I hope everyone's having a great summer! In this month's episode, we're checking out Stardew Valley and analyzing it to figure out what makes a sandbox game successful. What do you think makes this genre so much fun?

I don’t know why I like this game but I can’t stop.
Me: “one more day”
Reality: year 2 begins
same dude, I just played for 3 days and I'm almost finished with 2nd year spring.....
Well great again played 5 hours but not getting boring. Got 40k today yeyy
Mikk Riive 250k at least I can use quarantine as an excuse..
@@Popcorn-xf2wk yes i made 200k with summer
*laughs in 1.2m per 3 days.
Being in my 50s, games like this keeps me relaxed.
I needed to read this. At 30 I've come to unreasonably feel "too old" for these type of games. Thank you!
Damn
I wanna be like you when im 50
@@Loffeleif Im 29 and just started the game.
@@HarmacyKorine no offense but I just farted
@@Loffeleif You're never too old to game.
I was so obsessed with my farm that I started dreaming about going down the mines and discovering an ancient civilisation below coupled with a few dwarves.
Wow! That is cool, I'm kind of jealous.....
Lol good one
That's like the tetris effect, which is badass on its own
You should learn creative writing and do it as a hobby on the side. Sounds like a cool imagination you have there!
Concerned Ape actually said the mines originally had boss fights and entire goblin cities etc but he scrapped them because he thought they wouldn't suit the game. He said it in a twitter or reddit reply to a comment once
*Gives Shane Pizza for his birthday*
Shane: "This is so amazing thank you, you're so great!"
*Talks to Shane immediately after*
Shane: "Who are you? I don't know you, never talk to me again I hate everything you stand for."
That’s Shane for ya XD
Get him drunk about 30 times, and he’ll come around.
100th
Lmaoooo
Rip logic
when I first played stardrew valley it felt like a game you could play in small bits every now and then.
somehow I ended up doing the exact opposite: I played it without a break for like 4 days and then never touched it again for some reason :D
I didn't have my sleeping meds so the first day it came out I played it for like well over 24 hours, my vision was pixelated, not even kidding.
Same
So..... it's worth it?
LGiver play it
@LGiver I feel like i could relate to what he just said. I think whenever u start playing it, you just CANT stopp. It makes you so addicted that the next time you wanna open to play the game, you have to give it ur all for the next 5-6 hours; therefore, u dont want to play it again unless u know u can be commited to it for a long time.
“the neighbors are cheery”
shane: am i a joke to you SIR
Oh he's a nice guy, just shy.
and HALEY like Shane is super cheery and cute when you get closer (Sebastian too), but HALEY she only gets better, not nice. I can't stand how fake Jodi is either.
I laughed my ass off when I went to talk to Shane and he said "Why are you talking to me I don't know you" then I looked at the heart meter and it was 2 hearts. Yep definitely don't know you

I’m married to him and he’s rlly sweet now but I agree he was an a-hole at first

IT IS ON SWITCH
Its on mobile too
@@1kulik You can't play it without internet for some reason on the switch
so lets conclude from all those comments below, u have to be chill while playing this game, u dont have to run after all tasks man, u dont have to complete the community needs so quickly, just chill, everything will be okay, let the passion flow up. why dont you try a normal life? water the crops in morning, collect artisans in 9 am, and go fishing till the dusk came down! then rest your dah by drop at Stardrop Saloon, and enjoy few drinks? Does this sounds normal? Dont get involved by all quests (although you know how to pass it) just chill, let your mind enjoy the game, and dont be obsessive about all things in this big games. got it?
actually this game, allow us to choose our own way to enjoy (this is endless game, you will get nothing after complete all the tasks dont it?) so this stuff didnt force us to do all tasks, but choose the right tasks, to fulfill the part of our way in this game.
I'm perfectionist and i can't let my mind......rest, god i hate myself.....
See guys... Even the FBI plays Stardew Valley
Someone wrote an essay to protect their favourite game lmao
That's what kept me away from playing it for long. Started this month, enjoyed for some days (rushing every single thing), then realized I just couldn't handle the slow pace. It's an amazing game, but you do need to like the pace and peace. I'm more into a Battlefield.
"Sandbox games aren't for people looking to show off their abilities or take on a grand challenge."

