- A playthrough of Virgin's 1993 licensed-based platformer/shooter for the Sega Genesis, Robocop Versus The Terminator.
Played through on the normal difficulty level.
There were a number of games, all relatively similar, released between 1993 and 1994 that bore the name Robocop versus The Terminator, but I've always felt that the Genesis version was the best one, no questions. It was the lead development platform, so I guess that's hardly a surprise, but the other games definitely feel lacking in comparison.
Robocop Versus The Terminator is based on a comic that was released in 1992 that pitted two of the most bad-ass 1980s Hollywood cyborg-heroes against one another. Apparently, in this alternate 1985, err.... 1997, Cyberdyne incorporated tech used to create Robocop into their new AI platform Skynet. When Robocop used his spike thingy to gain access to Skynet, he ends up as computer data that eventually can rebuild his physical form in the future so that he can take on the Terminators. Convoluted and more than a bit silly, yes, but does it really need to do anything but give us a basic excuse to participate in this epic showdown?
The game looks extraordinarily good for a Genesis game. The backgrounds are all grimey and appropriately dystopian in their aesthetics (though Detroit really never gets portrayed as anything but dystopian in games - and probably rightfully so for the sake of authenticity lol) and feature loads of little details, animations, and breakable items. The city skyline in the opening stages is pretty striking (eat your heart out, Lethal Enforcers), and Cyberdyne's corporate HQ is just as fun to look at as it is to play through with the number of things that can be blown up as you go through the offices. I think the real draw to the graphics here (as any kid in the 1990s would have told you) would have to be the level of graphic violence on display.
If you like the color red, you'll appreciate how generous its use is here. Pretty much everyone explodes or dissolves into puddles as appendages fly in every which direction. The game was rated MA-13 which was quite a surprise, since I think that it out-Mortal Kombats Mortal Kombat any day of the week.
I did input a code at the beginning of the first stage to show off just how much the game "earned* it's MA-13 rating. After I take out the first guy, I paused and punched in a code for... shall we say, "enhanced enemy-defeat animations." After I unpause, just take a look at what happens to the next enemy. Awesome, right? Especially if you use CZcams's slow-down feature - there's some impressive attention to detail there.
The soundtrack is pretty good, sounding as raw, crunchy, and edgy as FM ever did on the Genesis. The vocals in the first level track made my sister and I laugh endlessly as kids - the voice saying Robocop, Terminator always sounded like a phone-sex operator to us.
Finally, let me impress on you just how incredibly difficult this game is. The first half is actually not bad - it's quite manageable, even for relatively inexperienced players. By the time you get to the later stages, though, there's a good chance the frustration will have you in tears if you haven't just turned it off already. The final stage in particular is merciless, and that last boss is probably among the hardest I ever seen in a 16-bit game. I really loved the game and forced my way through with untold hours of practice, but if you aren't patient and willing to replay the game dozens of times to get good enough, I highly doubt you'll finish it without cheating at it.
Robocop Versus The Terminator was a complete surprise to me when it was released. It was better than both the Robocop and The Terminator games (though both were pretty good in their own right - this version is running on a tweaked version of the engine that the original Genesis Terminator was running on!), featuring some really impressive production values, and a difficulty level up amped up through the roof. Add in some heavy animated violence and a kickass soundtrack and you have a 16-bit cart that is every bit as hardcore as Alex Murphy or the T-800 ever were.
And seriously, what prepubescent boy in 1994 wouldn't have worshiped such a game?

It's kinda funny how RoboCop can climb a ladder about 5 times faster than he can walk.
Lol, I use to think the same thing
Same
He has super speed but only when a ladder is present. The drawback is that without a ladder he is slower than the average human. Ladder man!
Hah! never thought about it.
Guest he’s been modified. Who knows maybe running is next
“Haven’t we done this before?”
“I have no record of a previous encounter.”
“We have met. I’m sure of it.”
Close, but not accurate
"I have no record of a previous encounter"
Bro never got that intro until now 😭
One of my best memories was watching my dad play this. He used to play it all the way through about once every couple of weeks and it was just a great bonding experience with all us kids sitting on the bed watching while he played. None of us kids were good enough gamers back then to finish it but we all tried. And sometimes Dad would get sick of it halfway through and toss the controller to the nearest one of us so we could see if we could finish it. We usually died pretty quickly lol. But when my Aunt borrowed the SEGA and never gave it back, that kind of put an end to those times. I wish SEGA would re-release it so that we could play together again...
i bought a sega mini and you can add this game with a pretty simple hack with any computer. brings back great memories when i used to rent this as a kid but i never made it past level 3 untill now.
