    Its hilarious that you posted this Rudy. I recently sold my PSA 8 First Edition Shadowless Charizard for 30,000 this past weekend. I bought it for 1,600 around 5 years ago. Once I saw the hype these cards were going I simply had to cash in. 30k is seriously life changing for me!

      You bought into the wrong era. If you want these to jump, you'll need to wait a few more years. Products from the Early 2000's and before will be the first to be hit with this jump. The only reason certain modern products in Pokemon are selling very high is because of the includance of Charizard or Pikachu. Unlike in Magic where they don't have that type of character following. MTG will definitely see the spillage of what's happening in the Pokemon and Sports Cards Market, but it'll only really effect the nostalgic products. Anything really post 2003 won't see a bump

    I was too young for the start of magic but I did play Pokemon as a kid when it was newly released. Now I can appreciate all the people who talk about playing magic with alpha/beta. I remember cracking plenty of base set, jungle and fossil boosters. Never kept anything sealed though (what 10 year old does?!) and my mum gave all the cards to charity around 2005 when I stopped collecting.
    I know I had a full set of pack fresh base, jungle, fossil and team rocket at least. Don't really want to think about how much money my mum cost me getting rid of those cards instead of just putting them in the attic :(

    • @JMLRetroRoom
      @JMLRetroRoom Před 3 lety +3

      If it makes you feel better, being in an attic or just say storage for years, those cards could eventually have gotten stuck to the plastic sleeve from the folder pages. Especially if something else with weight was placed on top of it all that time or it wasn’t in a temperature controlled environment. Our attics here in the U.S (hot climates) get very hot and would of destroyed them in a summer or two. You’d rip the font image off the card trying to remove it from the page sleeve. So there’s that 😅

      @tiffanylastinger3925 Před 3 lety +8

      It's also because the age difference, I think.
      Magic was a game more popular for college kids and around that age when it came out originally because of the fact the cards were handed out at cons. So now the people that played are all in their late 30's early 40's which isn't influencer age.
      However, pokemon came out a little later and I believe after the TV show and video games which were already marketed to kids. The cards were very much meant for kids and now 20ish years later, the kids that played with them are in their early to late 20's which is the exact age for influencers at this point in time

      I think MtG is way more solid than Pokémon, not the "too big to fail" but there's too many people in it, especially players and MtG keeps going on and on, while Pokémon will always be more about videogames than the card game, and when pokémon cards get too expensive (minus the real rare ones), a ton of people will get turned off and prices will mostly go down. There's just not enough backbone in it I guess. Might be there for Pokémon videogames though (although they will rise in a regular way).

    • @ddrguy3008
      @ddrguy3008 Před 3 lety +20

      @@jacobyne Disagree. MTG is much more niche. Pokemon is more ubiquitous. Proof exists in the mtg finance group. They are largely responsible for making cards reach stupid price levels because they need to make their net 10% rather than work or make legitimate investments. That force really doesn't exist in pokemon, yet it is just as "strong" if not more in this market than mtg. Pokemon is objectively more iconic to more people than mtg. Mtg may be deeper, but pokemon has the numbers. As with most things, complexity tends to be forced into a back seat while simple digestible stuff gets to take the wheel.

      Pokemon cards are definitely more established than bitcoin. Once a card sells for a certain amount there’s really no reason why it would drop in value, because no one would want to sell it for less than the new established price. And before Logan Paul even made those videos a lot of cards were rising in value quickly due to coronavirus. And due to that no one is going to sell their cards for less than what someone else sold them for.

      @@superego8405 That doesn't necessarily mean that the card will maintain those highs or go up. If people find out that they can't even sell the cards at the price they paid for it, that's when you either have a price correction, or market crash, depending on how many people are actually collectors v. speculators. Pokemon was going up before this fad train started, but nobody that doesn't inherently like the cards is just going to be sitting on these things as an investible asset when the price isn't going up or staying stable. Sure, if the value crashes far enough, people are likely to just sit on a card and hold it, because it's not worth it to sell it at that point, but they also tend to leave the market entirely, which is what happened when the popularity of Pokemon cards crashed the first time back in the early 2000s.

