    Darnell, most of that goop in the bottom is minerals. You can save some money and clean that with plain distilled white vinegar. Just soak it overnight (I don't think heat is necessary, but probbly won't hurt), then scrub gently, dump out and rinse.
    Give it a try and see if it's worth it. (Might even try with-heat vs without-heat to see what is the difference, if any.)
    Basically the acid in the cleaner dissolves those minerals, making it easy to remove. Vinegar has acetic acid, which is the acid found in apples (Granny Smith apples are higher in acetic acid than others. Makes sense?), which is why the apple-juice liver cleanse works so well.
    You could also use mild hydrochloric acid... but plain white vinegar is cheaper than dirt.

      I've tried 1 cup white vinegar + hot water to the fill line. Then let it run with the top off to boil for 30 minutes. It works OK for deep cleaning. There was some film on the bottom afterwards, but I was able to wipe it right off easy for the most part. The stuff the OEM includes works a little better, but isn't necessary. The vinegar + water works well enough if someone wants to go that route.

      @@WaveOvenRecipes Generally they're providing you with citric acid. If your "cleaner" is white granules then that's it. You can buy the same stuff for less than $20 for five pounds and it's food grade. Thats the stuff on the outside of really sour candy. I have used the citric acid and that's exactly what it is that came with my distiller. It is able to dissolve the deposits because of it's acidity, I'm not sure of the chemical mechanism, which is simple, but that's what you've almost certainly been using. I don't use vinegar because I don't like the smell anyway all that much and boiling it in a big cauldron like that is going to fill the air where you live with the smell of vinegar. The citric acid has no smell. By the way, I can't find the link to buy it through amazon so you get credit. I'm about to buy one of these so I'm puzzled about where your link is.

    I use a timer to cut the power off to the machine a few minutes early. This helps in a couple of ways - the machine doesn't need its temp. shutoff, so that doesn't wear out. And, it leaves some water in the vessel, so the impurities aren't baked on.

    • @Yukon33
      @Yukon33 Před rokem +6

      @@stefanallard3084 I do the same as John. I have the same model as shown in this video. I bought an electronic timer (BN-LINK) and run the distiller for 4 hours between 1 and 5 AM, in the basement. You connect the timer in the outlet, and plug the distiller in the timer (you can plug 2 devices on the model I mention).
      This 4 hour window leaves a couple cm of water at the bottom of the pot and it doesn't get caked hard. Dissolves with white vinegar... The distiller is already turned on when you plug it in, so the timer basically shuts off electricity all day except 1-5AM :)

    I have several water distillers, and this is one of them. A couple of things to note, I also try to turn my distillers off before they are totally empty since this reduces the build up on the bottom. Also, if you don't have any citric acid, there is a quick way to clean a distiller using vinegar. Fill the boiling pot with vinegar as high as the scale build up, then, with the lid off, plug it in and give it about 10 minutes to heat the vinegar. Now unplug the distiller and let it sit for about 30 minutes. At this point, take a paper towel and soak it in the hot vinegar and wipe the bottom and sides, once that is done, dump out the vinegar and rinse out the pot before distilling the next gallon.

    I am on my 6th Megahome Water Distiller. They claim to be Stainless Steel, but the Stainless Steel must be very thin, because it does not hold up, for me, any longer than about 8 mos, before the bottom of the tank becomes very tarnished, using it for one gallon a day. The inside of the top of the distiller has formed rust spots. We have very hard water here in Tempe, AZ, so I do NOT use Tap Water in it. I walk to the store and buy 6 one gallon bottles of "drinking water" at a time, $1.39 each and walk home, and distill one at a time. There is always sediment in the bottom after each gallon of so-called store bought "drinking water." Don't drink it!!
    My point is, I have been babying this current Megahome Distiller, since I have already gone through 5 of them, but, it is still tarnished and there are rust spots. I have only had this one about 16 to 18 months, one gallon a day. I have been thinking about getting another distiller, as I don't like the idea of drinking water from tarnished or rusted components, since I cannot see what is going on inside the tubes of the housing in the top compartment. I change the post charcoal filter often and clean the crap from the bottom of the tank when I can feel the sediment with my finger, but I just don't like the idea of rusted metal in the water. Hopefully the charcoal filter in the spout removes the unseen heavy metal nano-particulates, but how would I know. At this point, I only know what I can see. I have stainless steel cookware that is not rusted or tarnish on the bottom, so why can't they make the stainless steel of better quality in these distillers?

I had been using waterwise distiller for 3 years with no problems and it's still going strong, but not megahome. Another problem, beside the fact that it won't run is the quality of the stainless steel in the chamber. It has corroded. Not my waterwise distiller. The stainless steel is great. I should have paid more attention to the negative reviews. I want people to know how bad their customer service is and think twice before purchasing from them. Use distilled vinegar to clean the interior of the unit. This will also save you a buck or two. 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦

    Do you add minerals back into your drinking water? If I'm not mistaken, people shouldn't drink distilled water as it is missing those needed minerals.

      I did speak about that in the video.
      Dead water is better than poison water. Nothing from a tap is better than distilled, even minus minerals.

      There is a lot of hype made about minerals. Get your minerals from good natural food, and you will be fine.
