- I wasted my time and money at these Penang tourist traps so that you don't have to.
The Clan Jetties of Penang: Some old houses on wooden stilts next to the sea. They've almost all been turned into shops selling tourist tat. The Clan Jetties somehow has rating of 4.0 (out of 5) on Google Maps. That just shows you how easily pleased the average tourist is. Buying tacky souvenirs and taking cringy Instagram photos makes for a such a wonderful touristy time, apparently.
Fort Cornwallis: An old fort with nothing inside it except a few rusty old cannons and gift shop. Heavy construction is going on at 3 of the 4 sides and has huge sections of it closed off to the public. Foreigners pay double here! It's basically a scam that are allowing people to pay full price for a ticket without mentioning the heavy construction and closed off areas first. I usually enjoy visiting old forts but this was my worst fort experience in any country.
Do yourself a favour by avoiding the popular tourist attractions in Penang and instead spend your time eating up all the delicious food that Penang is famous for. That's probably why you came to Penang in the first place.

This fort was the biggest disappointment for me while visiting any tourist spot. There was literally nothing. A room was labeled as the storage room for arms and ammunition and it was no way bigger than a washroom.

As a Penangites myself, I had never set foot in that fort and never will. RM20 was a bloody ripped off. Even RM10 for locals is too much. Last time, it was just RM2. Fort Jaffna in Sri Lanka is way 100 times bigger than this Cornwallis and it's free entry... 🤬

Hi Dale! My advice, rent a car and go for a road trip. Malaysia is so much more than only KL, Penang, Melaka (too touristy). I think you would love the quaint little village with beautiful paddy fields in the States of Kedah, experience boathouse life while visiting the aboriginal tribe in Kenyir lake in Terengganu. You can stop wherever you want and experience the culture, the people and discover the beautiful nature Malaysia got to offer. Btw, your evil laugh (when you're thinking to push that girl with elephant pants) is hilarious! You're now my fav vlogger! Can't wait for the next video!

Hey Dale, as a Penangite neither would I waste my money to enter Fort Cornwallis. I'd rather be wandering through the streets, looking for food.
Also, the jetty piers have a different view at night. There's no need to buy souvenirs there either because you can get better stuffs elsewhere.

I have been to Penang, not an interesting place. Dale, I feel sorry for you, this people just think of making money. It seems that the ministers in Penang don't bother to do something to make the tourist attraction a better place. Corrupted ministers.

Why would they run the business when there is a construction happening ? As a Malaysian. I would be disappointed too if I had to pay even RM10 for these kind of tourist spot. Its not worth at all 🤦🏻♂️

It's tat and shite for sure, actually, here is what i wrote in a blog at the time of my visit:
A short distance later we got out at the Chinese jettys, where each jetty is dedicated to a certain family name and only those with that name may reside here. This one with its rickety homes and narrow lanes gave a real sense of going back in time, until you came across the most concentrated bulk of tat shops ever. For a Unesco World heritage sight i am amazed this is allowed.
Great video though for those wanting to visit.

Penang has two things in my view, the food and the old colonial town in the middle, the rest, waste of time, including your favourite Fort Cornwallis 😂😂😂🙏

Hello! DP, you need to study history of the places before you visit them. Those houses along the sea side on stilts belong to fishermen and these place is known as fishing village. I'm sure you can find such in many developed countries too.
He does study the areas he visits. He also likes to learn from the locals as well. Dale’s knowledge doesn’t just come from looking things up, his interactions with those who live there teaches him as well.

Not just for a hike. There's a tons of places for visit in our place. Climb the mount Kinabalu. Hike around the Tawau Hill Park which includes a waterfall, river, flying fox and etc. Then there's one of the greatest wonder of the world, Maliau Basin. Also, Semporna for the dive, snorkel and amazing island! Kundasang for DESA dairy farm, cowboy town, flower garden, Sabah Tea Farm. Travel your land before travel to other's 🙌

There's a medieval castle in my town Kuressaare, Estonia, and the park surrounding it is totally free for anyone, only entering the castle with a fancy museum costs you a quid, which is reasonable compared to that 3 quids spent on looking at construction sites.
You went to those horrible jetties and didnt comment on the bad smell. It smelt like sewage/poo and we had to quickly leave as we started to feel sick. Nobody else seemed to notice and people were happily buying food!

In the center of the capital city in Indonesia there is a town called "Kota Tua" there you can see the Dutch VOC in Indonesia. Its better than Cournalis in Penang. You should go to Jakarta one day.
If you are into historical buildings and architecture, Malacca suits your preference. Standhurst and a few Portuguese cathedrals that stood on St Paul Hill would be spendid to visit. And from Malacca, make your way to Rawa Island. The clear water and pristine whine beach is breathtaking!

Visit Bengkulu in Indonesia, they have cooler fort named Fort Marlborough built by British (Indonesia mostly invaded by Dutch, British stayed for a very little amount of time, so having british history spot is rare in Indonesia), beside of the fort you can also visit the longest shoreline in Indonesia called Pantai Panjang

I am a local who have been leave in penang for 3 years. Fort currently total closed for total renovation. Instead of wasting rm20 for Fort, i suggest to invest rm20 in War Museum located in Batu Maung, Penang. The military fortress build by british to counter japanese invasion during world war ii. But beware. This museum was very creepy. National Geographic used to documented this museum and labeled the museum as the most haunted museum in asia.

For different experiences, come and visit Kedah and Perlis , 2 states upnorth of Malaysia....You can take ferry ride to legendary Langkawi Island that i think will be great content for your Vlog... From Langkawi, you can even cross the border to Koh Lipe island, Hatyai and take bus ride to Krabi...Anyway, good job, you are a very honest awesome vlogger ....Thumbs up man !

the ugly construction beside fort conwallis is actually USM ARCHAEOLOGY DIG SITE and they are doing archaeological investigation and excavation and have unearthed some amazing finds

Dale, i went to Penang in 2013. I planned my own tourist program.. you can go to the Flea Market. you must take a bus from the central terminal. There are many Antique goods.. I bought many antique goods at the flea market.. it opens at noon.. also, you can go to the old british church... i also go to the Jewish Cemetary...