Due to quarantine and a good friend who decided to buy this game for me... I am now really enjoying this game. Just started playing today.
Same
It is a great Google Play game too, it's a premium game so you have to outright buy it, but it's probably the best premium game on the Android Market if you ask me.
Why play Farmville when Zygna only wishes they were this good without pay to win mechanics?
Another honorable mention would be the Phoenix Wright games on Android too. Fully fleshed out games that are definitely worth the buy
Mad Maxim same I’m already halfway through fall year 1
@@juelcm5933 that's awesome! I just started summer lol but I bought myself a new rod and spinner bait. You gotta treat yourself sometimes lol.
@@jasongibson1225 Thank you for the tip. I will definitely have to check that out.
Criminally underrated channel. Keep up the good work man!
Thank you!
I absolutely agree with you.
I have over 1,000 hours in Stardew Valley. Every time I start a new farm, it's a bit different. I enjoy playing because I CAN play the way I want... and I can change what that means every time I play again. The town is full of all sorts of drama... but you have to get to know the characters better than on a casual level.
SPOILER ALERT
Shane is suicidal and tries to kill himself. Pam has a sad history that you find out about as you get to know her. Leah left her ex in the city and he won't leave her alone. Sebastian is trying to make a living so he can get away from Demetrius. Caroline and the Wizard had an affair and Abigail is the result. Every person has something and if you want to get to know them, you eventually learn it all.
END SPOILERS
I have never become bored with this game and it has often allowed me to relax and forget about all the things that I have to contend with in my life. I'm old (nearly 70) but I've enjoyed games since before I bought my first game machine... a Super NES. I still have it and all of the games... and they all still work and I play them every now and then... but Stardew Valley is where I go most often.
- Lately I've been watching the new Animal Crossing and am thinking that it's another game I might play for a long time, but I have to buy the Switch to do that... and I'm wondering if the game will give me enough time and pleasure to make that purchase worthwhile. I've looked at other Switch games, but not one of them is appealing to me, so Animal Crossing would have to be a game I play a lot to make the price worthwhile.
- Although I bought Minecraft, I never could get into it... mostly because I don't like the graphics. I gave up on Facebook a long time ago, but I did play Farm Town (not Farmville) when I was on there and I enjoyed it until it began to be more about "inviting friends" than it was about playing a simple farming game. That felt more like an MLM to me than a game, so I quit.
Well there's a video of an 88 year old lady with hundreds of hours in the game. Also I'd be surprised if you couldn't enjoy Super Mario Odyssey or Breath of the wild. You ever play Legend of Zelda Link to the past? One of my favorites. If you like that game you should enjoy Breathe of the Wild. And if you liked Super Mario 64 you'll love Odyssey. On the other hand, if you hated both those game....well, then the Switch don't have much for ya unless you don't like 2d Mario.
@@tomhill3248 Thanks Tom. I've seen that lady, Shirley Curry. She has a CZcams channel and is doing very well with it. She plays Skyrim and she has a lot of fun. I played Zelda Link to the Past on my SNES and enjoyed it. My sister had the 2 Link games for the NES and we played them together when I went to visit. I never did like Mario or games like that although my sister and I sometimes played Mario Cart when I went to her place. The more I've seen of Animal Crossing, the more I think I'd put hundreds of hours into it and love it. So I'll probably get a Switch... but they are quite scarce right now, so it could be awhile. That's okay... I'm patient and I have to save for it anyway. I'll check Breath of the Wild out when I get a Switch. Thanks again.
@@2CraftySeniors In your case, since you don't like any Mario, 2d or 3d(they play very differently) I'd say get a switch on sale since it will likely be just a Breathe of the wild and animal crossing machine. In the meantime check out these series called Harvest Moon and Rune factory. You might like those. If you like Mario Kart you might also like SRB2k. But you need some technical know-how to get that game. And you are very welcome sir.
Shane needs to hurry up and do it in my playthrough. Hate the guy. He's so mean. I cracked him with a slingshot lol.
Ebba Lytle damn...spoiler alert 😂 not sure why I kept reading as much as I did but I stopped after Abigail
"The villagers are cheery."
About that...
You mention around 2:18 how nice it is to pop in Stardew and just slow down.
