Never knew 96 was the only one with color matched between the corner markers. I put CF vinyl on my 96 to make it look like 1 lens that wraps the corner. Good video!

Cool stuff, I bought a 1990 ZR-1 last year that had been sitting for several years.So I had a lot to do getting her going, I'm learning everything about this car, like the rear hatch releases, one in console and on the back of the door panels. Very nice machine you have, thanks for posting. 👍👍🏁🏁

I adore C4 Corvettes. Don’t own one myself(or any Corvette for that matter) yet, but much to my surprise I didn’t realize that a lot of these different details between earlier and later model years aren’t noticed often
Hey Jon, thanks for the comments👍. There is quite a bit of lore and detail about Corvettes that the fans obsess over. Its all in good fun, just makes it interesting even if you don't have one in the garage. You wouldn't believe the amount of detail and trivia surrounding the vintage Corvettes of the 50's and 60's. You can really get in the weeds with those.

Some interesting details I never realized. I have a 94 LT1 I converted to a 95' ZF 6 speed and Dana 44 (3:45 gears). I don't recommend doing this it was a big pita. Mine has the proper Grand Sport stripe on torch red paint, with fender flares, chrome emblems, chrome A-mold wheels, and the big tires. So much fun to drive. C4's are awesome! Thanks for the video.

Those plastic Wagner sealed HLs were to save weight to put less strain on the nylon gears in the actuators...i made the mistake of "upgrading" to Sylvania HLs that were glass and in short order had to replace the actuators, though, they do sell brass gears so they can be rebuilt.
Very cool. I wasn't sure why they went to the plastic housings, but that makes sense. The problem with the brass gears is that they will destroy the plastic drive gear pellets over time. These headlight motors were definitely finicky pieces and had to almost have the perfect weight and balance to last long term.
Yeah my 96 auto has the Mobil 1 sticker as well but the hood may have been replaced at some point. Thanks for all the facts, I had no idea about most of the differences you explained. Great Video!
No problem, glad to share the trivia. Hood changes are pretty common with the C4's due to the size of the hood and difficulty in properly hiding repaired damage. Easier for the insurance company/body shop to buy another undamaged than hope a repair holds up over time.
My 96 auto also has the Mobil 1 hood sticker...

Nice video in such tight quarters. My 96 LT-4 has the Mobil 1 logo by the front. One of the previous owners could have put it on. It also has grand sport rear fender flares with the larger zr1 size wheels, and a grand sport badge in place of the collector edition badge on the front fenders. They all make the car look unique and cool.it’s pretty much a silver grand sport.
Army, thanks for adding the information. It seems after doing an informal survey in the comments section the Mobil 1 labels were used at the beginning of production until supplies were exhausted.

The 90-93 interior is interchangeable with 94 -96, I know because I changed put most of the 94 -96 interior in my 91 coupe, and mostly due to the white lettering that looked right with the white body. However, some interchangeability will depend upon specific options, as sometimes a few dummy lights won't work. Not only have I done this to mine, but to several others where I could mix & match most of the stuff, from dash pads, vents, gauges, switches, seats door panels, climate controls, etc etc. The radio /climate control bezels aren't interchangeable between these groups, unless you are changing the main dash pad, or even complete dash assembly
David, thanks for sharing. Just shows that where there's a will there's a way. Customization is always a cool part of the car hobby and I enjoy seeing what people come up with for their cars. Earlier this week I saw a 69 Charger that had a 2018 Hellcat drive train and interior grafted into it. Very cool👍

I think many (if not most) stock digital radios will increase volume when your car speeds up. It's certainly in my plain-vanilla 2019 KIA.
Definitely, nowadays it's a common feature adapted for every car on the road. Back in the early 90's it was considered cutting edge and a premium upgrade. Funny how times change.

My 96 has the mobile 1 plaque under the hood.. guess I’m special lol and it’s all original as far as I know.
Seems like it must have been a popular add on. You're the second one that has commented with a 96 that has it installed.
@@VetteSource all C4 Corvettes from 1992 thru 1996 had the plaque on the underside of the engine(from the factory). It was as if the LT1 and Mobil1 were truly meant for each other.
Gene, thanks for the input. After posting the video I had several comments like yours from owners that had the Mobil 1 emblem on their 96 hood.
Since I have known my 96 LT4 since it arrived at the dealership on the transport truck, I knew that it never had the emblem, so I figured they had left it off all the 96's.
However I acquired an early production (one of the first 2000 cars built) 96 LT4 yesterday, and there was the Mobil 1 emblem on the hood. After doing some research last night, it appears the early 96's must have had the emblem installed.
The earliest car I found without the emblem was in the low 4000 VIN range. I am going to keep looking for VIN's in the 3000 range and see what I find. Will keep you updated if you have an interest.
@@VetteSource My '96 convertible in LT1 guise was built at the end of 1995 with the last four of the vin number below 0700, and it has the Mobil1 plaque. It would be totally interesting to know the back story for sure. Thanks for the response.
Ironically, just this last week I was trying yet again to figure out if there's a "Balance" (Left/Right) control on the BOSE GOLD stereo and came upon the SCV 'knob' (again) and spent at least a minute wondering what the heck it was for, thanks for solving the mystery for me. Hey, uh, btw, any chance there's a humorous story behind the big 'dent' in the drywall in the wall next to your C4? lol

