- Fishing this high altitude lake on the side of a mountain blew my mind! We catch some beautiful fish and see some incredible views, fishing doesn't get much better than this! It definitely wasn't easy getting up there, with my fitness anyway! I hope you enjoy the video especially considering how much effort it took me to get up there. I absolutely love trout fishing, and in this video we do some lure fishing for trout and fly fishing for trout. Wild brown trout fishing at it's finest!

There are records of one Victorian landowner who stocked high altitude lochs and lochans on his estate in Scotland by having pony panniers (baskets which sit either side of the pony’s withers) lined with linen bags, which themselves were coated with pitch, then filled with stream water, and then the fingerling trout which had been bred in captivity were put into these ‘portable goldfish bags’ and transported to their end destinations by the pony and ghillie.

Years ago in the states people would load pack horses/mules with big milk cans filled with trout and stock lakes and streams high up in the wilderness .

Great video. I love any picturesque videos, especially fishing ones!! You mentioned your back taking the strain in the video. I'm a sports physio and have some little bits that would make it easier. 1) Get your rucksack higher up on your back, not hanging down low. Also, the heaviest items should be at the top with the rucksack filled equally from left to right. 2) Like a lot of injuries, things go 'eek/ bang/ crack" through overuse. So some basic exercises for your quads and core will help no end. Getting fit for fishing hahaha. Who'd have thought it, but joking aside it;ll allow you to keep making more vids. ATB, Chris. :)
Thanks for the advice, I tend to get a lot of pain behind my left shoulder blade towards the middle i think it’s probably caused by lots of casting with a bag on. Weight distribution isn’t something I’d considered so thanks for the pointer!
Nice video, and Thank you for posting. Reminds me when a couple of friends and i hiked a little over 8 miles to fish Horton lake in the Sierra Nevada U.S. The elevation was around 11,000 ' and the trout had small bodies but big normal sized heads, due to main diet being mosquito's . I was an inexperienced hiker, and i packed way too much weight going up, but the suffering was all worth it.
That sounds like a really cool trip. Even our highest altitude lakes in the UK are about a third of the elevation of that. I'd love to fish the US!

Yes, the lake is a glacial tarn, the remnant basin left behind when a glacier has retreated up the valley. The steep wall at the back of the tarn is called a bergschrund or backwall. It’s where the ice cuts almost vertically along with great height of the ice and snow. It’s not a moraine as someone else suggested which is somewhere down the valley - a heap of boulders that were carried down the valley and dumped there when the glacier melted. Fascinating stuff glaciers.

Great video George pal what a beautiful location 👍🏼😁 that 2nd trout was absolutely stunning the colour were amazing I’ve never seen those colours on any trout 🤷🏼♂️ the black & red spots with that greenish body was just delightful I was out again tonight with my wee Brother we both caught a sea trout each him on the fly & mines on a Mepps so I’ve still not caught on the fly rod but the conditions on the local rivers are so bad very low & clear 🤦🏼♂️ we need rain so badly I’ve got my casting quite good I’ve had 2/3 flies over the same rising fish but it wouldn’t take I need more flies maybe smaller than the few I have I think most are 14’s so some 16 & 18’s are a must also when I tie my fly on I’m forever getting kinks in the line which clearly messes up the presentation 🤷🏼♂️ I’ll get there though just have to keep at it & take as much advice as I can get.

Proper real wild fishing. I was going to call it a tarn before you did in the video. Those olive green coloured trout are my favourite and have caught some like that in the Scottish highlands but never fished a tarn, though we have many.

Great video mate and a lovely spot, one of my favourite in the lakes. Not sure if you know already but I'm fairly certain that that tarn is the only tarn with artic char living within it, they're left over from the last glacial maximum. Would've been great to see you catch one of them

I am from Calfornia and we catch Rainbow Trout, which are beautiful also. I have never caught a Brown Trout, my dad did once, a 14 1/2" at Yellowstone National Park, (had to be over 14" to keep). I watch 3 of your videos, "The River has never been fished...," the video, "Fishing under a Mountain Waterfall," and this video. All three have Beautiful scenery. Though you caught smaller Brown Trout in this video, they were magnificently beautiful, so much red in them!

We have rainbow trout here too but they're mostly stocked, with only one none-native breeding wild population. Yeah i've found brown trout in the mountains always seem to be so vividly coloured!

