lots of great ideas here as I embark on mixing my 45 minute movie soundtrack! Next stop, getting a consistent -12db kick across 45 minutes. First time I've used reference tracks and blimey charlie, it's invaluable - if a little disconcerting how far out my initial rough mixes were! I'm also taking onboard your point about identifying what's 'backing' - I can't resist throwing in lots of extra lines which can be a problem - I realised watching this that I instinctively try to make everything intelligible - I'm going to just treat anything that isn't the lead as backing and bring it right down. Thanks for the tips.

1 question: in the very beginning is the ADSR put on the oscillators pitch or on its amplitude (volume)???

I’ve yet to find anyone who can explain the difference between verse vs build or chorus vs drop. Everyone seems confused. Also nobody talks about the relationship between the pitch material in the various sections.

Definitely Yes. Cubase is cooler due to ARA2, vocal processing. But Ableton has a much more convenient interface and cool, powerful standard plugins.

I don't think I'm spelling this right but that short explanation of "tombral cohesion" is going to be a game changer for me and I really appreciate it. It just makes so much sense and I ALWAYS get stuck with a lingering idea in my head of "WHAT OTHER SOUNDS CAN I ADD" and nothing new will sound good as if my track is fully saturated (but I trust my ear and there's always little details missing), but rearranging the puzzle with the same pieces is the lightbulb I needed to go off. Not only that but I was running out of things to "search for" so a new topic of study is going to lead to so many new techniques. thank you so much

Knowing chords is of course good, but knowing the scale and degrees, you can easily write down the necessary chords in any key. p.s. 2:08 - looks like Will is an Indiana Jones fan 😅

I saw somewhere a video where the kick was just kissing the limiter and was also brought down to -12db and you add some drive just before the eq. Anyway I got this habit of setting my kick at -12db. Cool stuff
