  • A few folks have asked about this so I thought I'd dive in and share my personal thoughts on getting started in The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. I have come up with some easy steps to start playing.
    ► Middle-earth On Games Workshop www.games-work...
    ► Minas Tirith Command www.games-work...
    ► Warriors Of Minas Tirith www.games-work...
    ► Mordor Orc Command www.games-work...
    ► Mordor Orcs Warriors www.games-work...
    ► The Fellowship www.games-work...
    Hopefully, this was a helpful guide to getting started with the game in terms of "what to buy?" when it comes to looking over the Games Workshop range. There are plenty of good rules videos out there worth checking out once you want to get your head around the rules properly.
    Do you think this is a good idea or would you approach things differently?

      @@BecauseOfDragons just one thing that confuses me. What are the starting troops for the Elven factions?
      When going on the GW page this is what is offered for each of the three factions:
      Lothlorien: Galadhrim Warriors or Wood Elf Warriors of Lothlorien
      Rivendell: Warriors of the Last Alliance or Wood Elf Warriors of Lothlorien
      Mirkwood: Mirkwood Armoured Elves Warband, Palace Guards or Mirkwood Rangers

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  Před 2 lety +1

      Lothlorien = you can choose between the two so whichever set you prefer. I'd go Wood Elf Warriors myself
      Rivendell = Warriors of the Last Alliance
      Mirkwood = Mirkwood Rangers would be my choice
      This way you're working with the decently priced plastic kits.

    • @severintw
      @severintw Před 2 lety

      @@BecauseOfDragons Thank you for the quick response.
      So Rivendell is the one faction not coming with a pure elven base unit box, as spearman with shield are not included. Instead you get the 8 Númenor with sword and shield. I guess that is why GW is offering a resin box of 4 High Elf Warriors with spear and shield, right?
      Makes me wonder why they only offer seperate boxes of 3 Bowmen and 3 Spearmen for Númenor instead of 4 if a mix of 4,4,4 is what people go for.
      So the Mirkwood Rangers are the cheaper plastic option. I assume if money is not the deciding factor and resin is acceptable the Mirkwood Armoured Elves Warband might be a better option in order to learn the game as they come in a box of 12 with the three different weapon types. Right?

    • @AndrewMcColl
      @AndrewMcColl Před 2 lety

      @@severintw the mix of 4/4/4 is only a suggestion based on the max size of 12 models in a unit. Three models in a blister is who GW traditionally sold their metal models back in the day, though it does conveniently work with 12 model warbands.
      And when you're learning, marking bases to proxy different weapons is perfectly acceptable. As long as its clear to both players which one is which, you're all good.

    I have the rule book and lots of models, but I have not been able to find the Armies of Middle Earth for a reasonable price. I like your approach in the meantime. If I don't have points, this sounds good.

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  Před rokem

      Paying around with a few miniatures per side is a great way to learn how to play and see where it goes without needing to think about points too much :) Hopefully you have fun!

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  Před 2 lety

      Yeah I think it feels a bit odd to begin with but removing the barrier of points and having to reach some cap etc means that you can just get playing nice and quickly :) We're planning to move onto some 400 point games next now my pals have learned the mechanics :)

    I picked up the Two Towers box way, way, way back in the day but didn't go past getting a few models due to a lack of plastic options.
    I keep meaning to jump back in, but stock levels are lower than a Hobbit's belt right now. Also, I'd love to do the Scouring of the Shire, but the thought of buying Hobbits in blisters of three makes my wallet weep. I should probably bite the bullet and convert some from a cheaper plastic source.

    Have the first three boxed sets from back in the day. I understand the December Osgiliath will have new rule book. Any.idea if that replaces current rule book? What about Army books, will they be obsolete in December?

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  Před 2 lety +2

      As far as GW has revealed, the Armies Of LotR and Armies Of The Hobbit will not be obsolete when it comes to the release of the new boxed set.
      Also - the new Rulebook is basically the same as the current rules BUT it includes all of the errata and FAQ updates since the last book game out. It will also be reformatted and rethemed to fit Osgiliath in terms of art, miniature displays etc. Think of it as a .5 of the latest edition.
      So - you don't NEED it but it would be good if you're planning to do matched play games at tournaments and the like.
