    This makes me appreciate HDZero even more. There's no compression loss in the grass and trees that turns them into a featureless green mass. I need that detail, especially in racing, because it's crucial information about my altitude. It's harder to gauge how high I am if I'm flying over a muddy sea of fuzzy green blocks.

    • @Vousie

    Ask your local race director if you can fly walksnail at the race! Lots of places won't let you fly it because it negatively impacts other racers and most popular timing system can't accurately track the weird power outputs. Transmitting from the goggles makes it really difficult to integrate in a race environment.

    • @geordil
      @geordil Před 9 měsíci +3

      It sucks to have new guys show up with these systems to a race and having to tell them they have to sit super far away from everyone else and their lap times won't be accurate. It's very discouraging for them after having spent however long just getting the drone to fly and finally getting confident enough to come out to a race. We always try to accommodate them, but these things never get mentioned in videos like this so they have no idea

    Thanks for the review. I was torn between the older 1S vtx and this new v3 one. I am a little reluctant to buy the older one because both you and madstech bricked those vtxes during review. Can you test out the durability improvements of this new VTX? Especially if we can limit the output power, remove the casing and have a more durable 1S vtx for 1-2S toothpicks?
    Also is the camera that comes with this vtx a newer variant? The document says it's supposed to have better night mode noise reduction.
    And you're right.
    With HDZero, I used to be frustrated trying to watchout for thinner things like electric wires, thin branches etc..
    With Walksnail, I seem to be worrying about latency spikes.. I am noticeably more slower/cautious with my walksnail build. I have been trying to avoid tinier gaps etc.. but that may also be because i only have one walksnail build and i don't want to wreck it just yet. Or maybe because i fly walksnail in 16:9 mode mostly..

    Really cool they made this system work in fixed latency... But it looks notably worse than HDZ... and in some scenarios even worse than analog... somehow for fixed latency analog is still a really strong link - especially if you account for the compactness, price and robustness of this system in comparison to the digital divas ;)

      If someone has shown me the WS 540p footage and I didn't know any better, I would've said that might be the best analog video I've ever seen.
      Meanwhile, I've watched tons of 540p HDZ videos and recently got the nano 90 camera for myself and although 540 is a noticeable drop from 720, at no point have I ever confused HDZ footage for analog and that speaks volumes.

  • @Sugalime3D_FPV

    In general, I think it would be good if every system (DJI, WN, HD0) had these 2 modes. Variable latency for slowly exploring the location in the best image quality, and the fixed latency for sbang tricks, bando and racing with the best latency... I think most people like to do both...

  • @Greg__K
    @Greg__K Před 9 měsíci +1

    The overall latency of the Avatar system is relatively low, but you really do feel it when it jumps around. After flying a lot of analog this summer and going back to WS, it’s the variable latency that kills the fun a bit for me.
    I just updated the firmware and can’t wait to gives this a try! I’ve been waiting for this for a while now.
    I just watched some of the HDzero dvr, and honestly they both look similar quality. The HDzero breakup is probably the hardest thing for me to get past. Maybe it’s worse when watching the dvr on a monitor? Kinda like analog.

    @kevinthealienfpv Před 9 měsíci +2

    Being honest, this doesn't get me any more excited for Walksnail, but it does get me excited wondering if HDZero could introduce a mode that retransmits missing data packets to improve range at the expense of latency.
    They've already shown the awesome versatility and performance of HDZero and I would love to see a "quality" mode.

    You didn't say anything about the camera - it has 4:3 native sensor it that nano size so it's more preferable for racers to see more on the top and the bottom of screen. AND, it's race mode, not cpt.Vanover freestyle mode, not fancy beautiful joy mode to perfect see every branches it the dark behind your barn - it's for race, when gates are clearly visible from the space and it's pretty enough for it. So it's not a cons.

  • @Clickmaster5k

    Sounds like what you might want cold be really environmentally dependent because of how the compression works. For example, If you dont have branches to worry about. HDZ is trying to give both too with the 1080p mode.

