This is a Must after assembly, especially on heavily modified ported engines or as a diagnostic test for engine health.

he's correct about not recommending expansion plugs.plates are better.ive used alloy plates on exhaust and intake with its gaskets as well as exhaust manifold & carb base to confirm sealing. his plates are twice as thick as the ones i made. great idea!

I have a similar video on my channel. I used a 15psi gauge and fill with 8psi and let it sit. It should hold the pressure indefinitely! But no less than 1 psi drop in pressure per minite is bare minimum... If it leaks at all I find it and fix it. Normally its crank seals but Ive seen leaks in reed cage seals and even leaking from engine to coolant chambers and out of the coolant ports in behalf of cylinder base gasket leak.

In a perfect world you are correct.
That being said using a high end gauge will a good amount of travel per PSI on the gauge I have found no need to test over a min or 2. IN that time THERE SHOULD BE ZERO movement of the needle. if there is the leak needs to be found and corrected. But people do go overboard . I have also seen people damage and blow out seals trying to test there engine. thanks for the comment
@@EricksonMachinePerformance yes. I use a sensitive 15 psi gauge amd set my compressor to 20psi to fill the engine. I agree though. People often dont stop to think about thing before hand and what the consequences of their actions will be. Once again great video!
Are the reed valves suppose to hold 8psi also? Do you have to use the block off plates for the intake?
Hey, can you make a video explaining which size piston to use for what size bore, and if you buy a random PV engine that needs a rebuild, what size the next bore should be and what size piston to match it??? I never understood this. Amazing videos by the way!!
every engine is different unfortunately you have to measure

im working on my 787 seadoo cant get past the lean bog off idle..rebuilt the eng ,carbs with no luck. blocked off intake and exhaust pulled 10lbs vacuum only held for 20eac...how do you know witch seal is the issue?

Any reason for not spraying down seals and potential leak surfaces with bubbles? Could potentially find a very small leak that the gauge may not detect? What's your take
The gauge I use is EXTREMELY sensitive. You want a Guage with a large swing but with small values. If you use the right gauge you will see the pressure drop. I only spray when the gauge shows a leak. If you don't have an accurate gauge or one that's sensitive. You can hold the pressure longer or spray. When I'm testing I don't allow any movement on my gauge. ( that would be considered a fail)
Mine holds perfect for 2-5mins without any detectable drop
After 1 hour im down 1psi.

You could used a popoff gauge for this as well, correct?
Not really. It would take an hr to pump it up. Those little pumps don't push enough air

No.
The labyrinth seal can leak between holes and not affect anything. If it was like a seadoo with inner oil seal you wouldn't hold pressure because it would leak out the rotary shaft oil fittings
Ok thanks. I just assumed a leaking center seal could cause a lean condition when the upgoing piston will be starting the intake stroke.
@Andre Hoogendyk The way a labyrinth seal works is it really only works while it's rotating. It's not a standard rubber lip seal. If you have a crank like a seedoo with oil seal then will leak on this type of test. The basic concept of labyrinth seals is to reduce contaminant ingression not only by restricting the clearance through which particles enter but also by creating areas of turbulent flow to exclude contaminants
