- Garden Railways magazine shows you how to set up a simple garden railroad. Part one includes: an overview of large-scale starter sets, choosing a location in your yard, buying gauge-1 track, tools you will need, building and roadbed, and connecting the track. Watch part 2 on Garden Railways' channel to see the completion of this garden railway. Visit our website for more beginner information at www.GardenRailways.com

"Your railroad starts with a dream." That sounds so romantic
It's the tracks and where they lead which is the romance for me. Once, when fishing up in the hills of upstate Pennsylvania, I found remnants of a long ago abandoned railway which I later learned was part of a logging operation in the early-1900s. What I stumbled upon was sections of old track, raised rail beds and the path which meandered along the course of a stream. Nearby were pieces of a discarded cast iron stove and my imagination spun the scene from what I'd found. Loggers, lumbermen seated around a table at a rail spur's terminus in a glade eating their breakfast or lunch, dinner perhaps, some one hundred years ago. My father and his hunting buddies had never encountered the remains of this rail spur and they congratulated me on my find.
G scale trains are often made weatherproof. They can run in the rain or snow.
Well done intro into getting started in the hobby. The funny part was when they talked about GFI outlets and electrical safety and then plugged a double insulated (2 prong) plug into the GFI.
if only i watched this before I had a go
leokimvideo i've been watching you since I was five and you've been such a big impact on my love of trains you're the reason I've done model railroading to this day so I want to thank you for getting me into the hobby and for how much of an experience it has been. thank you so much, your loyal subscriber
that would've been a good idea (yes i watched those videos)
You could do it again :p
That would be helpful..

Damn it feels good to be a train gangsta
I have a very small garden but this looks like what I could do so far I love your set ups
I’d like to have a backyard with trains like this.
When I have parties I’d have them run around and deliver beer to people
Or soda if there’s kids
That’d be hilarious
ok they are awesome, i have a few myself and yeah they are awesome for parties
I was thinking about making a g scale layout in my front yard just a little something to ad some whimsy to the garden
This video is quite useful
Very helpful video. Thank you for producing it.
This is very helpful for my future of this great hobby!😂
Brilliant. Entertaining and informative.
Great new video .loads of detail.
"Sponsored by GTA." That made me larf. Good vid. Thanks.
The frick does larf mean?