@@buzzyduder3531 Is it worth getting a sega mini or the original console instead?
stop lying
Your about to get a treat in the next year or two
I was in elementary school when this came out and my dad would always beat me at seeing who could get the furthest without dying. He was born in ‘48 but no longer with us. ❤
Starts off with Robocop saying "Excellent". Which is excellent
I always thought that was Arnie. 😎
"I'd buy that for a dollar"
@Andrew Pollock what?
Love the Mortal Kombat 11 reference when Robocop speaks to Liu Kang.
I thought it was smash tv at first
@@Hotsaucebauce3943 It's originally from the first RoboCop movie.
"Dead or alive, you're coming with me!"
One of the most badass crossovers of all time, this desperately deserves a reboot.
Or make an Anniversary Collection for all systems even switch
Reboot this all the way!
Robocop Versus Terminator brings two of the coolest 80s franchises together to create something dark and fantastically visceral (in every sense of the word). If you can handle the difficulty level, you won't find many better movie games on the Genesis than this!
As a kid, I remember thinking: "Wait, what? Is there a movie of this coming out?" But it never did come to be (probably for the best, if we're going off of Alien vs. Predator or Freddy vs. Jason).
This game defines the Genesis for me. They had some of the most fluid (no pun intended) sprite work; especially the gore / death animations.
"Genesis Does What Nintendon't!" Finally -- it's true!
After years of resentment for missing out on Nintendo games and RPGs, this game was my big "Okay, I'm finally glad I got stuck with a Genesis" moment. My friends and I would rent this game every other week and pause between the animation frames to study the gore effects. We used this game as a reference for our own twisted animations.
I remember being so impressed by the muzzle-flash highlights on Robocop's metal armor whenever you fired your gun and pausing to study those as well. This game was so full of awesome little effects animation details; like the blood-soaked curtains when you killed the window assassins, or the eyes in the Terminators when they came back to life.
Also, being able to aim while on ladders or poles? As a lifelong Mega Man fan, that was a gift. Although, I do wonder: why is Murphy so fast on ladders and poles? :P
I really can't think of a cooler game for your average teenaged boys who grew up around that time. Save for maybe some "Robocop Controls" (clunky :P), I would say that this game probably still holds up today for anyone who is into those movies and finds joy in simple arcade action games.
It's too bad kids today don't have such iconic and fun action movies. John Wick is probably the closest thing to it and that's far from a Terminator, my friend.
The '80s and early '90s wasn't as ideal as everyone likes to remember, but I'll be damned if we didn't have the best action movies and actors. It's kind of amazing, looking back, just how many worthwhile stars we had in awesome movies every year.
Also, you would've never known that you and your friends would've had so much fun with this game, based only on the unassuming box art. I rented it on a whim when it came out, thinking that it might be a disappointment like so many of the Wolverine / X-Men games that sounded cool in theory but ended up playing like shit.
Man, if there's one game that ever taught me not to judge by covers, it's this one.
That, and ICO.
Thanks for reminding me about this one.
Nintendo Complete: I most certainly enjoyed this game.Played it all night long ago.I'd STILL play it today,"old" or not!! 👍👍👍👍🍺.
Written by Frank Miller, Art by Walt Simonson.
It absolutely drives me insane that it's the year 2020 and we STILL haven't seen this realized on the big screen. But the way they've handled recent Terminator movies and the Robocop reboot.... maybe that's a good thing =/
@Artuurs Z. Sorry kid, but TMNT "Turtles in Time" for the SNES beats TMNT "Hyperstone Heist" for the Genesis everytime..
That opening track is funky as an old batch of collard greens.
Man 90s video games had BALLS for DAYS. I miss that era.
No they didn't
Well, that giant Terminator head sure had a ton.
Loved this game, was my favorite, and still shows how good it is to this day. Everything with it was so pleasing, the weapons, graphics, bosses, and the gore. But it was a bit scary.
Sucks that the gore disappears once you get to the future levels.

I might have to grab that as a sound effect for notifications.
I love how human enemies that Robocop kills just explode into a pool of blood.
One of my favorite games growing up. There's actually a hidden level in stage 2 where you can potentially get the ED-209 weapon early on in the game. FYI 👍👍👍
Ah, so you _can_ dual-wield that thing. Cool!
Ever since I first played this game way back in 1994,I've been waiting YEARS for a "Robocop vs Terminator" movie. The Genesis version was my favorite. Unlike the SNES game, this version was so much more darker, and had blood, gore, scantly dressed women with guns, great boss fights and a lot of cool cheat codes. If I am not mistaken,I believe this game was based on a graphic novel written by Frank Miller. "Robocop vs Terminator" is definitely in my top 10 list of all-time favorite Sega Genesis games. Great post 👍
if your playing the new mortal kombat game robocop and terminator are both in it. Robocop will be coming to mk 11 on 27 may
Nintendo during the SNES era were heavily censoring their games because they wanted to maintain their family friendly image. Sega on the other hand invited more mature games on their platform to great success, which got a lot of SNES developers and players over to the Genesis due to their far less restrictive game guidelines.
