A workbench does not always need fancy joinery and vices. This simple workbench is quick to build (less than one hour) and it can be used for lots of different woodworking tasks.
It's built using only one plywood sheet and some 2x4 lumber. For extra strength you can add glue if you want.
Measurements:
The legs are 88 cm
The top is 200x70 cm
The shelf is 200x50 cm

Nice simple bench. Thanks for posting.
Legs 88cm = 2.89 ft (34.65 in.)
Top 200x70cm = 6.56 ft (78.74 in.) x 2.3 ft (27.56 in.)
Shelf 200x50cm = " " x 1.64 ft (19.69 in)
Thanks
@@DieterSchneider Dieter, how many 4x2 would it take to build a 9ft long 30 inch wide workbench.
@@samthedog2010 Sam. Maybe I could help. It's easy. You will need: 4 pieces @ 9ft long for the length. 5 pieces @ 30 inches long for the width and center brace. 8 pieces @ 34.65 in. for the legs. (each leg uses two pieces of 2x4 each) Add all the aforementioned pieces and divide the sum by 12. That's the number of feet of 2x4 you're going to need. Then, figure out the lengths of 2x4s. For example, 2x4x6 or 2x4x8 or 2x4x10 etc that will give you the most efficient cuts with minimal waste.
My rough calculation:
9ft X 4= 36ft
30in X 5= 150in (12ft 6in)
34.65in X 8= 23ft 1in
Total feet: 71ft 7in.
MOST EFFICIENT LENGTHS OF 2X4s for the project:
4 pieces 2X4X10 for the 4 pieces for the length
3 pieces 2X4X8 for the width
1 pieces 2X4X6 for the width (6ft piece for minimal waste)
4 pieces 2X4X6 for the legs
Perhaps someone else can come up with a more efficient cutting list.
@@patrickmcglashan8002 thank you. You made my life so.much easier. Going to build my first workbench from some reclaimed 2x4s from roof
The storage shelf is both shorter and narrower than the work top - how is it possible they share a dimension?
No-nonsense design taken to the next level. Seems like you have a lot of experience working alone. A clamp here, a table there. Fairly simple tools, a blessing to see someone make things without first investing 100.000 to build the workshop.
Thank you very much!
Agreed. Videos will say "DIY" then proceed to use their planer, jointer, drill press, band saw, etc.
I built this table today. I made it 8 feet long so I didn’t have to cut any length off the table top plywood or the 8ft 2x4s. I am really happy with it. It is very sturdy. My dimensions were:
Top - 96 in long x 27 inches wide
Legs - 34.5 inches
My materials were
9 - 8ft 2x4s
1 - 8x4ft 3/4 in plywood
Great video! Thanks!!
Do you have pictures
lol 8x4? that's a first
@@richj011 yes, 8X4 ft. sheet of plywood. You're welcome.
@@richj011 They were factory seconds that someone cut the wrong way. Great bargain from your closest big box store. Same with the 4x2s...
finally a work-bench made without complicated cuts and ridiculous measurements. thanks for building this! Sometimes simple just gets the job done better. Great video!
Glad you liked it!
This is my favorite, quick DIY workbench. Although his one hour will be my eight hours...but, still very doable for a beginner like me.
Yeah, my miter saw can only cut 2 2×4s at a time so cutting everything to size will take a bit but I'm confident I'll be able to get it done as well
I did in about 4.5hrs, but now I have a work bench, any others should only take 4hrs lol
I am using a Erwin hand saw I guess I'll be finishing my table by 2023.
It took me 2 hrs to prep my material for assembly.
@@theTeslaFalcon not bad!
A man simply building something functional in a straightforward and pragmatic fashion for practical use; I am not sure because I wasn't there but I'm almost certain that this is how human civilization got its start. He makes it look easy, masters of their craft usually do; those are always the ones to watch. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your skill, Dieter, and thanks for reminding us that simple is usually best in all things whenever possible.
I don't know why, but using the clamps as a temporary shelf/ holder just made me chuckle. So simple, so practical but it had never really occurred to me. Great job.
Totally agree.... I had a chuckle as well about the simplicity... why did I not think of that?
I must have seen this video a 100 times now. Love the simplicity and can't wait to make one of my own workbenches in this style. I've always liked the idea of woodworking, and the video is truly inspiring!
Awesome, thank you!
I'm going to build this in the next few days. Thanks for the great video!
Simplicity at its finest. That’s how it’s done
Made this workbench yesterday with some slight alterations. I had a bunch of 2X6 material from a demo job so I went with that instead of 2X4s. I also used a sheet of 3/4 MDF instead of plywood. Finally, I added 3" casters to the legs to move it around easier. My bench is 28"wX 78"l and 33" tall, just the right height to serve as a feed table or output table for my table saw. I have an 1.5 inch of overhang on one long side for clamping purposes. Bench took me about 3 hours to build and the 2X6 and MDF construction made it quite heavy. Overall an excellent design. Thanks for posting.
Loved the left-legged joinery clamp used at 3:42! This is great, thanks!
LOL
Bhahaha
Priceless! Literally
What is 3:42left leg joinery
Thank you. I must have watched 20 videos of building workbench. Yours sir was the most simple, clean and did not require $2000 worth of tools that average person does not have. Also I like the music and the fact there is no reason to talk much, so simple and clean. Thank you!
Wow, thanks!
The song makes this process seem quite peaceful. Meanwhile in my garage... "$&@%&$@&%$!!!"
Thanks! Your work bench video is the best on the internet. Just built my own rolling version with a thick cedar plank top.
Thank you! I looked at several other videos before deciding on this one. I liked the clean finished look and it seemed like a near beginner with the basic tools could do it... so I did it and It looks great. Now that I know how, I think I'll do another one. 😊
What I like about this work table compared to other videos of similar projects on here is it’s not ‘over engineered’ it’s on point and does what it says on the tin
Agreed, simple yet very functional. It's how I build mine and how it should be done.
reminds me of the early Mercedes; rock solid, easy maintenance, lasts a life time (and Ugly as hell according to my Alfa Romeo driving brother).
I like the fact that you have room for your feet and even shins when working up close on this bench, yet it is still braced and solid. Great video, thanks.
Thank you for having good music and not annoying stuff. And nice build !
Is this your music? What's the song name?

