    Today we lower the power to 200mW, and fly out low until we lose video with a variety of antennas to compare them, and test the Walksnail VRX Crosshair Xtreme Mini Mod from VAS.
    Can we take a moment to appreciate that Walksnail did 3 miles at 155(ish) feet on 200mW using the stock VRX patches and omnis?! I didn't expect that... lol 3.6 on the better antennas isn't half bad either for the altitude and low power.

    Cool test. Thanks for putting this together. The TFP is still such a solid performer. Great design.

    An interesting test. All 3 held up well given the reduced power and low level flying. The only way to do more extreme testing would be flying low behind a stand of trees over an open field, as a penetration test. Excellent editing syncing up the videos.

    Awesome and thank you. End of last year I was back and forth with Alex about the VAS Black Cannons I purchased for my WS vrx. Not sure if my customer service questions got him interested in making specific products now for the vrx. This was a good test. Shows how much bang for the buck the TFP still is. I still think all the vrx needs is a pair of good patch or helical antennas for the SMA and you can avoid replacing the included patches.

    Do you have the Walksnail VRX on a tripod and have an HDMI cable going to a monitor? Or what kind of video set up do you have?

    Have you got a video of your Walksnail ground station setup? Just curious how you've set it all up but I couldn't seem to find one. I also wonder if you're normally using an antenna tracker.

    Can you show the rest of your set up including how you get the VRX output to your goggles or are you using a monitor? I am imagining you have this on a tripod. Thank you Sir.

      Well they came in. Just installed. Fit was a little tight and the screw holes in the injection molded case seem pretty loose with the oem screws. But we’ll see how it goes. Alex has been the guy for antennas for so long I like to support him when I can

  • @IanF-FPV
    @IanF-FPV Před 9 měsíci

    Did Alex provide the center frequency that the VAS antennas were tuned too? With my VAS Black Cannons and the Foxeer Lollipop4 on the vtx I got better range switching from Ch1 to Ch5 at 1200mw. That was closer to the alleged center freq of the Lollipop 4 and Black Cannons.

      Just the specs from the website, "5300Mhz-6400MHz". I flew on CH3 which was the cleanest at the time according to the graphs in the VRX menu.

  • @hoagietime1
    @hoagietime1 Před 9 měsíci

    It seems like since they both cut out at pretty much the same spot and you were flying pretty low, there is a chance some physical thing, blocked the signal. Id be curious to see the same test at 399'?

    What are these triple fees patch antennas? I see geprc versions? Or these the amazons that go left and right hand?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Před 4 dny +1

      In short, all of them are the "right" ones... lol They are a design by Maarten Baert, you can find the details on both variations here: www.maartenbaert.be/quadcopters/antennas/triple-feed-patch-antenna/ and www.maartenbaert.be/quadcopters/antennas/triple-feed-patch-array-antenna/ There's the smaller one with less gain and a wider "pattern", and the larger array with more gain and a narrower pattern. They can be both right and left circular polarized depending on which connector you use on the back (and place a 50 ohm load on the unused one). They have a good reputation for being good antennas that perform well at a low cost. I have some of the small ones and larger ones, both work well for me. I use one or the other depending on the flight I have planned. If I'm staying closer and exploring around a bit I use the smaller ones, if I'm just flying out in one direction going long range then coming back, I'll use the bigger higher gain ones. Geprc is a good option, they come with good cables and a good dummy load. Some I've seen don't include the dummy load but a simple open circuit cover instead, which isn't ideal for the best performance. You could still get the dummy load somewhere else and use it just fine though, so I guess just shop around for a good deal... lol

    Pretty cool test, thanks! I have a question regarding your Ar Wing setup. Are you using weights to keep the correct CG with the walksnail installed?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Před 9 měsíci

      I don't have any extra weight in it right now, but I do have a relatively heavy battery as far forward as it can go. (4S3P 18650) With the pan servo and camera up front in the nose, it's just enough to get the CG good enough. It's a little far back, farther back than I would maiden one with, but it works with the plane all trimmed and tuned... With it a bit farther back like it is I picked up a little efficiency too, I'm guessing because it needs a little bit less reflex to fly level, so less drag. I wouldn't want it any farther back than it is though. When I had analog in there I did have to use some lead weight up front if I wasn't using an HD camera of some sort in the nose.

    Triple feed patches FTW, only putting 1 on the TX/RX sma is already such an improvement, stock patches aren't bad but low DB, similar to the TBS patch I think, without checking Id say 5 db

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The built in VRX patches are 7.6db according to the user manual. I've been quite happy with those and the 9.4db triple feed patches on top. I do have a pair of the higher gain TFP also, but haven't flown with them yet. I haven't really needed to, and like the wider coverage with the lower gain ones... lol

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Před 9 měsíci

      I'm using a currently not released beta version. (34.xx.xx) I'm part of a group that's testing firmware for Walksnail right now, and like what we've seen so far. The next release should be good. I don't have any info on when it will go public, but I'd guess fairly soon. There's some new features and fixes that people have asked for, besides what seems like good performance so far.

    VAS antennas are always consistent quality.
    I’m using all of their antennas for crossfire on 900mhz, 1.2 RHCP for video and 433for telemetry. Flying 25km+ on most days..

    These are very cool but I don't know if I'm going to purchase these I had some custom 10 turn helicals made buy an antenna maker in Italy they work amazing with DJI I have a feeling they're going to work just as good with my walksnail
    You never know I like to buy a lot of shit so I might end up with these anyhow