Thing is, the first 4-5 times I've legit tried to play Stardew Valley, I never got past Fall of the first year. There's so much to do in the game that it always felt a bit overwhelming. I'd start to farm, then get a fishing pole and try to fisu, then get told about the community center...so I try to fill that up asap, then the mines open up and now I want to get down to the bottom as quick as I can. On top of the seasonal events, keeping NPC happiness up, filling up the museum, upgrading tools, and doing the Adventurers guild stuff.
I legit got burnt out. Every save I started, I'd get to month 2 or 3 of the first year, and get tired and just quit. I always felt like I HAD to do everything as quickly as I could, and I'd get irritated if I missed something one month for the community center, or didn't have enough money to buy a certain event-specific item.
I only recently started a new save after months of not playing. Figured with the newest updates, I might as well give it another shot. I'm only at the end of Spring on year 1, but I'm having more fun. I've decided to chill out. If I miss something, I miss it. No big deal, it'll be there next year. Like, I didn't even think to plant green beans, so I'm gonna miss them this year in the community center. But oh well.
I'm also not rushing to do things constantly. Some days I'll just say fuck it and make it a lazy day where I just fish junk items for the recycler or something.
Way more fun and relaxing this way.
Just got the game last week, so far been addicted.
Don't usually play games like this one!
I've been pretty chilled considering how overwhelming the game is. Just relax and do whatever the fuck you want! Try not to read many tutorials on the game I guess as that adds more to the overwhelming element just relax and have fun that's what I'm doing. If ye miss something? All good you can do it next year! Time is really on you're hands and how you want to spend it!
I spent a whole day just organzing my chests no biggy, although wish I can take that and apply that in real life.
Hope you're having more fun now more then ever dude!
Honestly just farm until winter and then go mining since you can’t grow crops in winter
@@KarminUwU mate just double down in the mayonnaise market, that shit slaps
By the quality alone I assumed this channel had a couple hundred thousand subscribers, this is insane content
Wait I'm sorry, you have only 801 subs?? This video was great quality, you deserve more my dude! New sub
Thank you very much, Tiffany!
Yeah this video is better quality than channels with 1,000x the subs.
I loved the relaxed at "your own pace" feel of this game. Thats why I always end up min maxing the hell out of it like my life depends on it.
kudos to the maker! you're so underrated! the quality, sound and the overall video is AMAZING! you should have hundreds or even millions of subs! earned the sub amazing vid!
Loved this! Great summary of exactly why these games draw so many of us in. Glad I came across your channel
I've been playing farming games since I discovered Harvest Moon on the GBC. I went to a funeral 600 miles away and this game (along with Pokemon) went with me. I had maxed everything out. I was like 9 then, but I still liked more hardcore games like Zelda as well as games like Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons. Sometimes you need a chill game to play just to have some variety in your life, something you don't have to worry about screwing up a mission or quest.
This channel is amazing and exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’ve often wished a channel like this existed. Liked and subscribed! Keep up the good work!
Remember me man, I'm your ~1,500 something subscriber. Soon, I know you'll get to a million.
Ha ha, I'll remember you man. Whether or not I ever reach "a million" subs, I appreciate your support!
One word: Escapism
Picked this up a week ago and have one of the songs stuck in my head already
Exactly what I wanted to see when I came to this video ! Thanks so much ! Subscribed!
I've put over 200 glorious hours into this time. I might play it today. 10/10, one of the best relaxing games to play!
i picked up this game on steam for $9.99 and it's been my best purchase ever thanks to this review
Was debating buying this game, now me and my girlfriend have both decided to get it! Amazing video and there wasn’t really any spoilers it was just a genuine video about it and why it’s a good game. You definitely deserve more subscribers and it wasn’t until I saw someone else’s comment about it that it made me realise how low it was (I easily thought you were in the hundred thousands!). Keep up the great work, you have yourself a new sub :)
Great idea for a gaming series! Keep going and I think the views will come
honestly great channel and quality. when i first watched the video, i thought you were gonna be a youtuber with 100s of thousands of subs, then i went to like it and saw the likes and subs. very underrated channel, nice video!
Thank you very much!