I was wondering when somebody would ask about the busted drywall. It's a funny storey actually. I had my 69 Corvette on the wheel dollies and was trying to be smart and move it sideways in the garage to have more free space to work on it. When I leaned against the wall, my ass broke through the drywall right between the two studs. I had to tell my wife to quit feeding me so well🤣🤣.

I have been selling new GM cars for 7 years and SCV is now called “Auto Volume”. It is adjustable through the digital radio of the new cars.

Great trivia. But a quick question. When you were talking about the ECM, you said on yours it has an ALDL connector. Wasn't the 96 equipped with an OBD2 port?
It is an OBDII port, but in the field we use AlDL/OBDIi terminology interchangeably.
Anyone know if the later oval shaped tail light "Bumper" will fit on an earlier 1989? They are much better looking than the earlier style. Nice video thanks for the info..
No problem, glad to do it👍. The later bumper will fit, however the belt line trim will be different so you will need to update the rest of the trim on the car with the newer 91-96 style trim.
My 1986 C4 has glass under hood light lenses. I believe they switched to glass starting in 1986 whereby 1984-1985 had the plastic lenses
Yea, I have gotten quite a bit of feedback regarding glass lenses on early cars. I need to double check my mid 80's GM parts book to see if I can definitely I'd when the change occured. Thanks for the feedback👍.

When I take the gas cap off my 1991 C4 Corvette air comes out is there supposed to be much air pressure in the fuel tank
The escaping air is a normal occurrence in these older systems before they moved to the new systems with the built-in vapor recovery
I never heard about the GS Verts that got out with the flares. That would look strange with 285 tires.
Yep, it's something I heard from a GM dealer rep back when I was selling them new. IIRC, he said they put them on the first 7 or so convertibles, and decided they didn't like the look of them so they quit installing them going forward. I have never been able to find one of those first built convertibles to see for myself, but the story always intrigued me.

If you don't mind me asking. What brand were the seals for the a and b pillar? The ones I purchased are to hard and leak worse than the original.
Unfortunately I'm not sure who the original OEM manufacturer/supplier to GM was and it may be something that is difficult to figure out after so many years.
You are correct though, the aftermarket units are very inferior in comparison to the late C4 factory installed pieces. At least having something to replace the worn originals is better than nothing, but its still no fun when they leak so bad.
Chrysler started putting the map pockets into the door trims inot the Imperials in the 1950s.

The '96 has more gauge choices to cycle through in the LED window than a '94. I don't know about '95? My friend had a '96 Silver Collector Edition and I had a '94 Coupe and we noticed that side by side cycling through our dashes. I don't remember what the choice was "Trans Temp" or something like that etc. because I sold my C4 3 years ago.

i have a 1989 c4 . weather striping looks good. What do you recommend to apply to it for preservation?
I recommend applying dielectric grease to the weatherstripping once or twice a year depending on the cars use. It isn't petroleum based and won't cause long term damage to the foam/rubber👍.

93 certainly has glass under-hood work lights, and my 93 also has no Bowling Green or Mobil 1 plate either, which may be something Callaway removed, but there is no evidence they were ever there. My 94 had the Mobil 1 label there.
I think I remember noticing that the Callaway cars had the Mobil 1 sticker removed, maybe it had something to do with them using a different type of oil in the Callawy builds.

95 Monte Carlo had speed compensating volume.
Yep, quite a few of the higher end GM cars received them during those mid 90's model years. I remember detailing them for customers when they would come in to look at the Monte Carlos and Impala. Thanks for the comment👍

My '91 ZR1 had plastic Wagner headlights, but I changed them out for Sylvania Silver Stars.
Depending on the production date some 95 have the front bumper colored between the lights

Ok, gotcha. It's mounted right above the battery on the frame to cowl support. You'll see the vacuum lines coming out of the backside of the assembly, along with the throttle cable running back to the ASR unit.

Plastic headlights on 94 also. My 94, which I bought new had them too
Interesting. I have been getting some feedback that they did seem to appear on some of the earlier cars, but not consistently. I wonder if it was the supplier beginning to phase them in. Personally I have never run across any of them on the 94 and 95 cars I have dismantled for parts over the years.