I watched a lot of workbench videos recently and liked this one the best. I just built a version of it today and it turned out perfect for my needs. Great video!
That's great. Glad you found it helpful.
What about put some wheels on them, would you consider this?
Be honest, it took you longer than an hour. Right?
@@smfvmd Haha, yes, I spent the weekend with it taking my time and adjusting the design a little as I went. Then I sealed it with Danish oil.
@@andrewpeters5907 You did well. It’ll take me all week, lol. Thanks for the danish oil tip.
Just built this today. Took more than an hour for me but I tend to spend half the project locating the additional tools I need or wherever I left my drill last! Turned out great and I’m adding a few modifications for some of my equipment.
Hey, this can't be right! There were no planners and jointers and hand planes and chisels and right handed single edged thing-a-ma-bob cutters used.....just some simple tools and lumber?!?!?! I don't know about this??? ( GREAT job, simple and effective! )
Yes there were, you just didn't see them on the video. You can't buy 2x4's w/ square edges like that from Lowe's or Home Depot and they certainly aren't that straight. I can assure you planers and jointers were involved. They don't have to be but they were for this table.
@@jtltet What makes you think he's buying his lumber at Lowes or Home Depot? Did it ever occur to you that this clip wasn't made in the U.S? Notice how all his measuring is being done in metric? That his name is German? Maybe they sell much better lumber in Europe.
@@jtltet No, they were not.
@@DieterSchneider, someone planed and jointed them. It may not have been you but someone did.
@@jtltet In Europe, they come like that from the store/lumber yard.
Great bench and great guitar sounds.
Simple, solid and easy to follow, this is the table for me. Thanks Dieter, great video.
I made this a few weeks ago. Turned out perfect. I really enjoyed making it also. Makes me want to consider a career change.
Built this today. It turned out great. Very easy and fun to build. Thank you.
This is the simplest table I’ve seen made. Thanks. Great video.
I was researching workbench ideas and discovered this video. Instantly subscribed to you.
This is the workbench design I am going to do! thankyou so much for showing us.
After watching video after video of all these workbench designs this is the one I've been looking for. Straight to the point and no need for fancy joinery.
We built this yesterday. We are inexperienced so it took a while to figure out measurements! Got off to a rocky start but now when I watch the video I understand more what he's doing. We decided we wanted the bench to be 34 in. high and measured the legs minus the width of the plywood (3/4 inch). So the longer 2x4 is 33 1/2 in. the shorter is 30 in. We screwed those together like he did and they were perfect. Our top is 78 x 27, our bottom shelf is 78 x 21. We built the top box like he did, stuck the legs on, flipped it over, screwed on the top, built the bottom shelf like he did, and we were done! Used 2 1/2 in screws. It came out beautiful!
Thank you so much for the measurements.
Marcee, how's the table holding up after a year? I'm kinda skeptical, due to the brief amount of time he displays that it takes to build it.
@@biggdogg35810 We love it. So sturdy. It took us more than an hour because we had no idea what we were doing and had to watch the video over and over!
I watched probably a dozen or more diy workbench videos before ultimately going with this design. I made a few modifications that fit my needs (wider and not as long, plus adding casters). Really happy with how it turned out. My mods did require buying two sheets of plywood instead of one, although I plan on adding some workshop shelving, so it’s going to get used anyways. Thanks for the vid, Dieter!
Cool, glad you found the video useful.
Love it! Quick and Easy!
of all the vids on the subject that I watched so far, this is the winner design for my needs.
Built a slightly larger version of this table and couldn't be happier with it. Thanks for sharing!
I know I'm late to the comments section...but gotta let you know... great build and beautiful music
great job..you proved ,yr are broad minded by giving measurements.thankyou.
After watching several videos on how to build a workbench, I realize this is the best one I've seen and will be rebuilding this, albeit a size smaller due to the lack of space. Direct clear line, stable and sustainable. Compliments on your work, you've got it.
PS: Wonderful music in the background, I love it. Many greetings from Germany.
Thanks, Sounds great. Glad it was helpful!
No bullshit, just a straight forward video!! Thank you sir.
Thanks a lot! Just what I needed - simple, solid, cheap. Perfect.
Edit: I love the music too. Tks

