not design things to a "price point". They did not spare any expense, just developed the ABSOLUTE BEST they could!! in terms of engineering and functionality. Every single piece in that car had a functional purpose!
@@lotusjaggarage2989 w220 was weak compared to w140
Is this the most durable sedan ever ? I had 1981 - 250 back in the eighties, a magnificent car, perhaps the best I ever had :)
the king, the best car ever made by mercedes and its just standing in front off the door.
I cant take my eyes off my beauty:))))
it's a she, the queen of cars
This IS Mercedes.
Remembering 1992 this WAS Mercedes.
Damn now that music is stuck in my head!!!!
IMHO, one of the most satisfying videos on CZcams!
Music match = 100%.
Best viewed and listened on 1.5 speed.
Ownership of one of these perfectly made W123's, especially the Turbo Diesel's, draws you in to share how well it was designed and built. I thought those people were nuts until I bought one- wow. As my DD I have a white, California, 1983 300D Turbo Diesel with 345K on the clock that drives amazingly well and shows no sign of stopping. My responsibility is to keep it in good shape for the next person that owns it as it will likely out-live me (as it did the original owner). I love my W123!
Christopher Racine very kewl story!
Diesel, too slow though. I have a 280E, will go 120mph+ on the freeway easily.
Christopher Racine , well said! The 5 cylinder turbo i bought for a daily driver in 2015 feels amazing as it shifts through the gears. I found a good one with 221,000 miles so i passed on a newer car to replace my 1985 Audi 5000 and went with the best!
After a couple years i did get a newer 2nd car but the 300d is running perfect
Respect!
@@saintpreferred9223 My '83 300D Turbo is NOT slow at all. I'm the 2nd owner of this awesome diesel and I have it running the best as ever even with 389K miles. This 617.952 is running better as the miles add up. For my car(s) the key to have these OM617A Turbo Diesels run so well even after 40+ years is to keep the vacuum system working well. How the engine works with the AT via vacuum really changes how these cars drive at any age. Not to mention changing the oil every 3K miles as well. My car has great pickup and has no problem passing others on the freeway or on hills. The only thing I did to it was to increase the fuel pressure going into the IP (which is stock) . I love these cars. I've owned 4 of these W123's (only one now) and am looking for another... . This white '83 was my first and is my DD. Love it!
My grandfather had one of these in the beige color, he gave it away to a fellow since he needed a bigger car, it clocked over one million km when he passed over the ownership, nothing other than regular servicing following the service manual that came with the car, as far as i know the car is still in use to this day as a daily driver, mind you it reached one million before the year 2000...
The amount of thought that went into designing this masterpiece is just incredible and it reflects in it's overall build quality, they sure as heck don't make them like they used to, not even close.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👌
The last car designed for eternity + 1 day.
From all the W124's I see around including mine... I do believe that would be the last of the one series E classes designed to last forever and a day.
Mother of all cars.
Bruno Sacco was one of the designers of the W123, I love that car!
Nota 100; sólo Mercedes pudo hacerlo. Amo Mercedes Benz!
the finest car ever made.
Thanks for this opportunity to see how this remarkable Benz came to be, wonderful!
This was a very good watch. It is no wonder these cars are almost perpetual motion machines. We had 5 different W123 cars in the family when I grew up in the late 80s and 90s. One apricot orange 1976 230, A green 280, a Champagne metallic and a Brown metallic 1982 230E, and a blue 1985 230E. And one time we got to borrow a silver metallic 1977 280CE. The W123 was the ultimate family car. It was a very sad day when the last one was sold off in late 2001. But 19 years later I finally bought my own. A Nickelgrün 1979 230 with a green interior, painted hubcaps and white stripe tires. It is very fun.
It is good to see these cars in test in Brazil, and use the cargo company Varig and its boeing 707 PP-VLI. Really cool
The best mass produced automobile of all time. This video is pure sex!
I remember first watching Australia's Sale Of The Century as a kid in 1981 and seeing one of these as the top prize shining like a jewel on display, among the rest of the prizes.
A couple of years later they changed to BMW 7 series and I remember at 9 years old or so, feeling like it was a down grade.
I saw some, not many, but some still in use as taxis in Barcelona in 1999.
I just love the subdued elegance of this model. I can't decide if I like the round headlights surrounded by louvres, or the square jobbies.
They both look magnificent.
I am lucky to have my grandpa's custom-made 1985 W123. Legendary cars built for life. Although I would buy a new one, but for sure am keeping this fortune for the rest of my life.
I enjoyed having my '85 280E!! It's comfy as a sofa without making the car roll like a dice, absolutely well built for its age (or any era 4 that matter) and has a calm driving character despite still having 4MT (most cars then probably transferred to at least 5MT)
I love the way classic Jaguar owners eyeballs lock on when I go by them in my '85 w123 300D. You couldn't pay me enough to own one of their nightmares. Cheers
I reckon Jaguars are pussy cats!!
Ive got both and can tell you the Mercedes will outlive the jaguar mechanically but the rust is much worse on the w123
that's hilarious
The birth of a legend
Damn!
W123 is the car of my childhood that I knew (at the time) I were never gonna own one. Growing up in Moscow, USSR in the 70's and 80's I have always looked at these cars like flying saucers, as only a handful pf foreign diplomats and even fewer Russians (who were a little bit more equal than others in rights and possibilities) could afford strolling down Moscow boulevards and prospects in these magnificent cars.
But some 40 years went by and look at me now, I already have parked in my garage a: w124; c208 and a w212. I strongly suspect that after watching this video my thirst for w123 will be reinvorced and I need to make room for one more, perhaps I have to more w212 to the driveway and put a w123 in its space under the roof...
About 20 years ago the sponge foam shift knob on my '83 300TD just had had it. I put it in a box and shipped it to MB America complaining, "This part has prematurely worn out at 246,000 miles. Is this part still under warranty as I think MB should make it last longer than the drive train." Two weeks later I got a wonderful letter from the US head with an apology for the oversight and a shiny new shift knob! He said my letter had been forwarded to HQ's quality assurance team so they could laugh as hard as he did.
In 2018, my independent MB shop surprised their oldest customer, me, with a nice steering wheel as the metal hoop was all that was left of mine...😁
Could you imagine if these beasts made a come back today? These were amazing cars, and there's many STILL on the road!!!!
Very thorough development. Therefore, reliability is unsurpassed.
True. German engineering is not the same. But even back in the day there were lots of migrant Turks on the MB assembly lines. Now the problem lies in the deterioration of German society as a whole...
Even with the resurgence of ethnic and monocultural nationalism, cars like this will not be produced again by any country. Only in the late 20th-century West could this happen, and only in Germany.
Das ist wunderbar!!
Disconnecting the radiator then towing another Mercedes up an Alpine pass. If that's not thorough testing I don't know what is. Bombproof German engineering!
👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 😃💪💪
+lmn28021992, but we don't know if they ever got to the top. I'm on my third 'Benz (W124 230E) and from a Mechanical Engineering background, I seriously doubt I could pull another car up a mountain pass with the radiator disconnected without blowing a head gasket or seizing the engine. One mustn't believe everything one sees.
with a steel head should be less prone to destroy a headgasket unless really hot
@@Visionery1 well that is a fair point! I was also extremely surprised at this test. Perhaps they were trying to see how long the engine would last before it blows/ seizes? I have a 2013 w204 Benz. Great car feels like a tank but not like these old ones that appear to be very well engineered
They were changing the thermo switch. Probably not decided which one to use exactly.
Love the W123!!
Best Mercedes ever made.
And also one of the best *cars* ever made all categories.
Built to last and runs forever.

