[Below is the original description by Monty posted on Gametrailers:] Dead Fantasy II Posted: Mar 24, 2008 @ 03:46 PM Greetings friends, finally back again. Sorry it's a bit later than I promised, but hopefully my quick patches were able to bring this to you faster with minimal errors. First off I'd like to thank an online colleague Firia (firia.deviantart.com) for pointing me towards the soundtracks that was the founding inspriation for this sequence. I still remember that night when these images came to me. The course this epsiode was to take was serious destiny. The first thing that comes to mind about the production of this vid is how much I wanted to give you the viewer more. I've described it heartfully many times as "bang for buck" or "giving the viewer their money's worth." What's that you say? "Oh silly Monty, why worry about giving me my money's worth for something that totally free? You so crazy!" Wellllll, I find it funny these days, how it seems that free still isn't quite free enough anymore, things like time and attention is a value that's hard to give up to just anything. And just as I learned (with Haloid) that making a good movie isn't enough for the viewer, but also making a good movie that they want. The relationship between filmaker and viewer of what you want and what I want to give you. One could hope someday I'll be in the position to make that video game motion picture that fully pays tribute to what the fans wish for while making the reasonable comprises of established filmaking. You should know that I wasn't much a fan of Dead Fantasy 1. Not that I'm not proud of some moments, but in the listed episodes of this series it was the one I wanted to do the least. But obviously the only one that could come first because of what it established. When that one was done an over with, really the fight was only beginning. It should also be mentioned that this episode wasn't meant to happen, the original plan was for Tifa to show up and split them up into the three respective pairs following with Dead Fantasy II begin Yuna Vs Kasumi, Dead Fantasy III Tifa Vs Hitomi, Dead Fantasy IV beign Rikku VS Ayane. But to to the immense response of how much you all were looking forward to an even fight between the two teams, it wouldn't have been fair to the viewer to take something away just as soon as it was introduced. I thoroughly glad I opted to go this route, it just goes to show that you really can't be certain about what you do without considering who it is you making this for. Character choice Spoilers Ok so BTW, this movie was also still planned as a 3 on 3 start to finish, ending with the sequence that happens at about 5:40 and splitting into three different directions for the respective indivual battles to follow. But I was torn for quite some time as to whether or not I should expand the roster for many reasons. There was a great deal of response to DF 1 being "I wonder who'll show up next." And you should know that despite how it seems like I can do whatever I please for my movies. Being a good filmaker means there are rules that I need to follow as well. 1. Adding one Character to each side would make it 4 vs 4. Since 4 isn't a primary number I'd have to add 2 to each side, therefore making it a 5 vs 5. Now that would be crazy. Now there are plenty of characters to draw from on the FF side, but it's not that easy on the DOA side for rule #2... 2. This is a weapon battle. In classic RPG's a weapon is in a way part of the Character Yuna = Guns, Kasumi = Sword, Ayane = Dbl Sword (Weird purple blade she gets from defeating her father Genra from DOA3), Rikku = Blades. Now that's just about it for weapons on the DOA side, which brought about adding Hitomi = Fists, which was then Balanced with Tifa = Also Fists. The problem now is even though there are plenty of girls on the FF side who have weapons, there are no girls left on the DOA side in which I can justify a weapon. Sure perhaps Lei Fang could wield a staff, or Christie could use a knife/wire ('cause she's an assassin) but none of it is really justified to their character via example. It's that level of thought that I try to put into my work. Even though the Ayane thing was a stretch, it was still recognizable to her character. So the next furthest thing would be to perhaps include one of the guys (read rule #3) or extend to universe to encompass other games in the DOA universe, like Ninja Gaiden... wait a sec... :? 3. No guys... they're harder to model/find parts for. Don't ask me why. Plus women are more fun (for now) Therefore... Mixing it up I HATE PREDICTABILITY. Adding the expected characters only means that it'll give me the option of doing the same. So adding Rinoa/Kairi/Rachel was also able to give this movie flavor in both theme and function rather than repeating characters who'll interact in already established method with different skins. So Rinoa with wings or Kairi with enchanted weaponry, Rachel as the "Tank" character meant giving me options to keep it interesting. I almost regret submitting this as a user movie seeing as the HD version which will soon follow will really showcase all the little details I worked to hard for. And once you're done watching this, you'll notice I'm far from finished. At least 5 more episodes to follow in this series starting with Dead Fantasy III Rikku Vs Ayane. What was what I felt was perhaps the strongest one was also previously planned as Dead Fantasy IV is now officially moved to Dead Fantasy III and starting production ASAP. The reason for moving it forward was what I learned most when doing this movie as opposed to Dead Fantasy I. I shouldn't be making a movie unless it's something I absolutely love. Yuna Vs Kasumi & Tifa VS Hitomi were a tad weak compared to Rikku VS Ayane, I'll have to let those stew and come back only better before I decide to start production of them. But RIkku Vs Ayane on the other hand is perhaps one of the most powerful visions I've had and needs to be made the sooner the better. You seriously have not seen anything yet. -Monty
"RIkku Vs Ayane on the other hand is perhaps one of the most powerful visions I've had and needs to be made the sooner the better". This makes me super curious even if I know we'll probably never find out what these visions were.. Thanks for posting the original descriptions.. I never had the honor to meet him, and yet he changed my life so I feel like every single bit of information I find about him is really precious :)
I cannot even begin to fathom how much effort and time this must have taken. 8 characters and like 3 major environment changes??? Thank you for helping people discover this. Monty Oum continues to blow my mind.

We wish you were here, Monty.
How ironic he was jazzed about Ayane vs Rikku. I saw some of the renders he did but he that was the one fight he mentioned that he never finished.
Even by today's standards this whole fight still looks amazing. Monty truly was a skilled man.
There's so many times this could transition to a fighting game stage then continue this badass shit