Unfortunately, it did get Sega into quite a bit of trouble when the whole "video games are becoming too violent and pornographic" era in the early 90s. Sega tried to create their own video game rating board called the VRC (video game rating council) to try and avoid government regulation, unfortunately it didn't fly with legislators which eventually came up with the ESRB. They had to tame their games down after that, but were still far more permissive of more teen/adult games.
Alien vs predator too
@@meastroparkinson5258 So you don't like the Alien vs Predator movies that were made so far ?
@@daniel-zh9nj6yn6y no...
I literally just now learned of this old games existence
I love how in all video games from this era there is a ladder every 30 feet lol
We never did get the dark, hyperviolent movie of this crossover masterpiece that we deserved. Guess we'll forever have to wonder what could have been. Arguably my favorite Sega game, countless hours sunk into it.
Seeing this made me pull out my genesis and my copy of this game that ive had since release. Haven't played it in a long time!!! Brings back some great memories!
Why in the world has this not been made a movie? Adam and I wanna know!
im only 23 but im having a major nostalgia trip with this one. I remember as a kid, it been so important to break those windows in the first few levels. never made it past the ED 209 so it was really cool to see it played through. still can't remember till this day it was a cross over terminator game though, that was a neat surprise
That opening credits/level one music lit.
That "Terminator" soundbite will possibly the only thing I remember when the inevitable dementia kicks in decades from now...
I got this game when I was 8 and didn't beat it until I was in my late 20s. With cheats. Brutally difficult but one of my favorite games of all time.
Give up gaming mate, you’re 💩
Both Robocop and Terminator joins MK 11: Aftermath
Awesome game, cracked up on the theme song
i remember playing this as a kid it was one of my favorites great game
They missed like 3 secret rooms that i discovered as a kid. Every character was done so perfectly. Only 2 characters missing: T-1000 & Ottomo. That wouldve been Badass.
BREW!!!! Murphy’s hand cannon just turns you into GOO!!! If I had been the second bad guy and saw that happen, I woulda changed my life plan lol
that retro game music is gold!!! i wish a could play this again with my father...
This dude really loves his flame thrower.
Awesome game and among my all-time favorites. Still so much fun to play. Feels like it compliments the first two respective Terminator and RoboCop films. For me, this game is the true proper third chapter for both characters. The Hell with everything after Terminator 2 and RoboCop 2, for me in my head canon this game comes after them.
The proper third chapter? Yes, I always think in that, that's true!!! Maybe for that reason this was always my predilect SEGA Genesis videogame, and my favorite of my entire chilhood. 😉👌
@@camoxtremecarnosaur9567 It says something about how amazing this game is it's revered and remembered much better than everything that's come after RoboCop 2 and T2. It felt like the makers of it were fans who cared about delivering a game that felt like it complimented the films.
"We have met before, I'm sure of it"
Robocop
he can't run
but he can zip through ladders
Nostalgic as hell. Remember only getting anywhere as I managed to trigger the secret level where you could leave with any gun by complete accident. Props for showing the adult me it could be done sans such cheese
Robocop walks slow as shit but could climb fast as fuck on a ladder 🤣🤣🤣
Looking back on it, how the hell did I ever beat this game??
What a surprise, i did not know that Robo cop can jump.
now they are joined in MK11
I thought there were minimal differences between this Sega version and the Nintendo version, at least in my opinion I think this one has better weapons and if you return back in the level there are no enemies in the Nintendo's version enemies were always pooping out from nowhere and I like this one has enemies from the robocop movies, Nintendo only had ED-209. But Nintendo's version had better music and I like the way in a comic book style they were telling the story.
Aww brings back childhood memories me & my dad used to play this all the time in the 90s.
I remember I tried this game as a kid so many times but I could never beat it.
The sound track and effects are amazing though
Ünal Külük.. Çok özledim seni. Keşke hayatta olsan da seninle bu oyunu oynayabilseydik..
I grew up playing this on the Super Nintendo, but the Genesis version is so different but in a good way. Seems way better.
I loved this game as a kid. And I know I have it but like many this game just disappeared.
Wish I had this game as a kid😢
I used to play Robocop vs. The Terminator years ago. Liked that one too. Skilled at that one. I remember this when RoboCop was created by OCP when a police officer 👮♀️ killed by bank robbers in Detroit and his partner found him dead 💀 and he was taken to the hospital 🏥 and they couldn’t save him, that means he was pronounced dead and was taken to the OCP and he went out to bring justice to the streets and the bank robbers who killed him got what they deserved for what they did to him when he was either trying to apprehend the bank robbers he said dead 💀 or alive. 👍 The Terminator has Arnold Schwarzenegger in it and RoboCop has Peter Weller in it but was later played by Robert John Burke. 👍 I like games based on movies 🍿, not only that other action/adventure games too and that’s good times I had years ago.