Nice, simple design. Well done! Thanks for sharing.
Nice and easy project. I love it! I like that it is long and not too wide, and that there is space under to store "stuff"!!
I've watched this video at least 4 times now and I am amazed each time. As a poster said below, no fancy tools and it came out perfectly. I hope my attempt comes out half as nice. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Just built this last week. My favourite DIY workbench. Thank you so much!!
Great to hear!
Thanks so much for posting this! This is the first time I built something like this. First time I used a miter saw. I just had miter saw, impact driver, speed square, tape measure and a pencil. This took about 2 hours and turned out great!
Nice work!
Very nice! Thanks for making this video. This is the design I have decided to build. Out of all the vids for simple workbenches, this design is my favorite!
Just made this fantastic work bench for my new man cave. Super easy and solid. Took me a couple of sessions over a weekend but no more than 4 hrs in total. Now going to make a shelving unit to match it. Thanks for posting the video Dieter - a great help!
Ed Family, how's the table holding up after a year? I'm kinda skeptical, due to the brief amount of time he displays that it takes to build it.
nice job! I really appreciate how every cut seemed to 2 or more pieces at once; not only efficient, but, ensuring matched sets. Even if a dimension is off, they're all off together, which means you might just have right angles, anyway! virtual fist bump from Maine!
Thank you. Very straightforward and easy for someone who is moderately experienced. I built it today and it’s great.
Great to hear!
Outstanding use of the leg at 3:40. Bravo!
This is almost as fast as building a workbench in Valheim!
Simple. Solid. No nonsense bla bla. Love it! Thank you bud!
Thank you very much for sharing this buddy .. it helps a lot ... I am planning on building one for my wife for her little plants and I think this will do the tricks .. plants on top and tools and other things go on the bottom... look super sturdy. awesome work man!
been watching other diy. best workbench video till now. easy, simple and fast.
What a great design. I need to build a workbench so I can start building out my shop. This one is perfect and I'll probably keep it forever. And for all you jamming about the clamps, did you notice how he used his leg once? Perfect!
That was awesome, Thank You…🤙🏼
Very simple and well made! Thank you .
Just finished one based on your design. Had some spare 2 x 4's laying around. Put casters on mine. Easy to construct. Solid.
Music is so calming. Nice bench.
I built this and added casters. I’m super pleased with it!
wow, this iw my favorite one
thanks alot ive just build this for under 100$. used 3/4 inch plywood and coated it with a polyurethane finish to make it last longer. i can't thank you enough for this video!!!
I don’t know why but I can watch this a hundred times 😎
With me its the music....lol..I love it!
I built my own bench recently. Having no experience I basically made it up as I went. I really wish I would have watched this video first. Beautiful job.
Thank you very much! I have build it today! It is an excellent design!

Really nice job….nothing too extreme just exactly what everyone needs. Thanks

Best one yet by far, well done
I just made mine with this video as a guide. Made it 310cm by 84,5 cm, with an extra set of legs in the middle. Easy and study!
Thank you Dieter! This video was very helpful when i was building my first real work bench today. It feels good!
Happy to help!

thanks for simplifying what others made so freaking complicated.
Finished mine. Kind of wish I could post a picture of it. I’m pretty proud of My work
How did you get all the measurements and how many of this size and how many of that size I can’t figure it out just from watching a video and especially since it’s in metrics or am I missing something in the posts somewhere
The best video yet. Simple and no bullshit.
This is the music every diy videos should be! Awesome contents :) subbed
Nice job. And great music. Loved it
I like this version very much. Simple, strong, makes sense. I built one this morning using this as a guide. Very pleased. Thank you for sharing.
Great to hear!
I built this table today. It took me around 6 hours. Would be a massive advantage to already have a workbench to build it on, I did most of my build on the floor which wasn’t ideal and added a lot of time. I also added wheels to the legs so I could move it around. Thanks Dieter the video was a great help. Total cost for my bench include the wheels was £110.
Thank you very much for an inspiring! Simply the best👍
Simple and beautiful. Thank you.
Very nice simple build. Quick and easy. And, as I watched the video I could see where I would make changes/additions to suit my needs. It's easy to add shelves or drawers to this design later. Thank you.
Nice tools
Simply superb tutorial, I just finished doing my table and it looks so good! You sir are an absolute king. Took me far more than 1 hour but I'm so happy with the result that I don't even care. Greetings from Chile, thank you!
Wow, thanks!
Thank you for posting this! I built it with a few minor adjustments and it is great! It is actually sturdier than I expected!
