Building Our G Scale Garden Railway

- During the summer a major construction project was undertaken to build a garden railway in what was just a large lawned area. Tons of topsoil was brought in and around 80 shrubs planted with slate dressing surrounding them. The trackbed was laid onto a concrete base which itself required some six tons of concrete, toped with granite chipping as ballast. This is a short film showing the planting, track laying and test runs. The first two locos seen are battery powered and were used to check the levels and pointwork before power was installed and the electric trains could begin operation. The final double headed trains were running less than three days after the track laying began. A daunting plan to attempt in one go but one that will now give years of enjoyment.

Hello from the USA. That is one beautiful outdoor layout. Once those plants fill out a bit it will be fantastic. The video is very professionally done. I'd love to see another video after your plants grow some.
Beautiful set up
Thanks to all for the kind comments, the Railway has now been running for 3 years and no problems have occurred at all. The track has never moved and has had no electric supply issues...the clips and graphite paste have worked superbly. The plants have now matured into lovely bushes etc and the trackwork looks part of the landscape.

It was not to expensive as most materials were bought in bulk, the project took 12 tons of topsoil, 4 tons of concrete and 4 tons of slate plus track and plants of course, under £2000. A detailed log of the work with photographs as it progressed can be found on the 'G Scale Central' forum. This is the first stage and 2013 saw more work to create a path round the edge with a seperate line added alongside. More filming was undertaken and may be posted in due course. The buildings will follow.
I forgot to add the track ballast..one ton of granite chippings, which again was only £130 bulk and did all the track. The plants have now matured an filled most of the available space and the railway has operated now for nearly two years without any problems. Over-engineering is the way!
It is Graphite Grease, produced by LGB in a handy toothpaste tube. A small amount, about the size of a pea, is applied to assist electric conductivity and keep water out of the join. It is ideal when the track is to be left outside all the time. Plastic rail joiners are also used between each section to prevent the joins moving apart and these measures have so far been enough to prevent any electrical supply problems to date.
The LGB plastic rail joiners have held up so far, no track has parted although the granite ballast does help stop movement as it locks together. The electrical supply is also still without problems, it seems the Graphite Grease does the job well although I am told it will need re-applying after a few years.

It is powered by 10amp DC controllers located on the patio area. Three controllers are used, one for each of the main lines and a seperate one for the branch line so three trains can be in use at once. Mains power has been run up from the house and power points located behind the patio for the transformers to connect into.
What gauge wire did you use?

Buildings are on the way. A Loco shed has arrived as have a few workmans huts and signal box. A Station complex is due to be installed next year.
You can sure put a lot of money into model railroading. But I love the hobby

I wish you had a drone with a camera to get some idea if the overall track layout from the air. My soil in Albuquerque, NM is rock hard packed sand. Wonder if I could get away with concrete pavers to establish the bed?
I've got a very big back yard and I wanted to do something like that. BUT 5 months after we moved in to this place I took a 24 foot fall that ended all the dreams I had for this yard. That was back in 2002. I've only been able to maintain the yard I tried to get people to help me fulfill my dreams and they all said that I was crazy to put a train setup out here because we have such bad winters... So I love seeing what others have done with theirs nice job!!!! what does yours look like all these 6 years latter???

I noticed that you squeezed out some material from a tube onto the rail joiners before connecting them. What was that material? Has the rail joiners given you any problems? Is this better than rail clamps?

Lovely garden railway, enjoyed the video..... Two questions if I may; 1) do you have a preferred supplier for track, if so, whom? 2) I need a 16 foot diameter circle, can you recommend the best curve type it flexi track or is there ready made)? Many thanks, Rob.
The track is LGB set track which is perfect for my needs, all 'radius five' curves which are the largest giving around a 12 foot diameter.
Ain't large scale in the back yard just great! I discovered it only this past year and have trains running already. They told me to throw away the rail joiners and use clamps. I didn't listen. Now, 4 months in, I'm having to replace all those joiners with clamps. I'll be curious to know if using that LGB toothpaste keeps your railway from this fate.
Is it track powered?
So you used the rail connectors the come with the track and not track joiners with screws? How they working out for you? No loose tracks?

The sections have plastic clips holding them together, so far no issues and all track remains as laid after nearly five years outside and in regular use. The graphite grease has worked and no problems with power have appeared to date.
Can i ask,don't you worry the track lifting?

What manufacturers made those ES44AC diesels from Union Pacific and Santa Fe? Also that switcher locomotive that NW-2? Are they LGB, MTH, or Aristocraft?
The lead santa fe and the NW-2 are usa trains. The union pacific and the second santa fe are aristocraft. I can tell the lead santa fe is usa trains because its an sd-70 converted to an sd-70ace

So I have a question how did run the power for the switches
but!....are these tracks rust proof from rain, snow, etc..
yes, they are solid brass - and the sleepers (ties) are UV resistant - made to last outdoors

I dont see why you should waste your money on toy train when there are better things to spend money on like cars or a new house, I mean come on you are adults, ADULTS. You should better things to do than play with toy trains
