Fr. William, a priest in a local Irish Catholic church, is hearing confession one Sunday when Michael, an old parishioner, enters his booth, with some news: Michael has lung cancer and is facing a terminal diagnosis. Michael also has other revelations: one involving William himself, the role he played in the breakdown of Michael's marriage -- and the devastating consequences of that breakdown.
Now William must try to convince Michael to keep the truth under wraps -- and grapple with his own moral dilemma as he is torn between his duty to offer God's forgiveness and his own emotions and reactions.
Writer-director Paul Horan's powerful, intimate drama interrogates the role that religion, and its human intermediaries, plays in human lives, questioning just what gives them the moral authority to dispense wisdom when they themselves are fallible. It's also about the balance between social roles and personal choices, and the unexpected yet momentous impact that we can have upon one another.
The narrative is essentially a two-hander where the main characters are confined to a confessional booth, and its fulcrum involves a powerful secret strong enough to question the self-conception of its main character, not to mention up-end his life if the secret should get out.
The performances and writing dictate the aesthetic approach of the film, which uses nimble editing and well-composed shots that capture both words and reactions. Viewers will be hard-pressed to notice the visual limitations of setting -- and indeed, the close quarters emphasizes both the intimate conflict between the two, as well as their separateness from one another.
Though relatively small in scale, the film is able to achieve a masterful dynamism, thanks to excellently crafted writing, which is brought to life by terrific performances that grapple with both the sensitive emotional dilemmas of the characters and the weighty subjects of morality, ethics and self-scrutiny. The storytelling lays out beautifully calibrated and paced emotional beats that subtly form the groundwork for an eventual powerful detonation.
Actors Phelim Drew and Francis Magee play the priest and his supplicant respectively, both offering performances that achieve subtle yet rich character arcs over the film's fifteen minutes. Michael's secrets are laid bare, and their personal impact upon Fr. William form the backbone of a story that shakes him out of what can be seen as his moral complacency. He is forced to reckon and account for his own human mistakes and limitations, especially when its consequences are so potentially devastating.
BLESS ME FATHER is well-crafted, engaging and compelling, and it's also a prime example of the power of words as the basis of human drama. The dialogue is heightened here, but still with an ear towards social realism and psychological nuance. Words -- both spoken and unspoken -- have powerful consequences in the world of the film, and both William and Michael use their words to provoke, cajole, shame and wound one another. By the film's end, it's unclear who has won, perhaps -- but we understand that much has been lost, with such a resonant, devastating impact that it renders viewers as speechless as the priest himself. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

You can't compare something like Fast and furious or an action film to a drama short,
But if you compare 90% of the drama's in hollywood, they are jsut as good(and also set up the ground work for short films like this)
Then you have films like 1917-Literally filmed the entire thing to look like one continuous shot.
So i understand the Emotional argument "Hollywood is mainstream, and mainstream is bad", but its just that..an emotional argument not grounded in reality.

Hollywood has turned out many fine productions , mostly in the past,But for small budget , Independent or crowdfunded short films ,intelligently written scripts,that don't rely on 20 minutes of superhero destruction, CGI, Explosions and gore, I find they are as good or ,imo, better than much if what Hollywood has churned out lately.

The acting was so believable. Nowadays......that's rare. The old man is lonely. There are lots of them. It's sad how through life you keep "making your bed the same way" without realizing you got to lie in it everyday and you could've been happy....made others happy. But no.....this isn't realized until the end.....when you are cold and alone. Great story telling.
It's odd isn't it? How the young and the old while drifting apart every day have more in common in the way they live their lifes? How you may be young or old, at your prime or evening and yet in the end? It's all the same. Not to all of cause but to enough. What a lonely world a lot of us live in.

The guy playing the priest iss Phelim Drew...does alot of voicover work here. His dad was the famous Ronnie Drew...a great Irish trad band.

Excellent. I was raised Roman Catholic and joined another religion when I became an adult. I have often thought about those priests who must have heard so many awful stories. And in the end, they also are only human.