1:51, it was at that moment that it occurred to me that after all this time, I had never actually seen the guy before, lol!
Hey man, great concept for a channel. I hope I get to see you make it big!
What a great video and underrated channel, glad to see such professional content!
Thank you! I appreciate your comment.
Subbed bro you are going to get a bigger channel in time that's for sure just carry on :D You sold the experience to me and I was looking for that. Thank you for this content I found so useful!!
Perfect game for being quarantined!
i only wish there was an update to the journal for custom entries to track what you were doing, after a few years it gets exhausting to remember everything you're up to and god forbid you take a break only to come back and completely forget.
Wow. Great content sir, especially with 1.6k subs you’re SO underrated 👍🏽‼️
*I’m buying the game asap lol*
i am obsessed with this game. it is so relaxing and you don’t feel pressured to do all the quests. the people are interesting and so far seem to be complex and each have their own individual story. the music is cute and makes you happy! perfect game for quarantine!
I think sandbox games give the player a sense of conttol over the environment. You don't necessarily see this type of thing in non-sandbox games.
I am pretty late, but this is a bloody good video man, you earned a new sub today, quality.
This is the very first video I watch of this channel. And it's an insta subscribe. A very well educated review. Keep up the good work. 😁
Wow - that was an amazing review. Great channel! Subscribed!
Quality content, great review, subscribed
The way me and my friend literally have ‘stardew days’ where we spend a whole day playing the game.
We once played it on a 4 hour train journey….that journey felt like 30 minutes because we were playing stardew the entire time it didn’t feel like time was passing.
Thanks for the video! I came here cuz I was curious about the new Animal Crossing game. Looked it up and didn't seem quite my style and led me to look into Stardew Valley. Time to start playing today XD
Great video essay. I just bought it and I'm looking forward to a new addiction haha.
love your channel man, super cool stuff!
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the vids!
I just realized I've been playing this game to win, even though i wanted to relax like the story wants me to. thank you for the help with this revelation.
The size of the farm plots gave me claustrophobia for some reason.
bro I'm addicted to this valley 😭
Wow, you deserve as many subs as other super popular review channels. High quality content, you earned a sub from me
this game is so deep despite looking so simple , I'm on year 5 and I still have goals to do ,got a garden full of pots with delux retaining soil so I don't have to water them then got a full 80 beehives in bottom of my island farm ,didn't even know I was gonna do such thing before starting 5th year, you would think after you are done with community center ,there is nothing else to do but then goals just keep flowing in this game then you keep adding mods and this game almost never ends ,some of the mods that actually truely shine after community center completion, is automation ,better junimo huts, lookup anything ,fast animations and the new expansion mod ridge side cliff village which adds a whole new town and people without messing with your main game like sve ,ofcourse I got like 30 more awesome mods too but some of these mods actually make the game last forever without getting bored
GREAT VIDEO! Quality comparable to few 100k subs channel... You sir deserve way more credit and subs!
Me being a fan of harvest moon when my cousin introduced this game
*Oh shit here we go again*
The HM game on Gamecube was super good, and I always missed the mix of farming, passage of time and social life/romance etc. Has any HM game been good since?
Does it has same level of excitement? Im thinking to buy this but if its same with harvest moon im not buying because i still play harvest moon on my pc😄
I hope you get way more views and subs this was amazing