My 88 has the glass under hood light lenses also
Hey Mike, good morning. I have seen some of the earlier cars with the glass lenses. I think that GM stopped producing the plastic lenses due to them melting, and began offering only the glass lenses for replacement. It may be that 88 was the first year they were installed on the assembly line. Thanks for the info👍
Hmmmm... My 96 has the Mobile 1 emblem up there. Mine must be aftermarket; as I feel it is far more likely that someone added that sticker to mine than peeled it off yours lol.
Yep, definitely possible. Corvette enthusiasts like to add emblems or other such markers to personalize their cars. Of course, it's also possible you have an earlier hood on your car. Easy way to check is look at the inner fender wells on the hood. If they are riveted in place, that is definitely a 96 hood. The earlier hoods have them bolted in with T30 torx fasteners like the lower inner fenders.
Mine has the sticker 100% stock but may have been dealer installed during prep.
@@paulmoss7940 I think what we have learned about these stickers so far is that early 96 c4's had the stickers... then they ran out about halfway through the run and just stopped putting them on.
@@michaelthebarbarian3380 I'm thinking mine is late like sept. or oct. I will have to check, originally sold in NC. In the factory literature there is a brochure about using only Mobil1 . There is also a factory tape that has been published on YT by another LT4 owner. Jeff Gordon does some commentary on it.
If you don't mind sharing the last 5 digits of your VIN I can compare it to the others I have researched to get closer to figuring out when they stopped installing them.

Well, the plot thickens, thanks for the input. I am going to have to go out and take a look at the 86 convertible project car I have sitting in storage and see what's on there. Looks like they may have put those glass lights in there much earlier than I thought.

Yep, after 34 years there are quite a few variables that can happen with parts that were installed on cars originally.

Yep, 85's are great C4's, first year of the TPI, and with the 4 speed and Z51 quite fun cars to cruise on a regular basis.
I have a 85 L98 not stock anymore it’s getting modifying same Engine automatic. I just did the interior in the new cluster I am putting headers and The borla exhaust for now

Technically you are incorrect about the painted area in front of the car between the turn signal in the side marker light is that the first time that came out body color is 95 pace car check it out

Thanks for the comment. You are correct, all of the 95's should have it. After doing some further research this week, it looks like they stopped putting the Mobil 1 emblems between VN#'s 3500-4200 in 1996. I just acquired an early build (21st day) Aqua Metallic 1996 LT4 and was surprised to see the Mobil 1 sticker under the hood.

@@VetteSource very cool! I saw an aqua one driving here in Abilene, Tx the other day. I was in the family ride and wasn't able to turn around to talk to him.
They're definitely rare to come across in the wild. Most of the time you will see them on display in the car shows and cruise is. Good to see people are still using them.

That's cool, never would have thought of that even though it makes perfect sense. It first appeared on the 1990 Corvettes equipped with the Delco Bose Gold CD player, so it was an often overlooked option that many never noticed, much less used.

There will be a white label in the driverside door jamb that lists the date of production. Also take a look at the last five digits of the VIN. That will be the build number of your car. There were a little over 20,000 Corvettes built that year, so you can tell how early or late it was produced by that number.
@@VetteSource Thank you! I checked at it notes mfd by 08/94 and the last 5 are 01578. I think it was one of the earlier ones.

Yep, it's an unfortunate side effect of CZcams. However, I also have lots of great conversations with like minded enthusiasts to compensate for it.

I’ll stick with my ears n fingers to adjust my car audio. So I pulled that crappy stock junk out years ago (all of it) heard it when I first bought it and just knew that it was coming out A.S.A.P. Now I’ll never go back till I sell her then they can have all the stock crap. Cassette was junk cds sounded like shit and electronic peeping bussing shit when u turned the volume up n down. MAN what more can I say about stock (NOT MUCH). ALPINE BABY ALL THE WAY( NO ) TURNIN BACK.
Hey Mark, lots of guys like the premium aftermarket units. I'm a fan of Kenwood myself. However, it sounds like you were never able to hear your Bose Gold system when it was functioning properly. They're very impressive, and surprise many people when they find out it's a "stock" system. Thanks for the comments👍.
@@VetteSource when I was using it for the short time Before I pulled it out. I always set fade to the front speakers and let the rears take the bass. But now I have bass up the booty that stock can’t compare to in a million years. Lows and mid punch so I’m good.
Yep, for certain kinds of music the aftermarket systems are what you need for sure.

Agreed, the old school Kenwood from the early 90's is still kicking in my 1991 Firebird Formula 350 to this day, CD player and all.