    These prices are CRAZY compared to even three or four months ago.
    I remember keeping up with the prices pretty heavily in the tail end of 2018 / most all of 2019
    Around the fall of 2019... the average base set unlimited booster was pushing 3K a box with 1st edition shadowless boxes easily pushing 10K+
    Lets see... unlimited jungle / fossil probably 1800-2200 and add maybe $800 onto each box for first edition versions.
    Base set 2 was probably around $1200 a box
    Team Rocket / Gym Challenge / Gym Heros were just a touch behind jungle and fossil... probably $1500 for unlimited and $2100 - $2200 for first edition
    I quit buying pokemon cards right after gym challenge / gym hero's came out. Sold off my entire binder of cards for pennies on the dollar even pre covid prices.
    Here's the deal. Some of this product will pull back pretty heavily, some will not.... The earliest stuff will probably stay strong (Base / Base 2 / Jungle / Fossil / Rocket / Gyms) with the strongest being the earliest. Base set wasn't a huge run. There's only so much sealed product. Scarcity is a factor. Stuff that came after the WOTC era was probably printed to "oblivion" and is in a similar situation as revised. It can probably grow, but there's just soo much of it. Where as base set / base 2 is akin to alpha / beta. Rudy absolutely stole those boxes, even for end of 2018 early 2019 prices. I'd have bought every box I could have at those prices, at that point in time, without having any knowledge of the future. Of course, I didn't have much money... so every box I could buy would be like... 10 boxes at best. I do not see anything newer than the gym challenge / hero products having crazy growth that holds. Hell I never though Id see the day where team rocket held. In 2014 and 2015 you could buy 1st edition rocket boxes for like $700. Today that boxes would probably bring over 10K, and I'd think anyone who had them at $700 would be selling them at those prices. Unless your a king chalupa like our taco man Rudy himself, who knows there's going to be more long term growth (even if it's not the crazy exponential kinds) and has the staying power to let his money continue to make him more money

    I think another reason for the explosion in prices, both sealed items and singles, has to do with the crisis we're in. With many places and activities still closed or limited people have turned to collecting to keep themselves occupied, sort of like "Well can't do much in quarantine, but hey, I can work on my old card collection in the mean time." But yes, when a celebrity, CZcams or not, promotes the hobby in some way it will cause hype.

  • @gammafighter
    @gammafighter Před 3 lety +1

    I did something similar to you in XY era. I was collecting at that time and would buy two booster boxes of the new set: one to open and one to hold. For the 3 years prior, each set that was released went up by an average of 50% per year, so I thought it was a sure thing. As you know, that was when they started reprinting booster boxes and prices plummeted. I just held on to what I had and forgot about it. I probably checked the prices twice since in that time. Now, my booster boxes have doubled or tripled in price. Since that was what I was aiming to do anyways, I am planning to sell.
    I think you have a good point about the older sealed sets. I think this price range may be the new normal, but I can see it pulling back as much as 50%. However, I think it's just a matter of time until another inciting incident occurs and these older sets spike up again. In the short-term, I'm not as optimistic as you, but long-term, I am bullish.

Being a 1999 Pokémon collector the biggest thing missed here is something so simple, nostalgia. People want the cards and the big money collectors buying the psa 10s are driving the box prices. It’s all content based value. Psa 10 WOTC pops are not growing and besides getting lucky and finding pack fresh binder collections people are looking to spend big bucks on boxes to open and get that nostalgic feeling of pulling a red cheek pikachu remembering their childhood anime, while grading their cards. That pack fresh Charizard, you can’t replicate the feeling. Also, the investors may be cashing in but overall the nerds like myself will not put our product on the market. We will hold and enjoy it unless hard times come upon us, that is adding to this fomo panic buying we are seeing too. The product is out there just being enjoyed in collections :)
