great teachings
The perfect kick drum is a kick from people like so much they throw millions ask you to come here your kick drum
Change my mind
what i was wondering and didn't get an answer to in this video is whether the three parts of the kick have the same root note, maybe even the same note but in different octaves.
@@dawatcherz there are two types of kicks. Tonal which means you can actually hear a tone because of the body of the kick sustains one pitch. If the kick drum changes pitches then it is considered an atonal kick drum. Meaning there is not one note the kit covers several different notes as it either pictures up or pictures down
Those are pretty much a neutral kick it will fit with any mix at that point you have to worry more about the transient and the tail off but the tone would fit with almost any key
"... It's whiskey... " 😂😂😂 That cracked me up so much!
Haha, I am glad you liked it! 😂😇
I've noticed I gravitate towards mentors who not only know how to teach but are passionate & creative at what they do. Your videos are just getting better and better!
Thank you so much for your kind words of support, Daniella, I really appreciate it! 😇🙌🏻
1:52 Drinking whine is not the perfect way to start a day - it's whiskey. That made me laugh. I love that!
I was about to say the same thing
Please do not forget about the disclaimer 🥃😉
@@EDMTips which disclaimer? I'm drinking whiskey every morning from now on.
yeah! lets have that "picking your bass" video!
Already delivered so I recommend watching it :)
Having learned all of this in my time at Berklee Music campus, ive still veen watching your videos. Graduated 15 years ago, and your content is an awesome refresher. Cheers mate
Brilliantly explained video! Much appreciated. I’m going to try your technique on my track tonight.
Thanks for making these highly useful vids.
Another perfect video ! Thanks Will 👍
Thanks for this video... I have seen all these tips over the years and used them. But putting them into one video and presented in such a good way is ace mate. Invaluable info. Keep up the top notch work! 😀
You’re welcome, and Thank you!
Thank you!!! Been waiting for such a video for a long time... Love you man!!! 🔥🔥🔥
No problem!! Hope it helped! :)
Great video Will! Would love to see one on selecting the perfect bass like you mentioned
Indeed ! √ ✌
@@Jezz_Mcfly for sure
This is great info. I learned in the past that every single time I made a track that I was really proud of it was without exception every singe time when I REALLY took my time to make the whole drums and percussion perfectly matching the Bass. If you want it to sound right it's going to eat some time. Wish I found this channel a little sooner dough. That would have definetely made a difference to my listeners ears when I started. Great content! 👍
I love your sense of humor Will! That was a really helpful and well done video. Many thanks
You're welcome, glad it was helpful! 🙌🏻
Great tutorial, I'm happy to see, over the years, I realized almost all of these tricks by myself, making kicks as short as possible without losing it's power, tuning them only when it sounds better, etc... The only thing I wasn't doing is the mono switch only wih the kick and the bass to see if they are really glued. Thanks to your tutorials I'm gonna start to use mono references much more.
Awesome, Dani, I am glad you found it helpful! 🙌🏻
Your vids are always spot on timing Will Thanks
You're welcome, glad it was helpful! 🙌🏻
I needed this mate, thank you so much🙂
You're welcome, glad you found it useful! 👍🏻
Thanks for this tutorial, I am interested in learning more about the bass as well 🙂
Really a great video and helpful explanations. Thanks a lot, Will!
You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Very useful tutorial, thanks!
Awesome, I’ve been building kicks off of your kick from operator vids, grouped them in an instant rack, and added a chain selector to quickly switch…love it…and this vid fills in some more theory points. Tx friends 😎🖤🙏🐓
You're welcome, glad you found it helpful! 🙂
so much gold in this video.. didnt know about the splice bridge! Thanks
You're welcome, glad it was useful! Anything else in particular you’re struggling with and would like me to cover?

