    An important tip that I learned was that iso does not cause grain by itself. It's fast shutter plus iso that causes it. If you're doing night photography and you're doing long exposures don't be afraid to go higher than normal with your iso.

    • @JuneNafziger
      @JuneNafziger Před rokem +1

      That’s really interesting! I guess it probably has something to do with allowing the sensor to better deal with noise. That also probably means this is not true for film because ISO (at least in B&W) is adjusted through the size of the grains.

    • @dawnkeyy
      @dawnkeyy Před rokem

      @@JuneNafziger Yes, as far as film goes, the ISO is basically "this is how many grains of this chemical there are per unit area". Literal grains. They are as big and as dense as they are and there's nothing you can do about it, but buy different ISO film

  • @stanspb763
    @stanspb763 Před rokem

    If the basic exposure triangle are understood, all cameras and scenes produce results expected intentionally. If they are not understood, every click of the shutter is simply a random guess. So spend a few hours understanding light, internal amplitude gain, duration of exposure and aperture interact to produce what you expect, with any camera.
    One thing about this video that is misleading it that the division of setting steps are no equal in stops. For example, ISO and shutter speed are not usually divided into equal stop values. Depending on your setup of the camera, 1 click can be 1/3rd stop or 1 stop. On most cameras, you can set a choice in step change size. The difference between photography and snapshots is how the results are deliberate choices made by the photographer. So a badly over or under-exposed image is the user's fault but a great image is also the photographer's deliberate intent.

      Basically yes, all three settings use the same scale, they are measured in stops, or usually in half or thirds of stops.
      One stop is defined as a doubling in light, so increasing a setting by one stop will have the same effect on brightness no matter which setting you adjusted, and adjusting another setting by one stop in the opposite direction will perfectly compensate for it.

      He’s not doing the greatest job of explaining it but basically even if your camera is set up to only allow adjusting one setting at a time (like say you need to hold a button while using a dial to change a different setting) it’s all set up to be in half/doubling pairs, so if you half your shutter speed, you get half the light in. Similarly, going one stop up let’s in double the light, so once you have a good exposure as a baseline (either through trial and error or through using a light meter) you can tweak the settings without loosing that good exposure.