Beautiful location and fish mate. If you get chance, get yourself over to New Zealand. I never fished for trout back home, but when I moved here, there wasn't the traditional coarse fisheries I was used to, so I started trout fishing. I've tried a couple of places that seemed fairly devoid of life! I'd be very happy to take a recommendation though if you had one! I love north wales, but have only really sea fished there
@@adventurefishinguk Sea fishing is where I'm from but Lleyn Geirionydd is a good trout lake with a mixture of (brown) trout introduced for various reasons so their colours are considered the most beautiful. I caught a 3/4lb one with red, black and yellow spots, yellow perfect fins, white underbelly. Interestingly, the lake is thought to be dead which keeps everyone away but there is serious tonnage of trout in there. Big eels, too. Only locals tend to know about this...

A tarn is a small circular lake formed by a glacier
An old northern english word derived from old Norse ( Tjorn) meaning a small mountain lake with no tributaries.
Good knowledge! Another term for it is a Corrie lake, I remember that from GCSE geography 👍
Red Tarn has a tributary which flows down into Ulswater
Great to see someone do this, nicely filmed. I always look at those kinds of lakes and think I'd love to fish them as they look so pretty, even if they hold underwhelmingly small browns mainly. Nifty little rod and reels set up. Personally I'm a dedicated trout spin guy, dislike fly immensely. One of my Tenryu, Samurai or Gloomis rods and one or two of several Daiwas 1000's or recent Shimano Stella is what I'd bring. I'd generally have range of lures from Rapala minnows, Celtas, Tassie Devils to cover streams to lakes. Would be hard cutting down on gear to do a hike like that, always feel like I didn't bring enough of a selection.

@@adventurefishinguk Good point. I've got quite a few spoons in part of my trout lure collection, spanning 5 plano cases. I'm normally fishing a river on my farm so they don't really come into play vs other lures. Haven't done much with them in the stocked dams and larger lakes here in Australia either really as Tassie Devils seem to dominate with larger trout.

Nice vid. Fly fishing suggestions if i may.
1. Fish the fly first to avoid spooking too many fish
2. If you get a follow don't be afraid to pause for a good few seconds then start retrieve again. They often come back
3. Vary the retrieve speed including very small sharp snatches
4. If you're getting lots of follows but no takes rotate through flies quickly
5. Always try dry fly first to a rising fish. No need to retrieve if the cast is good
6. You need to be stealthier around bank than lure fishing. Dark clothes.
7. Polarised glasses
8. Flies with frills and legs always good when you can't tell what they're feeding on
9. Leader least as long as rod

Good advice - I quite often use daddy long legs or caddis - easy to see, nice big mouthful (that is not matching the hatch but is a temptation for the fish to grab a big mouthful) and on rivers if you can't mend your line well, both chub and trout are used to things like caddis skittering on the surface and, because of the size, fish don't just sip but do a decisive take.

Brillant video George. Looks like the water was very clear all the hill (lochs in scotland 😂) have a peaty tinge near me so visibility isnt great. Montana nymphs seem to do well as they resemble a tadpole or larva. Shame you never got one on the fly joining the club with me in regards to catch on the fly atm 😂.

barbless isnt good for some species or styles of fishing the deep penertrate where as barbed hooks dont go as deep as the barb prevents this from happening
Nice brownies - they are fun to catch. Was just up in the San Juan national forest in southern Colorado and at 10830 and was catching brookies on dry flies and it was 39F. It was great and got some pics of them.

50 years ago I fished a tiny Scottish lake in the middle of a pine forest. I only caught one 6 inch trout and although it had brown trout markings it was almost as green as a tench!

Hey...nice video and intro to that bit of kit. As a mountain fly fisher I can certainly appreciate it.
You cast better than a beginner, so definitely put a longer leader on! Or they'll get spooked. Also, try doing all your false casts to the side rather than to the same spot you're looking to cast.
Or each false cast can also spook the trout 👍

Thanks for the stunning scenery - you reminded me how much that part of the world is an absolute wonder. The geomorphologic feature that 'hosts' the tarn is called a cirque - created by the last glacial phase to affect planet Earth. There's a nice one on the side of Snowdon.

Bro what an absolute amazing place🔥 I've never tried fly fishing, it looks fun, the closest thing I do is I love using fly jigs for pike, the way they dance in the water is just mesmerising and pike love it too! I would love to do something like that, it's a nice adventure and makes you appreciate any catch after suck a long hike! Keep it going bro🤜🏼🤛🏼

Lovely spot. I camped with my wife next to that tarn and swam across it's cold water back in 2002. Also got exhausted going up to that same peak. I've caught Arctic charr in very similar little corrie loughs in Ireland. Wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility..

@@adventurefishinguk Hi there, they are very difficult to catch on rod and line. You would love the little Lough Callee below Carauntoohil, Irelands highest point. We discovered charr there back around 2010. Also contains beautiful little brownies. Another of my favourites is Coomasaharn and Coomaglaslaw, which contain the most beautifully patterned char I've seen. Also home to some enormous Ferrox trout. You would love it over there!