    • @mythrillium2

      The problem with that is between 720p/1080p, the SoC needs to update the display resolution on the goggles, and they straight up restart when going into race mode. Could be wrong about the race mode reboot tho, that's what I saw from another video last night about the new firmware

I also have some switchbacks Running HDZ and i cannot see any difference in latency or "Feeling locked in" between them. The only difference i see is HDZ colors are better and 540pwalksnail video clarity is far better than HDZ 720p. IF walksnail keeps this up i may start racing with them over HDZ.

    I only run 720/100hz on my walksnail goggles with 1s VTX/cam. Ive always felt like my DJI v2 goggles with vista and 720/120hz felt way more consistent but i hated the weight and size of goggles/vtx. If this can run on my 1s kit the only complaint ill have left is the size of the lenses which are the smallest in industry. To help see better ive removed the face plate and put velcro directly on the goggles which did help but not quite enough. It also lets a little light in around the sides now but im hoping some wedges or a 3d print wedge shape with velcro glued to it will help.

    Gonna wit for this v3 to be available and try again ( or else it'll go in a small fixed wing).

    Sure the HDzero race with a nano 90 will be better for racing, but a smaller quad with the WS V3 put on 540p mode... With the penetration benefit... Think caddx is on to something for freestylers that use an action cam for footage, but want the fixed latency.
    500mw will be enough for most, I hardly use 700mw anyway as I fly proximity but there's enough trees and walls that need the penetration to be good.

    A big issue with DJI was not the latency ... Race organizers don't really care about what latency the racer's themselves have. They care about the systems playing nice with each other. With DJI, the big issue was that the Goggles would interfere with other racers in the line. Is this also an issue with Walksnail?

    Fixed latency and changing the frequencies to be more Raceband-like are not the only issues for racing.
    Timing systems miss laps with DJI, as it has something to do with blips of public channel. Does WS not suffer from this?

    I really don't think you feeling higher latency with standard mode (even when the output doesn't show much difference) is placebo.
    Way more likely that the walksnail goggles are not reporting latency accurately. And even if it were "accurate", they could have 60 fps reported at only, say, 10 Hz, which means each report is 6 frames put together and if they've just used averaging, then the latency in those spots might actually be a set of "23, 22, 23, 23, 100" or something that averages out to 33ms which then ends up being what they report. But that one frame at 100ms latency - and usually right in a sharp turn where you most need low latency - would definitely affect you.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Před 9 měsíci

      Not to presume, but if you're seeing horizontal lines, IMO you're putting the DJI pilot too close to the analog pilot. DJI goggles transmit, so like any transmitter, it doesn't matter what frequency you're on, if you're up in their face, you will get stomped. Analog works the same way. The DJI pilots need to be about 15' from any other pilot who is in the air and the lines go away (in my experience). Where I have seen this issue is if the race organizer puts the DJI pilots in the same seats as analog and therefore they are 2' away from the analog pilots.

    High bit rate is likely disabled because it uses 2 channels to get the wider bandwidth. And JB can you stop misinforming people about WS and DJI latency being due to them restransmitting video frames. No realtime video system does this! @@JoshuaBardwell apologies, in retrospect I was out of place there to suggest you're spreading misinformation. Thanks for following up with Walksnail on that and providing clarity, and also the humility with which you've handled my critism. This really does come as a surprise to me because coming from an communications perspective, realtime voice/video streaming protocols like RTP are generally transported over UDP (which unlike TCP does not retransmit) because they prefer low latency over reliability. While protocols like RTP can themselves implement retransmission on a per usecase basis, in a bandwidth constrained wireless application like FPV I wouldn't expect that to be the case. Especially given the fact that the system adaptively reduces video quality/bitrate (I.e. the smearing) to respond to reduced bandwidth due to reduced link quality. Retransmitting failed higher quality video frames over a link with reduced bandwidth makes no sense to me. But I guess we're just going to have to trust that the person at Walksnail actually knows what they're talking about. 😅
