  • Last month I had 3 trucks that had DEF added to the fuel tank. It does not take much to wipe out the complete fuel system. We also had one that had gasoline added that lost compression. They did not authorize tear down so I can not say what failed for sure on that one.

    I almost threw up when I dumped 3 gallons into my fuel tank two weeks ago. I had to start it for just about 5 seconds so I could put it in neutral and start it down hill to roll in front of my work shop. Well I dropped the full tank of fuel ( ouch $120 worth) and drained it. Washed it out with garden hose real good. The pickup pump and lines and fuel filter on the tank. Installed it and added 3 gal of power service and a gallon of Power service 911. Mixed with 5 gal of fresh fuel. Drove it for a while then added 5 more gallons. Drove it 230 miles then added a full tank. Kept adding Power Service 1 gal per full fuel tank. Drove it another 300 miles then changed both fuel filters. Cut them open and let them dry for a few days. Not one spec of crystal any where on any of either filter. I guess I lucked out.
    On a side note I did it twice before on my 2011 6.7. That was at 45k miles..Only a qt or so. Just drained the first filter every few miles then changed the filters out while adding lot's of power service for a while. Traded it in at 165k and still running smooth. No issues there.
    On a side note. Why didn't I just call Ford to come and tow it while it was just in the tank and I hadn't started it at all? Had too many important things to be done the next day and 1 week after and another 1 week after and another 1 week after. I went for it. At that point I didn't care what happed to the truck. Either it was going to run and do that all or frig it.
    I now have a locking gas cap that should help.

      Wow that was a hell of a gamble but looks like you came out on top. We all love to say that we’d do the right thing and get the tow and do it right, but under pressure and in a pinch it’s always “welllllll maybe it’ll be fine if I just run it for a couple seconds”. Whew, I dunno if I’d have the balls to do that but looks like it worked out for you in this instance

      @@wcpportfolio Well I did it again this spring. 1 yr later. I drvie 35k a year and always so so busy. I did it this time when I was real tired early one morning. A life time of near 65 yrs of dumping stuff into the gas tank of cars,trucks,etc. made me a creature of habit.
      So this go around I had a tow truck come (unstarted mine) bring it to a local shop of ace mechanics (build and drive stock cars as a family) drop the tank and rinse it out good. So far 45k miles after the first one and 10k after the second one. I'm trying to get into t gasser 7.3 as that would do what I need but funds are hard to come by at my age and is it worth the trouble?

    Wow, bad day for sure! Green fuel nozzle goes to the green fuel cap. Blue bottle or larger blue box of DEF fluid goes to the blue cap. Great job Ron but its easy to see this owner ran this vehicle after the fluid was added. His insurance will pay for that! I have seen people get it done on the brand I work on (same situation). I have a 7.3 PSD f350 and was looking to buy a new 6.7, but the EPA exhaust and emissions is way more unreliable than the older trucks ... talking to the dealership, I ask them about reliability and they evade that question with the 6.7.
    I want to buy a new F350, but the 2 dealerships cannot tell me I could get 100,000 miles without a major repair. Sadly the EPA appears to be killing the diesel light truck market.
    Nice truck, just not too excited about a 7,000 dollar exhaust repair or 5,000 dollar turbo repair.
    Diesel engines used to be bulletproof due to being industrial grade, but the diesel shop told me if I don't need 400 hp, go with Gas because my maintenance costs will be much lower. That is sad!

    • @yamaharidr450
      @yamaharidr450 Před 8 lety

      not sure you've been getting the right facts.
      yeah the 7.3 is great runs forever minimal repairs get from point a to b.
      however and time has gone people demand more power better driving truck. new 6.7 has had minimal issues. early 2011 have a glow plug issue where the tip of the glow may break off. 11-14 turbos have not been the most reliable. however have many customers with 100000+ miles on their 6.7 without any issues. there not perfect but I believe the best diesel ford has put in a truck.
      epa is here to stay if your looking at anything 2008 and newer your going to have to deal with emissions. however as time has gone on passive regeneration and newer emission technology has dramically improved the life span of the emissions system.
      yes it would be great if emissions weren't around and trucks could have healthy lifespan with probably minimal issues.

    • @ben5017
      @ben5017 Před 8 lety +2

      Sadly I think it's cheaper to run petrol ... I have no love for any fuel ... I am looking at the lowest maintenance costs associated with the vehicle and cost per mile,
      Diesel used to be great before the govt destroyed it with their epa lies .... today's diesel owners want 600 hp with a quiet engine and this is what kills an industrial engine. All of the computers, you can keep them ... I thought the 7.3 had too many electronics given a diesel should be mechanically injected.
      Fact is this, since 2006 the automakers are making vehicles that are high maintenance piles of crap with the cheapest electronics.
      I will just put money into my old vehicle and not buy new ...

      Ford changed the Diesel engine from a reliable engine into a nickel and dime money maker that they try to convince people is cool to own. I only care about operating costs ... I figure a gas powered truck is about 10% cheaper to operate after average repairs and loss of use are figured in.

If you Re-route exhaust gasses back to the intake system how is that going to burn clean with the lack of oxygen ?? So you add Band-Aid components like def to illuminate visible smoke but the carbon dioxide is still present. What is the effects of "def" on the environment vs carbon ?? Natural gas and propane clean ?? Fat chance of that . The by-product is still carbon monoxide and dioxide and sulfur. It's all smoke and mirrors.
