  • In the ninth episode of our ten-part series on coercive control, Dr Torna Pitman explores the destructive legacy that follows coercively controlling relationships.
Rather than bringing healing and closure, the ending of a relationship with a coercive controller can herald a new and equally damaging campaign of dominance and manipulation for the victim and their children.
In the post-separation version of coercive control, the abuser may wield a range of tactics to exhaust the victim's personal and financial resources and undermine their wellbeing. In this way the coercive controller is able to perpetuate their subjugation of the family, even post-separation.
This series is for our clients, your clients, your friends or family and the general public. Knowledge saves lives and helps us recognise the loss of human rights inherent to unequal relationships.

Thank you I feel heard and understood. No one will help me or my daughter. In fact, the systems have ridiculed and punished me for trying to protect my child. Thank you for your valuable research and advocacy. I am confident that someday this will prevent the court system from colluding with the abuser.

When so many mothers have no choice but to represent themselves, the burden of research seems insurmountable, yet I am immensely grateful to you for publicly providing the information because abuse and risk of violence is hard to prove. A woman's intuition doesn't hold up in court, but the pattern of those double binds fits with my experience and is provable through the court's very orders. I have some emails and texts and can refer to the language and dynamics there to prove risk in staying, whereas I can't prove that the perpetrator is the one who tampered with my vehicle and so on. Oddly, even court documents reveal language that aids the coercive control, for example, in the case of a dispute regarding visitation, the result would be a reduction in my time with the child. The court chose to automatically assume me responsible and punish me by default. I want to remind women out there, that you can leave for another state with your children and be heard in another court citing UCCJEA emergency jurisdiction. Thats all we have protecting us currently. I have also heard of prospective legislation called the Safe Child Act. Someday, we'll get there.

There is a dire need for change in the mindset of all “ men” ,boys and culture in general . More awareness on this topic should be taught in schools and on tv .

This is a great video, thank you, how do we prove this though? Now in some states it’s a chargeable offence, it’s so intricate and insidious, 23 years is enough
