I Never Expected the Range and Penetration I Have With this Receiver... Walksnail Avatar Review

  • I decided to take the Walksnail Avatar video receiver for a spin at my standard spot for testing range and penetration. I was very impressed with how well it performed here. I was able to hit areas of this spot no other video system has been capable of reaching.
Sorry for the spotty audio. They recently took out some trees by the road and I wasn't expecting it to be that loud now.

I prefer the 720p100hz mode at 50Mbps because it gives the lowest delay. 25Mbps should be better for scouting though since smaller RF bandwidth is more stable. I like the option to run this on my HDZero goggles, but obviously I run HDZero 99% of the time

Got the Avatar VRX December, did a lot of testing, for me it performed significantly better than my system at the time (O3) and I sold the Goggle 2 and all my VTXs, and switched completely, for a short time.
The system is great, for what it is, and from the retransmission systems it has by far the best flight feel and consistency. I use 720p100 exclusively and high bit rate when within LOS and standard for everything else. Power doesn’t matter too much it works great on 25 even (I use the 1S at 350) (on a 45 minute autonomy 4”) and can fly basically my whole neighbourhood, with good antennas though, otherwise it won’t make it through more than 7-8 houses, ask me how I know) and at 1200 I can go literally anywhere.
I got the HDZero goggle at the very end of December and by the middle of January I literally progressed in my flying more in those two weeks than the last two years, that’s when I found I am extremely latency sensitive and that my brain just couldn’t deal with my previous video systems, thus the huge gain in skill, when unencumbered.
I have since been flying primarily HDZero, especially the Runcam90 (with a proper lens, stock is borderline unflyable for me) followed by analog for the ultra light stuff (I really struggle flying analog sometimes, because of the flashes) and Avatar for the exploration, scouting, and long range.
    That’s my happy combination!
I use the Avatar VRX on a tripod connected to my HDZero goggle as it’s way too heavy and uncomfortable hanging it on the goggle. Plus I use diner plate/helical antenna only (no omni) and penetration and image is always great.
I also run RHCP on everything for the same reasons! 👍🏻

    • @tomymoonly
      @tomymoonly Před rokem

could you give me your plate setup on the vrx? i m trying to get my hand on a WS vrx for only long rang stuff but i dunno what antenna combo i should use.

@@tomymoonly Two triple Feed Patch Array on Ant1 + 2, 7 turn helical on Ant3, 5 turn helical on Ant4. That’s it. Cheap and simple.
      Works extremely well!
Especially if you have someone to help you move the tripod, it’s great 👍🏻 I do kick the tripod with my foot to move it when alone and flying parallel to myself, but this is rare, and only when exploring massive properties. Most of the time I’m flying away from myself and not around myself in a giant circle 😜 but that does happen occasionally.
If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

About which lens for Runcam90 are You actually talking about? Thanks for answer in advance :)

    • @lemonsquareFPV
      @lemonsquareFPV Před rokem +2

@@jarekdomanski7985 The easiest and cheapest good lens is the HDZero Nano camera upgrade lens. You can get it directly from HDZero or anywhere where their products are sold.
Or use your favourite M8 lens from your racing cameras that you are already used to Runcam, Foxeer… Just make sure it has sn IR filter as a lot of the Foxeer Predator5 cameras have the filter on the sensor, as opposed to the lens.
But the Nano upgrade lens is inexpensive and available everywhere, so I use that most of the time.
      For the consistency and availability.
Plus it’s a great lens with really good colours and contrast and no distortion (the opposite of the lens it comes with)
They had to keep the price of the camera down and unfortunately put a cheap and crappy lens, but it’s an easy fix, so I’m not mad 😜

I fly 720p standard bit rate at 200 to 500 usually.
Occasionally switch to 1080p high bitrate to remind my self of how good it can look.
Mostly free style proximity 720p or cruise a new spot at 1080p.
    TrueRC stubbies and Patches.
Switched over from analog and wow.
Even fly it in a 4" with the nano vtx and cam on a racetrack: 25mw standard bitrate 720p.
Coming from analog I can finally fly together with DJI pilots and not get pushed away from interference.
We only keep in mind to warn each other plugging in and make groups to space out channels if going for the 8ch settings.
Haven't flown HDzero while others are flying Walksnail because I'm the only nut that flies both systems on one day.
V1 vtx tends to just die for no reason.
V2 is on the shelf waiting to replace a v1 that died after a really bad involuntary run in with a fence pole.
Lollipop 4+ work great with the TrueRC antenna's.
On my 4" I have a hglrc hammer LHCP I'm combo with the nano vtx and cam. That nano vtx is a tank compared to the fullsize v1 vtx, it's survives hard crashes on a racetrack and freestyle crashes on hard surfaces.
All VTX's are powered trough 9v/10v from the FC, or 5v for the nano.
    4s.
I use the Fatshark Dominator Walksnail goggles. First order at rotor riot and all is good. They had them in stock all the time and service is great, delivery to Europe took less then a week. Ordered before Walksnail really took of with the sales and before the VRX unit was launched, so no VRX on my HDzero goggles, I just pack them both and see how many DJI pilots are there to pick my goggles.
HDzero on the racetrack gets interference badly from them, Walksnail: no problem.

use the true rc patches that screw onto the side sma's (like you would use on analogue with an angled adapter) rather than those that clip on the front. That way you can mount the ws vrx on the front easier more securely with slightly less leverage(weight) on the face. I only ever use 25mb at 700 I've done everything with that setting. flew so far 1.5 miles on that no issues per say. Also I've flown with a mix of lchp and rhcp and had pretty darn good performance. That 1.5 mile run was done with lhcp stock patches and rhcp omni on the vrx and rhcp on the quad had perfect video no issues.

I like the lower latency hdzero. But I still want higher image quality sometimes. I can have both and only pack one set of goggles with this setup.

I was thinking about building a drone specifically to live in my car with this walksnail RX or hdz rx. Mounting the antenna's on the outside somewhere and plumbing the HDMI to a screen on the dash instead of goggles. This way anytime I see something cool on the road I can have a scout flight. Probably with a LION battery since I'm a little sketched on keeping lipo's in the car always :P

I was thinking of a similar idea if you want to share thoughts or collab on it. I want to make an x8 capable of carrying nv/thermal sensors. Probably using a cinelifter frame. HMU if you’re interested.

Haha inside the perfect bad weather spot. I was thinking some antenna with magnetic bases to attach on the outside and pipe a cable in through the window. Just need to extend the antenna correctly for clean signal (what im researching).

I just got Walksnail vrx (haven’t flown it yet) for my HDZero goggles. Based on all the info the best setting for power is 700mw as over that it is not stable.
Always use high frame rate on HDZero googles as it can do the 100fps.
Finally use 25mb s as there doesn’t seem that much improvement in 50mb mode.

You’ve got to start somewhere. Don’t worry about having all of the latest and greatest. Focus on getting the best results with the gear you have. Then slowly expand that gear as needed. Keep doing that as long as you enjoy it. I hope that helps.
