Today I am showing you 3 easy steps to Train Your Ears To EQ like a pro. The goal of this video is to explain professional EQ techniques using beginner EQ techniques so you can train your ears to EQ like a professional producer. So it's EQ for beginners, EQ made simple, but how pros mix. This can help get your mixes as big, clean and punchy as your favourite pro producers. I'm using Ableton Live, but all of these techniques and principles are applicable to Logic, Cubase, Reason, FL Studio, Studio One, Bitwig and all other popular DAW's.

Awesome stuff! I'd be into even more EQ tutorials. Love learning from you.
Mate the last 2 videos where you’ve been taking it back to the basics have been really great. Turning off the spectrum - something I need to do more often to train my ears! Excellent content as always and the new track with Albuquerque is slammin.
Thanks Dilby! More priceless content 🔥🤌🏼
Interesting way of seeing eq like correction tool and effective too,i think you´re right most of the times we overdo it,regards!
Thank you . very interesting EQ tips to work with now
thanks dilby!!! 🙏🙏
Love this vid dilby - perfect timing as I’m releasing my first track soon 🙌
Thanks for this man, perfect timing! Using eqs without the visual stimulus is really great, trains you to listen properly - something I've learnt way later than I should have.
I'm still learning that myself to be honest, haha 😂
@dilbydj haha 😄 me too! I think using Pultec style EQs with fixed bands trains your ears to hear those fixed frequencies and once you have that solid baseline you can target different areas of your mix more effectively
Super helpful and practical!
Glad it was helpful!
🙌🙌🙌 master Dilby!
👊
Actually i just saw your video on kick & bass advice 9 days ago. Thanks
Hey mate! First off-love your music-and your videos are super clear as to what you're doing it and why, plus you're one of the few producers making tuts on YT I can think of that are regularly topping charts, which is proof enough of your depth of knowledge. Can you comment on situations where you might want to use a low/high shelf instead of a high pass/low pass? I've heard from several mixing engineers that LPFs/HPFs sometimes introduce phasing issues while shelving overall performs better (also for mono compatibility) and maintains some harmonic content that might not want to be lost on some elements. Cheers.
I'm not too sure about the phase thing to be honest. In practical application the most common thing I use a low shelf for is balancing vocals to decrease some lows. I might also use a high shelf on vocals to boost the tops but less common for me.
I often use a high shelf on top loops or percussion loops to sit them in the background behind my main hats.
@@dilbydj Thanks for your reply! This is how I've been taught to understand using shelves to boost/cut, so thanks for confirming that.
As far as I understand the phasing issue can occur when blending a dry signal in parallel with a filtered or EQ'd signal whereby phase cancellation occurs at the EQ band where the cut / boost occurs on the filtered signal.
This is worsened by steeper filter cutoffs and can result in almost complete phase cancellation unless the plugin has a "linear phase" mode (which most stock Ableton plugins do not as far as I know).
Dan Worrall has a parallel filters video which is the most recent in memory but I've heard similar things from other audio engineers with parallel processing and sometimes phasing issues with sends / returns. I think I know what I'm saying in all of this but could be a massive non issue... it's not like any of my productions are super pristine or I'm a proper audio engineer. ;)
Anyway, I digress. I was going through your Ableton template video the other day and I was wondering, would you cover your send/returns in a video at some point in different use cases, or have you already? I've seen the use of the janky reverb in the automation video but wondering if you cover using the use of them more comprehensively.
Cheers, sorry for the long message, appreciate your response and your videos are ace mate, seriously. Greets from LA. Best to you and your family.
Can you do a max dean breakdown, love the vids 👍🏼
Hey dilby love the tutorials! Could you do a video on setting the levels of all the instruments 👍🏻👍🏻
Have a look in the back catalogue bro 😉
@@dilbydj thanks for the reply mate! Keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Dilby, fantastic tutorial as always. I'm curious what your thoughts are on spectral ducking plugins like Fuser/Soothe etc for making space between conflicting elements instead of cutting like you've demonstrated here?
Awesome Vids. Thanks! whats the headphone make and model you using?
I use AIAIAI TMA2 Wireless + when filming and Sennheiser HD650 for checking my mixes etc.
@@dilbydj Thanks!
Man, ..I was like cutting the Hats and Shakers with Band 1 from EQ 8 not Band 2 as you re showing. That's why it all sounded that weak !!! Thanks mate for your help !!!
Nice one man. Give it a try.
@Dilby please tell me what headphones do you use? Thanks
Would you please make tutorial how to pick or twick bass to sound deep and soft like Alex O’Rion , Matter does. Constant struggle for me even after years of production and releases on major labels like The Soundgarden, BC, Manual and many more
I still can't make it groove like yours.
Practice makes perfect 👊