WOW Omeleto. I could never have imagined I'd be interested in such a plot until this. The story, acting and mood were all crafted perfectly. Giant accolades to everyone involved, especially those two actors - but everybody involved can feel rightly proud. This one is exceptional.
I'd recommend Alfred Hitchcock's "I Confess" and "Calvary" directed by John Michael McDonagh. Great films about a priest given a revelation in the confessional.
That lighting just adds another layer
That ladies and gentlemen is what a person is like when they don't love who they are and what they have become. It also stresses the importance of honest communicatio.
I an not an evangelist, Omoletto does not drive home the point, part of the the story is about forgiveness and accepting your own weakness, is it partly about redemption and also about guilt, does that make for a happy 'Hollywood' ending? 'Hell no', thankfully..
Most people are not in love with who they are...especially the old people. Any good person can die young and 'happy'. Try growing old and mistake free and 'happy. Life is about speaking truth. The man spoke the truth...albeit a bit later in life. And in reality every person wants to know who their parents are.
Reminded me of my native language. It has many words to describe objects and scenery, but it lumps up different feelings into very narrow vocabulary.
Even the poets of the olden days had to use sceneries to describe their feeling.

I love how their familiarity made the partition between then seem to disappear until they were just two old acquaintances sitting together, having a chat...
I dispense with the reconciliation screen for that reason. My parish also has a reconciliation room where the penitent is in the same room as the confessor. I can understand the desire for the anonymity of a screen, but boy howdy is there a connection face to face.

I am pretty new to Omeleto as well (a couple weeks or so. CZcams committed a kind act by putting this channel in my recommendations.). This channel is a big reason why I don't think I will ever have cable again. The content is far superior to what is on television (and to most of what is released in movie theaters).
I want to know more of this story. How does the Catholic priest deal with all that he knows? Does the sick guy tell his son the truth? Did the son always have a feeling that something was off, even though he appeared content on the surface? Did the priest sleep with the sick guy's wife? I could go on and on....

Asking for forgiveness for the khabib fight for tapping. Then the window slides open and he does a double take before saying "who the fook is that guy".
That first scene alone with the grandmother was enough to finish the movie.

@@rikuheagle7648 The priest didn't sleep with his wife, as far as I saw. He just drove a wedge between the couple by encouraging her belief that her husband was a sinful man and that was the reason she couldn't have children with him.

It was thinly veiled, she told the story of sleeping with the priests brothers wife to taunt him...in the end he did say "i babysat him, hes the closest thing i have to a son, dont take it away" if it was his nephew, it meant he slept with the brothers wife, and of course wouldnt affect him, only his brother, but if it was the other mans son, it wouldve meant the child would despise him for sleeping with his mother. In the beginning the other man also emphasise how much the woman came to church. Theres also the line "he grew up as a fine man without your guidance" this doesnt make sense for the brothers son because he knew it already, and would not sting as much as his own son. In the end the camera was still on the priest for a moment, he was contemplating his sins

This was Movie level storytelling. Even the few seconds of camera holding at the end told a world of story... Shorts like these with a low budget are absolutely rare.
It was amazingly done. Adversarial with moral dilemma. Btw, he completely forgot to cough after few minutes. Maybe cancer got cured.

This is extremely well well made. I would never think a cinematic short only located in the church with three charcters could be that much well made. From the expressions to the dialogue, this is a masterpiece!

I believe he was referring to the fact that every person would lose an eye to the people they wronged. All people have wronged more than one person, so I guess that would cause everyone’s eyes to be gone. Meaning everyone would be blind. That’s my interpretation

The rage and tenderness, the spite and the remorse, the human fallibility. God I loved this one.

Micheal is one of the best actors around, he is on a different level. He is so good it's absurd and needs to be working constantly. If he is not, then real talent in the industry is not appreciated.
Being raised like that in rural Ireland makes this whole thing hit so close to home. Not to mention he acting plot and everything else about this film is so amazing.