Hey Will, many thanks for all your great videos.
Yes, I will be greatly interested in a video explaining your way to select the right bass sound for a track.
Noted! I'll cover this soon :)
Great tips and great advice!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks as always for watching and supporting the channel! 🙂🙌🏻
Thank you for these informations! Very helpful!
You're very welcome, glad you found them useful! 🙂
The thing with tuning kick drums is that some keep descending in pitch until they fade out, while other kick drums arrive at a resting frequency. I wouldn't even know how to tune the first kind, most likely by ear or identifying the frequency at the loudest moment.
Great tips, thanks.
You're welcome, and glad you found it helpful 🙌🏻
your comedic timing has been on point lately mate, love you videos
😬
This channel is without doubt the core of best information for production improvement
Good stuff...thanks, Will!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!🙂 🙌🏻
I really appreciate your contents overall but this video imho tops every other. Thanks for these info, and thanks for providing them for free. Being the 5001st like is the least I can do, and of course I've already subscribed since long.
Thank you for your kind words of support, Dystonic, I am really glad you found it helpful!
Anything else in particular you’re struggling with and would like me to cover on the channel?
@@EDMTips thanks for asking. Personally I'm struggling with hihats and cymbals. Being the "pulse" part of the drum, they can add A LOT to the groove but I feel like I never get it right, sometimes due to the sounds, sometimes I get lost into the many possibilities of the sequence. But i gotta admit I still haven't checked your videos on the topic.
Always great!
Thank you, really appreciate the support! 🙌🏻
Super Good and informative! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You're welcome, glad you found it helpful! 🙂🙌🏻
Thanks for the useful and informative video. Having bit of trouble with my kick and this gives me a few places to check over. Cheers!
You're welcome, Steve, glad it was helpful! 🙌🏻
Thanks as always, Will! Please do make a video of how to craft the perfect bassline, if it is in your time budget. That would be an excellent follow-up to this amazing video 👍🏻

I'm still using the first KICK plugin. It's amazing.
It is indeed! 🙌🏻
Excellent tutorial, very clear, keep up the good work man :D:D
Thank you, and I am glad you found it helpful! 🙂🙌🏻
Great tutorial! I love this channel! You skipped over one important trick though: Using kicks that are a 5th or 4th away from the root note. This works really well for songs in the keys of A, B and C. If you have a song in A, I highly recommend trying out kicks tuned to E. Much more body and bass.
Love it! Great tip 👍🏻
@@EDMTips Yes, while tuning your kick is useful, having it to the fundamental of your track can be counterproductive and not give the best results, as the potential for phase problems actually increases. Just tune by ear to what sounds right/sits well. actual pitch is irrelevant.
This is what he should have done when he said "tuning the bass doesn't work" at 15:42. The kick should probably be as close to the original pitch as possible, so adjusting a 4th or a 5th away from the identified fundamental would most likely work here.
This was the best Kick tutorial I have ever watched. ❤
Thank you so much, stoked you found it helpful! 🙏🏻
Will, thanks a million. I have wasted so many hours trying to "fix the low end" by EQing and compressing, etc etc. As you will know, it didn't help.. Thanks to this video things finally clicked for me. Your videos are fantastic. Thanks for keeping it to the point and simple!
You’re welcome, and I’m really glad it’s helped!!
Wow, excellent explaining - I'll try this on a track I'm trying to make today because I have had difficulty with finding a good kick and making it work with a melody sample I want to use. Thanks :-)
Great video!!!
I suggest you use a multi-track osciloscope, too.
That's a cool way to adjust the kick length and the bass line...
I’ve had splice for like 6 years and I didn’t know you could do that 🤯
Imagine all the possibilities now 😉
this video was incredible !
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed :)
Thanks mang. Defo come with that bass selection video!

A perfect kick drum is when you like your kick drum. Change my mind
Why would I? ☺️
Every mind is unique :)
Crowder in chat ?
What if you mix on small speakers and you like your kick drum but the kick drum has some really high level sub-bass in it so when the track gets played in a club the kick drum drowns out the rest of the track that you thought was well mixed? So you like the kick drum but it ain't perfect.
@@nitelite78you misheard your kick drum

@EDM Tips hell yeah dude!!!! Your channel is amazing. I just started using ableton 3 months ago and your tutorials make perfect sense. I am SO grateful!!!
Btw huge deadmau5 fan here off course but sorry 😁I tune kick drums . Or i chose already tuned kicks. there is definitely a difference with the feeling. I dont know how to explain this since it s not long enough to create pitch but it still makes a difference. I also tune every single perc or drum sample I use. hats cymbals. I tune everything. Again I dont know how it works I started doing it after a kshmr vid. but If i tune everything track sounds and feels much better. It does not have to be exact pitch but I def play with every single element’s pitch before I commit.