Big hauler here! And New Bright Rail King!
Fun to watch, keep up the good labor of love. You labor, I 😉.
The alternative is to set things up for a weekend or two's use. The better quality G scale trains have some heft to them; they will be just fine with track laid right in the grass with minimal fiddling with leveling the track other than some very basic adjusting. Use plastic track joiners to hold the sections together and away you go. Run it thru the mulch - snuggle it down into it, spread a little between the rails and pat it down. Once you're done, pick it all up, blow the track free of grass and whatnot or hose it down, put it away, do it again another time. There's a reason to go with large scale - it's not finicky.
Very good video. On How to build a railway track out doors.
im gonna make one!
If you are building something this small or similar size, do yourself a big favor and build a raised bed to put it on. You gain it being easier to operate on as you are not at ground level. My layout is only 16" but it makes a huge difference not having to get on my knees to put things on or off the track.
That’s a really good idea. We have gophers, skunks, and raccoons. Any road I might construct on the ground wound be buried or torn up within days.
Either your idea, or an elevated track. Backyard Shinkansen!
thanks for the help
A word of advice, don't use a regular pencil, use a carpenter's pencil.
Video: “Family hobby”
My brother hearing this: “funny how they think I will do garden railroading…”
Me, my mother, and my father: “well then you will be very bored won’t you?”
most of the garden railways iv'e seen will have a section that is inside where you stage your train to keep it from the weather
Thats expensive, if your a beginner atleast.
@@pveredex excellent
Great - liked that
My childhood in one video
Same.
The nostalgia.
The same nostalgia you'd get from reading old Lego instructions
its very helpful
IT is very helpful and does the old thomas the tank engine count to it runs by it self
Ahh yes i love "old" how to get started model train videos
Do not use Pea Gravel or sand as it will not old shape, demand crusher fines accept NO substitutions you will be miles ahead and remember to have good drainage away from your track.
USA trains make large scale track that can be screwed together, and now Bachmann also makes brass track that can be screwed together
What year is this from? I'm guessing early 90s?
with tracks and scenary
I've been wanting to build a garden subway, but can't find info on that.
Why would you want a garden subway you won't be able to see it
Golden Retriever he could place a camera
If i would do that i would make 1 in H0 scale indoors with a cutout tunnel system.
What if your train derails in a fully closed tunnel? Send another train?
Digg up your garden to take a look?
It's a silly idea.
But that's just me
@@goldenretriever6440 You mean rapid transit system?
Does anyone know details about the crane car in the Hartland Construction Express set?
I don't recall ever seeing it before.
You know, this video's instructions can apply to gauges larger than 45mm/gauge-1. Larger gauges just need more space.
Although when you get to a certain size gauge or larger or if you run RC (either battery or live steam), you don't need a power pack since the locomotives are all powered internally.
Would All Purpose Gravel work?
Is there a UK / GB society for G scale, using British outline stock exclusively??
Model trains? family activity? Umm, need activity to get away from family! LOL.
Almost could bet he is the same voice actor from the 3D Ultra Train Town.
... NO !!! Not all the different track manufactures are interchangable !!! The problem is mostly w/ the switches, but also the track. It is not the width of the track ... it is about the "depth" of the track rail. The Merklin track and switches are not as tall on the rail height, therefore the "flanges" on the wheels bottom out on the "ties" and can lead to a de-railment. Especially, on the "frogs" on the swiches or crossings. I would stay w/ "LGB" or "REA" when possible. When buying "Used" track inspect the "inside" of the "outside" rail on the curved sections as that is were they wear due to the Medal/Steel wheels rubbing as the train goes around the curve. (And I've seen many worn out curved sections ... especially on a lay-out w/ lots of hours of running time, like in a store display ...)
So ... Merklin rolling stock can run on "LGB" & "REA" ...but ... "LGB" rolling stock can have problems on Merklin track ...
To Garden Railways and Kalmbach, informative video however you need to update it and make the video HD,! Please also how about expanding this garden railway etc, so much you could do with this video but please update it it's hard to watch on an iPad in 480 sad video...
Please tell me you're joking. The video is 6 years old.
Valentino Martone yep, I guess Kalmbach doesn’t read the replies anyways.
Your garden railway would be how I did it...
i got no starter set! i got 60 year old train stuff! alot that are so rare, i can't even touch it :0
Outdoor HO scale would be great if it existed. G Scale Sushi Tins are way too expensive for a guy that hasn't got a House to install it in. Cheers
some british families do oo/ho garden railways because of the size of british lawns
Garden railways are weather proof. Tracks, buildings, and accessories can stay outside in almost any weather for years. Trains will have to stay inside when they are not in use. Btw indoor train sets are hundreds of dollars cheaper, i hope you didnt buy one meant mainly for outside, or you probably wasted lots of money.
4:51 May I ask, what do you need a pencil for?
I like it ,i want Santa Fe model set whear available this
Problem with the limestone is a breed of shipworm that eats limestone.
This is 11 years old. Time to re-upload it in 1080P or better.
Is that 4' diameter curve?
Is it a railway in the garden or a garden with a train? Most moms are like that. lol
9:25 Why Would You Water The Track Because They All Ready Watered The Road Bed But Why Water It With Electric Track
To level the ballast and keep dust down.
@@Ih8kone Makes Kinda Some Sense

Probably early 90's
+Magical Portal I think it was 2078

we don't have gfi,s in Australia
+Lachlan Mendham HI i like this video especially tips about rail road, i found an useful method/ product was Elumpa BuildingsRailroad Alchemist - it will be on google if you need it
could you make a garden railroad with an HO scale train?
***** yes you can but not in the rain, because large/g scale trains are water proof and ho is not
***** you can get more scale distance but if a tiny bit of debris falls on the tracko on ho then it will cause derailments but if it falls on g scale it wont matter
all trains would work but they arent water prof
No
Idk if there's a hobby shop near me :(
How to buy from india
its too bad i dont have a hobby store near me
The internet is a marvelous invention.
What scale is this?
G scale
Large Scale, also known as G Scale
What about a concrete track bed?
Brisco Llama Might crack unless you use rebar if ground settles. Real railroads don't use it much except for ties.
for a garden railroad that could work
Was this in the 1990's or something? Because it's kinda hard to tell.
This is very old, alot of the train sets shown are no longer available. The basic information about building one is still valid though
@@badkittynomilktonight3334 but I was just asking what year this took place. Is it from the 90's or something?
Probably late 1990s maybe very early 2000s.
"Large scale train". Honey you ain't seen nothing yet. Get in to 1.5" scale. A locomotive can way over a ton. Now that is large scale

Marklin and Bachmann tracks are *NOT* suited for outdoor use! They will get rusted in a matter of weeks, if not days.
Nope, Bachmann makes special outdoor track.

Ive started by buying a shoddy battery loco for twenty quid and scratchbuiling a ton of wagons with 3d printed wheels. Track? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…
Please don't use an herbicide (Roundup) in your yard. Why poison your yard when you are out trying to enjoy your hobby in nature?
Because I need to lay down track? Good grief, just spray with precision.
Or use eco-friendly herbicide
How much
around 300 dollars for the starter set, but that is a good price if you pick wisley, i recommend getting G scale model trains.

Electric powered track connections are a horrible idea for outdoor garden railroading, especially running long freight on really long track. I prefer battery powered model trainsets.

Not G scale better!!!
No,G scale can be inside and out,HO scale has to be plugged in INSIDE and G scale just has a remote control