Underrated af channel. Remember when you have 10 mil!
Now at patch 1.5 which I did'nt even KNOW was a thing till I checked recently, the man's a god damn LEGEND and old saves almost never break from a new patch, can you see 1.6 over there? I see a sunset coming in 2022, we love you CA!!! Never give up on this game :)

Very Nice video, you have earned yourself a sub! I thought you were Gonna have like a couple of *very high number* K subs. But nope here we are with a bit more than 700+. Gladly suprised! Good job
I was on break from this game for a year and half, got bored one day and heard there was a new update jumped back and went from year 3 and half to year 5 and it felt natural like nothing changed
Juat watched this video and some of your videos, the videos are really enjoyable. You got a new subscriber!
Thank you! Welcome to the community!
What a great video, congrats! Subbed!
Thanks for the vid i was looking for a vid about the game because it's on sale and you just got a sub
Thank you! I'm glad the video could help.
I think the reason why I like and play this game even more than animal crossing is just because there’s so much to do! You can farm, you can explore caves, you can start a family, you can build a town to perfection, it never ends! All of that combined with the fact that every cpu is different makes this game 10 times bigger then animal crossing ever could be. It’s also kinda pathetic how one man can make a better and more fleshed out game then fricken NINTENDO!!!
Exactly that’s what lead me to start playing it !
Come on boys! Spread the word we're getting this channel 20k subscribers
Thank you for this video , I never heard of this game before until I saw it mentioned on Reddit and the game kinda reminded me of MapleStory, I game I used to play a while back but Stardew Valley looks like just the game I need, this year has been very stressful for me and this games looks very peaceful
I'm sorry to hear about your stress, it's really been a crazy year. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you can find a game (Stardew Valley or otherwise) that can help you de-stress a bit!
Good presentation and I love Stardew. You seem like pro blogger who does not need to do circus or stand-up in your videos - Subbed.
Very good explanation thank you!
10 hour trip coming up... I know what I’m doing for 10 hours straight 😃✋🏽
I’ve seen a lot of people talking about this game in my discord server saying it was really good. When I heard it was on switch I was ecstatic since I haven’t touched my switch in like a month and after watching this video I’m definitely going to get this game since it’s really not a lot of money for such a well made and good game.
As an FPS gamer who used to play Minecraft. This was an amazing experience. I read about this in a book called "Blood Sweat And Pixels" (amazing book btw) and it sounded interesting. Ever since my Gran always gave me money on Easter, Christmas and so on I decided to use that money to get this game on steam. I often got stressed playing FPS games and this game was relaxing and addictive for me. I immediately got flashbacks to my Minecraft days and I am now addicted. I highly recommend this game to any gamer.
Edit: tip for beginners. Fish while your crops grow and get better rods. It is a good way to get money starting out.
Sandbox games are pretty much the only games I play :) Great analysis!
I love Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness , so I figured that I’d like this game. The controls are kinda weird if you play via laptop, but I like the game overall.
I wish story of seasons pioneers of town had the drama and more adult scenes like this game.
The whole point of a sandbox games to create your own there is no just a beginning and even when you reach the end the desire to continue is what makes sand boxes so fun.
I love your content :) new subscriber here from Philippines.
Really enjoyed this video!! Might have to buy the game haha
Man this is underrated
Amazing that one guy, Eric Barone, built this entire game (programming, graphics, music) in 4 years.

When I first played Stardew Valley, I almost did not sleep and finished one whole year in the game. I was scared of myself. It seems like I could not leave it.
Very well made and said, especially about the psychological warfare with micro-transactions

I'm so hooked on this game. Once I start playing I'm trapped. Truly the best game ever
Good video. Subbed.
to me the thing thats so great about this game, is the massive nostalgia for the Harvest moon games it gives me.
i still prefer Harvest moon in some aspects. but stardew valley certainly expanded upon the ideas of that game.
i still think Harvest moon has the better characters and a better map though.
also multiplayer, the fact you can play this with a total of 4 people is awesome.
i was playing hm and got bored coz i feel like something is missing so i look for a new sandbox game then stardew valley pop up i said to myself oh great another harvest moon. oh boy i was very wrong
I bought this game two days ago and I already have at least 12 hours in

Its the orgasm when you feel after looking after ur crops for a whole month with a frickin default watering can and sell like 300 crops of goddamn melons to the mayor that secretly comes at night time to snoop around my farm, followed by a market summuary screen...
This is a good video. Your views are criminally low. I hope you grow more in the future cos you deserve it.

Pre-paid for the game before it came out...I had only watched a few beta testing...I was looking for a farming game, as I have enjoyed playing that kind of game now and then...I have not stopped playing this game...even now I will just jump on this game for the fun of it...
