    You can dip an electric water heater in the sump tank to preheat the oil. Many race teams have something like that so they can preheat the car in the pits. Oil on temp, engine and coolant will warm up in one or two minutes once the engine is started.

    So I have built a few dry sump systems in my time and have one question: With that oil tank sitting that high, and not using trochoid pumps, how are you going to combat oil backrun into the engine after shut off?
    Otherwise, thanks for sharing this great build :-)

    • @RobDahm
      @RobDahm  Před 2 měsíci +4

      Good question. I had that happen on the 4 rotor when we fired it up on the engine stand years ago. The oil leaked back into the pan and out the turbo drain line emptying the entire tank over night. Right now it takes a little to start the engine with cold plugs so thats helping sort the standing oil but it hasnt been an issue yet. I know the cosworth team had the same issue. they would purposely not start the engine until the pan was cleared of solid oil as the hex input on the pump isnt strong enough for that load. crazy

    For heating up your parts, those small torches dont put out a lot of BTU's, an oven would work better but the best option is either a oxy acetylene torch. Also a mini fridge doesn't really get cold enough to make a big difference, cooling parts doesn't make a huge difference compared to heating. Love the content man keep it up!!

    I'm genuinely concerned about Rob racing Pikes Peak in an untested car. I have total confidence in his team, but we all know that even the best built cars need testing. Any thoughts, anyone?

    Rob, Small champfer on that pre frozen bearing front edge would have been an advantage? Big TV screen on wall easily seen, HDMI to computer with pre-programmed each required step build sequence so dont forget anything e.g."dowels" bolt torques, hints, etc. Might make these last minute builds a lot easier to get right every time..... Great job anyway, look forward to the Pikes Peak run!

    You should get a bottle of liquid co2 with a siphon tube for freezing bearings. Its relatively cheap and it get the temp down to -40

    21:59 Have you considered integrating some form of heat plate into your hydraulic press? The top portion could be supplemented with a liquid nitrogen reservoir if needed, and the base could be heated many ways, but my initial thought was just using the elements from a hotplate . . . the goal would be to avoid both parts getting closer to a neutral temp when transferring to the hydraulic press

    if ya get a cheap oven on market place you can get that aluminum at the perfect temp for the bearing to fall in. bake at 275 on the middle rack for 45 min.

    25:45 Rob, I am a mechanical engineer, and my job is to ensure medical devices assemble correctly-amongst other things. I would love to provide guidance on GD&T and material modifiers, so that you know parts always fit together-size is only part of the equation.

    the thumbnail really shows just how small those rotaries are, its pretty amazing how such a tiny engine can handle as much power as they do.