The definition of art. There are movies I have seen that isn't worth the ticket it was printed on and yet quality like this is free. I hope that this team are rewarded with another project that is as great as this with the recognition they deserve.

this might just be THE most intensive scene i have ever watched, i would compare it to the opening scene from inglorious bastards but even more gritty and real. perfect use of music and lack-off music
The scene from inglorious basterds was good because of the excellent tension buildup, Keeping the audience on their toes as to what will happen next.
Both are great in their own right
This is amazing because of its masterful play on emotions, and leaving the audience to speculate with the puzzle peices, making theories, and constructing their own ideas Before assembling it all together in seconds.
This is an absolute master class of dramatic acting and incredible story telling. In less then 20 minutes the creators of this actually got me to care and have legitimate interest in the lives of these two men
The writer is a genius ! And acting was really good enough to keep interested the whole time
This was incredible. I can't believe how well this was played out. I actually became immersed in this entire setting just through this one interaction between two characters.

There are so many layers going on here, the acting is absolutely top notch. You can see him being satisfied about getting back at the priest, then he feels the pain of what hurt it would cause his son, then the despair of his boy never knowing that he was the father and on and on. Bloody brilliant.
I love the films that don’t end on a cliffhanger or something that would be a small snippet of the whole story. Thank you for this gem Omeleto!

The boy deserves to know the truth about his real father. Let him react how he wants and choose who he wants as his dad.
What purpose would that serve? His father is the man that raised,who cares who his biological father is? It would devastate the boy and both of his parents ,it would destroy the whole family, and make them outcasts. If he cared about the boy at all,he wouldn't do it. He doesn't care about the boy having a chance to know his real father, the only reason he wants to reveal all this is to humiliate the priest.
Wow, that was really down to earth. So much more relatable than some of the other movies on this channel. Just 2 men, 1 talking openly about his problems and how it effects the other, and the other listening, but not silently.
This short has so much volume even though it’s set in a tiny confession booth. Amazing.

The plots and twists in many of these shorts kinda' makes one feel a bit deprived. These are so good that one always longs for a bigger story and a longer film. This one in particular was a super interesting and engaging story...so much so that I would love to see that back story and other characters. Why isn't this at least 2 hours and 20 minutes?!

I'm not sure about all what happened. Evidently the priest is some how tied into the sin that the bearded guy ( the man who confessed ) comitted which was an adulterous relationship. Can anyone explain to me how and how does the priest feel threatened in all this ? I'm a little confused. Thank you
@@mikekaroules2820 The priest is threatened because the love child of that adulterous relationship is his nephew (sort of). He thought he was his nephew but he really isn't because the kid is actually the son of the confessor, not the priest's brother, as had believed for 14 years! So, the priest feels threatened because the confessor is dying of cancer and wants to tell the truth before he dies. The priest believes the confessor's dying confession to the community would ruin the kid's life, so he feels threatened. So, he's basically trying to protect the boy from the harm the confessor's public declaration could do to the kid.

Now , actually should the confessor come out with this news - the young lad would not be the only one who might get devestated. It could wreak havok on that whole family , all 3 of them. What a mess.

The photography is like a Carrvaggio. As a practicing Catholic I accept our history is stained and ridden with horrors. This is a brilliant drama on so many levels.
Now that's a conversation from two very real people. Convincing acting. Incredibly amazing.

So well acted. The dilemma is believable. Life can be messy. This dilemma is also presented to the audience to reflect on. While understanding the trauma this would cause to the boy and his family, I can also understand the sick man’s point of view. Excellent short.

He should take responsibility for his life and not just blame it on the priest. I'm not even christian, but it's annoying to see someone blame another for his failed marriage.
What was it he did wrong in his marriage it seemed to me the wife was the problem and spent more time with the priest than her husband and the priest didn't help in the situation neither .
This is one of the best short videos I've seen in a long time. A gripping plot, great dialogue, and three actors who are so good you don't detect a bit of acting.