I barely realized some of the music got pulled from Chakan the Forever Man. I have fond memories of both these games.
i use to be a beast at this game this is one part of my childhood ill never forget
I played this a lot as a kid and like most games of the era just getting past the 2nd level was an achievement... never saw the terminators lol
It’s nowhere near as hard as turtles (nes) mega man or battletoads
Robocop is saving humanity, ... but he's killing mostly humans
This game was so dope
They don't make games this cool anymore (ahead of their time).

seeing this now it is clear why i barely finished this game then with 99 lives cheat code lol. it looks crazy difficult. props to the player in the video, great job!
The fuckkkinng mussiicc is amazzingg haha. I remmeber playing this when I was like 8. The best crossover ever. Thanks for the upload.
I love and miss the hell out this game
Keep up good work!. Thank you for this channel.
2 decades after this game released, we were fortunate to have RoboCop and Terminator as downloadable kontent kharacters in Mortal Kombat 11!🧠🎮😆
Hah, was thinking "that music sounds an awful lot like Chakan", and sure enough, same guy did music/sound effects. Also, why don't we have an awesome open-world Terminator game at this point? You could slowly liberate areas of the planet from the machines and send Terminators back/go back yourself to defend key people, and if you failed it would change the landscape etc.
It's a very awesome game on the Sega Genesis.
omg i loved this game so much as a kid... my brother bought it for me. I still have the title melody in mind after more then 20 years
"Rescue OCP employee's, trash the office!"
Hurray! Collateral Damage!
I love the distinction that is made. "Don't hate the people who work there, they're just cogs in the machine."
My favorite videogame from SEGA Genesis!!! I played it with my brother thousands of times!!! The sounds are great, the graphics are superv...!!! Since that I've been waiting for a movie version of 'Robocop vs Terminator'.
P.s.: my predilect battle: with the Ed-209 at the end of level 5. 👌
Some of the best sound effects and music
Man, I love this game!
That final stage is designed like it could have been in a Star Wars game.
One of the best movie to video game adaptations. Even though RoboCop vs. Terminator wasn't a movie this game managed to combine the atmosphere and spirit of the original Terminator and RoboCop and put it into an action packed game that was a lot of fun and properly brutal. This version is far superior to it's SNES counterpart
It WAS based on a movie, albeit a cancelled one at that. There was also a comic book series that had the same crossover idea. Why the movie never saw release is unknown, though one would theorize that neither the Robocop nor Terminator staff would be able to comprehend a reasonable plot, so Virgin Games had to make do with their own plot.
Best ladder climb animation in any game ha,,, usually takes forever...i remember the sliding on the pipes and just hopping around on them..😅
Mortal Kombat Robocop VS Terminator bring me here..
For many of us, it did. It's a dream match that would've worked well for a live film in the 90s. Hollywood missed a huge opportunity.
Welcome to the 90s, where most videos games end with you facing the same antagonist boss only this time as a Large Floating Head.
One of my favorite games when I had the genesis video game system I use to play it many hours.
So Did I
I never watched Robocop movie or read any comics about him, I always thought he was some kind of childhood superhero but it seems I was wrong, he is a childhood Badass character, merciless against bad guys
I can see why they put him in MK11
In BROFORCE they added Robocop as a playable character, that game has so many badass characters from movies from the 80's 😁

DANG! The final boss doesn't hold back, huh?! (Then again, we expect a final boss to be the ultimate challenge in any good game anywho!) Anyway, good work here!
Love that the first few stages are Robocop demonstrating his Terminator skills. Guess Miranda rights are just a suggestion in Old Detroit.

Looks like the MK folks are here. Welcome to a classic!
this game is my childshood, for me was gore for the enemies death. The funny is i didnt know the name of the game and when you faces terminator i thought was a easter egg
A giant head as a boss. Midway must have designed this game.
Man I remember how happy I was to finally beat this game, very unique never was a 3d version which is surprising.
Yup, the violence is in there alright. And the difficulty as well...
Never played this myself, but after hearing every Robocop vs Terminator reference out there I had to check this out as well.
E-Swat was never as chaotic as this, but somehow I remember raging at it plenty of times.

Yeah, I loved this game. It is a classic. Shame Arnie and Weller didn't team up and make an actual movie instead of all those lousy sequels and tv shows we got. They could still do it. We would just need to de-age Arnold and get Weller's likeness and voice (since he isn't really up for playing the role anymore).
Well... beside a godawful comic cross over, we still wait for the movie version of this since the 1990's :D
Hanferd I heavily disagree with your opinion.
I know it will be "disappointing" like these Freddy VS Jason or Alien VS Predator, but it be a fun popcorn movie for the Summer... I hope :D