Really cool setup. Something to try with the fly, flip your wrist and let the line take the fly out that way. That is called a roll cast and does not require to height to get it going like you generally see. The little native brown trout that you caught were so pretty, something about the native fish that makes them just a bit more special. Here in the US there are many areas where the native trout population is supported by farm raised and released trout. The farm raised trout are kinda robotic. To get away from them, you have to do exactly what you did, hike up into the mountains and find ponds in the remote waters and often in the Western US the trout species you can find are numerous, many are unique to the water you made be fishing in. I’ve caught many brookies. They are in my opinion the prettiest trout I’ve caught especially during spawning. Just beautiful.
They don’t grow as fast as the other types. Mostly wild ones and are a great way to spend a day.

I did something similar in Colorado years ago w a friend, found a series of beaver ponds 5 miles from the nearest road and caught native trout on every cast it seemed. Kept 2 for dinner, threw the rest back, camped out and hiked out the next morning, wish I could wash rinse repeat that day.

Haha yeah I wouldn’t say no to a helicopter ride up to one! I’ve seen Scotland looks absolutely full of mountain lochs, hopefully I get the chance to explore some of them!

Try Panther Martin, Melos. Also try a small piece of cut shrimp. Sounds crazy, but Trout love Shrimp

@AdventureFishingUK Yes, but in the late 90's. Last time I hiked up there was 2016 on a return visit to Wales. Didn't really look for long due to the company I was with. Out in Colorado where I live now we've got tons of high alpine lakes that are full of trout and char (brook trout and lake trout), plus the native cutthroat. Keep up the great videos! I miss the fishing adventures of my youth in Wales! Kinda miss the rain too 🤗

@AdventureFishingUK Hit me up! I'm in Fort Collins north of Denver and 10mins from Poudre Canyon, excellent wild trout water with big Browns. When you head west up Hwy14 there's a lake called Chambers, that's where we Lake Trout fish after ice off. Big big fish lurk in there. Lots of wildlife in that area. We had our 1st wolf sighting back in May 😳 State Forest State Park has multiple high alpine lakes, one of which just got stocked with California Golden Trout. But they are tiny right now. When are you thinking of heading over to the US?
Also.....look up the Lahontan Cutthroat. They get very very big! Pyramid Lake in Nevada has some absolute behemoths 🤩

That was a great watch and what a beautiful place. I'm curious about the pathway you took. It almost looked as though it had been laid in antiquity and had fallen into disrepair. Would love to know if it was natural or not. It did seem to be a tremendous amount of effort for such an isolated place but, there seemed to be less rock on either side of the path and, who knows what could have been a well used walkway between settlements when people walked everywhere. Loved the rod you used too what a clever piece of kit. It really is extraordinary that fish can end up somewhere that seems disconnected from any river or stream. Those wee trout were so cute and their markings were so pretty. Nothing like the mouse eating monster brown trout we get in mice/mast years here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand. Average size 4lb (almost 2kg) BUT the world record brown trout weighed 44 pounds, 5 ounces (20kg). I can't imagine trying to land that! 😳 BBC Earth have done a couple of cool videos on them but, it must be seriously disconcerting to open a fish and find 13 or so mice inside.
PS: I did chuckle when you said that people may not know what a tarn is and then proceeded not to say. At that point, l realised that apart from it being a body of water, l wasn't entirely sure what it was either. Google came to the rescue - a mountain lake, pond or pool, formed in a cirque excavated by a glacier. A moraine may form a natural dam below a tarn.
Thanks for watching! I believe the national trust probably put the path there, all over this area is popular for hiking and these stone paths help prevent footpath erosion into the landscape. I wish we had some wild trout the size they get in newzealand, but i'm also very happy catching tint ones from places like this!
@@adventurefishinguk Thanks for the info on the path. Stone makes great sense. Quite right that it's absolutely not all about the size of the fish. The location and the experience is a huge part too, and where you were is an absolutely gorgeous spot! It looked like a fantastic day out. It was more that l'm amused and amazed that our trout get so big beause they've learned to eat mice. Apparently, so they don't get injured by the teeth or claws, they knock them out with a tail slap and eat them when they drown, which IMO is pretty clever stuff from a fish. 😊
@@nikiTricoteuse That's really clever, we actually have some places in the UK where trout eat mice, normally in very urban locations. Those kinds of fish regularly get to 3kg
@@adventurefishinguk Yeah, makes sense that a smart fish would adapt to eating a readily available protein source. l was pretty stunned when l saw it. I only learned about the mice cos l was in a sporting goods store in a wee town on the West Coast and on the counter there were photos of some of the trout and the mice they ate. They also sold mouse shaped lures (?) made out of possum fur. Two pests for the price of one. 😊