Wonder the same

And Friedrich Geiger, who designed also many Mercedes cars since 1930's!
1976 war noch Qualität in den Autos
No words for the lack of words
the most beautiful merc ever made
These dudes spent so much time designing, over engineering and testing this car they didn’t even get time to have a hair cut - and this video is proof
Here in Colombia my uncle bought a blue 230E in 1985 with 0 kilometres. 37 years later needs some parte and mechanic replacements but he and I, we're happy to see it's beautiful design line
These kinds of tests makes the benz a world class car for centuries to come.

Mercedes is the best. 👍👍
Mercedes is the king of cars
This car saved my parents life in a frontal crash across 1985 summer, a few months later my dad bought w124
I remember when my father bought his W123 in half of 90s here in Czechia where you saw mostly old škodas 120 in that time, it was like alien from other planet, it was so big and....slow, but nobody cares it's slow, it was very comfortable car with many hi-tech features for that time.
Please appreciate this was at a time when BL was barely able to screw an Allegro together .
Wow...

Once upon a time... people who made CARS.
So much job, so much dedication, so much love for perfection and for things well done. Never an expensive car, but a jewel of engineering worth its price and the work of so many high class workers. Thanks to theese great engineers and for their proud legacy.
AWESOME video!
When it was new this car was desired by gigantic amount of people. In 2019 the alternative car from MB is not as desirable world wide as w123 once was
During these good old days of Daimler Benz engineers were heading the company, therefore world class cars as the W 123,W 116,R/C 107... were the outcome.Great cars always with the demand to be the technological leader for many years !
I owed and drove this car from when it was 34 to 39 years old and put over 60k miles on it. The car was built like a tank and drove like one too. And people would always comment on this car. Never a bad comment even though the car had been well used like a . . . . 4cy no turbo but went up and down mountains and through the valley's. Would have kept mine if the previous owner didn't rip it apart.
My father has a 1983 240D, with 152,000km, and it works like new! No, it's not for sale! In my opinion, the last true Mercedes-benz which was manufactured.
It still smells like when it was bought(just a litle) in Muret, near Toulouse, France. He is 100% factory.
152.000 km:)))) my 240d is already 510.000 and the coupe 350.000.Your car is really new:)))
427,000 on mine ;)

Pff my 240D has 122000km... its the 72hp version from 1978.... great car
Dont ever sell it If they ever Ban diesel cars you can still run on vegetable oil with a few pump tunes.
The best car ever made and the new ones cant come close!!
The w123 was the last Merceces that was Mercedes, those that came later, are no longer Mercedes💪😄
Mercedes Benz does not build them like that anymore.
@ w212 is a piece of shit with shitty engines.
