Artist city, country: Houston, Texas, U.S.A.
Artist Biography: Dorian Electra is a singer, songwriter, filmmaker, and visual artist, known for her unusual pop music videos on economics and philosophy of mind. She is the creator of PARTY MILK and is a former vocalist of the Chicago-based dreamwave band, Magicks.
In 2010, Dorian wrote a love song to a dead economist "I'm in Love With Friedrich Hayek" and the music video went viral reaching over 175,430 views. This video launched her career and landed her a Wikipedia Page. Although Dorian's work since 2013 has moved away from economics, she continues to let her intellectual interests inspire her work.

About The Video: "What Mary Didn't Know" is based on a famous philosophical thought experiment by philosopher Frank Jackson.
The story goes: There is a neuroscientist named Mary who studies color but has never seen color herself. She knows every scientific fact about how human eyes and brains perceive color. What happens when she steps out into the world of color for the first time? Does she learn anything new about what it's like to see color? Or did she know everything there was to know already?
This video has already become a cult classic in the philosophy of mind, being played in classrooms and at conferences.

    Song Lyrics: CHORUS:
    What Mary didn’t Know
    What Mary didn’t know
Didn’t know, she did not know
    She was a little girl
In a black and white world
    She didn’t know, didn’t know
Mary took a look inside of my head
Saw me looking at the color red
Saw how my eyes worked, how they linked to my brain
Yeah she could see it but was it the same?
    Mary’d never seen color herself
Just read descriptions in her books on the shelf
Thought she knew all about the ways that we see
But was it the same for me?
    CHORUS
    Mary sweet thing didn’t realize
The world around her yeah, with her own eyes
Was there more to sight than words could tell?
She could explain it very well
    CHORUS
One day Mary left her room behind
Opened her eyes and opened her mind
And she was shocked by the things that she saw
The world of color well it left her in awe
Mary, Mary with your jaw on the floor
Mary, Mary thought you knew it all, knew it all
    CHORUS
    (guitar solo)
    CHORUS

      No kidding...
I'd never heard of them until last night and I've watched all the newer songs a dozen times each.....
      Unbelievably creative music and videos....
This older stuff seems like garage rock in comparison....

@@yragnellaable I hear where you're coming from, but nobody just pops out of the womb fully formed, you know? We all have periods of learning to use our tools, learning about ourselves, our expression, finding our voice, etc. and Dorian was still hoppin' along that path.

Tbh I wish they would write more music about consciousness / philosophy of mind. I got to meet them at The Science of Consciousness conferences in 2014 and 2016 and they were loved by everyone. But sadly the one who organizes the conference wasn't a fan of Clitopia when it came out right around then and I guess Dorian felt somewhat alienated from our group after that, which is understandable.

this is five months late buuutttt,,, fun bit of music trivia; there’s actually an entire genre dedicated to this sound/aesthetic. it’s called ‘sixties revival’! it’s basically just heavily sixties-influenced stuff with a harsher garage rock spin. i’m guessing dorian electra & the electrodes were just a very short lived sixties revival group! :00

I thought it was a chaotic mess the first time I listened to their newer stuff too, but it's the kind of thing you have to ease into to really get it. I found daddy like and listened for the jokes, then flamboyant (which my little sister adores) and gradually listened to more and more of the songs until I was in love with the entire flamboyant album. I was already a fan by the time My Agenda fully dropped so it was super exciting and I genuinely enjoy every single song on that album. The message of each and every song is something that is really important to me. I hope you are able to enjoy their music just as much as me someday, I really recommend "Mind-Body Problem" as a song with less of the auto-tune that might be putting you off, it's very underrated.

    • @NIHIL_EGO
      @NIHIL_EGO Před 3 lety +3

@@bandamani I remember when I discovered them. It was 2 in the morning and I was watching CZcams stories. Then a weird video popped up, starting with a loud "D-D-D-DORIAN ELECTRA" and the face of a guy in blue, followed by an assortiment of random words and sounds. I had no idea has to what the fuck it was, but I knew that I loved the hell out of it. It was like I was a prophet from the Ancient Testament receiving a vision from God.

    • @bandamani

@@NIHIL_EGO lmao honestly that's the best way to describe it. I got an ad for Daddy Like and watched it confused, then searched for the song a couple of weeks later (thought Dorian was a cis man at the time lol). I enjoyed it, me and my younger brother wouldn't stop singing it around the house. That and Flamboyant were the only 2 songs I listened to for a while, I found Give Great Thanks and was disgusted by it (not sure why but i've seen the light and am obsessed with it now). Quarantine really changed me and my music taste lol. Dorian helped me in understanding and accepting the non-binary community, which I ended up being a part of funnily enough.
