How GENETICS Affects Your Armwrestling Ability

  • When the topic of "genetics" in arm wrestling comes up, people usually throw around the word like they are all referring to the same thing. But there are actually a lot of misconceptions about genetics in the arm wrestling world. Just having a big hand or long arm isn't always enough.
    Genetics is a very multifactorial concept that has many aspects to that which most people aren't even aware of. In this video, I talk about some of the genetic factors that come into play for both strength in general and arm wrestling specifically.

    Very good video mate! Genetics is always a vague term used by the mayority of people but it's more complex than it's seem. Like you explain "genetics" is something that predispose you to a large set of things so when people often ask if they have "good genetics" i ask for what? We tend to think that a person with big hands or tall or even muscular will perform better at AW from the beginning but it's not that simple

    Apparently I’m a unusual case, because although Im a big & tall guy, and was stronger and more athletic than most of my peers while growing up, and I’ve resistance trained for over 40yrs, But (for my size) neither my hands are arms are big relatively, BUT yet I’ve always been very dominant at arm wrestling among my peers, friends and acquaintances, Constantly beating people with bigger hands and arms than me, and also beating countless people who can bench press way more than me, It seems for some genetic reason that I can generate a lot of strength in the arm wrestling vectors, and I’m particularly proficient at top rolling, although I can hook good as well. Sadly, the insertion for most people doesn't really vary that much, but there is truth in what you said. Even just a slight difference in tendon insertion/attachment point increases the leverage substantially.
      Also, the thicker bones would have to be accompanied by a more than proportionally greater bone density as well. Just bone *size* alone is not enough.

    Any tips on endurance? For someone whos verys explosive and fast off the start but if contained gasses out faster than the latter

    • @EastsideArmWrestling
      @EastsideArmWrestling  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hey man, endurance is a funny one: some people, of course, are more genetically predisposed to having greater muscular endurance, but it can still be trained to some extent by doing higher reps or training for longer on the table.
      However “endurance” is also in a way an illusion as well. I plan to cover it in a future video, but one example I can give you for this is just being stronger than your opponent gives you the illusion of having more endurance anyway.

      Get stronger, and get stronger in multiples aspects (angles, long, short, max, isometrics, high, mid, low reps) and in this situations you have to be smarter and be more eficient

    I would add 2 factors when it comes to genetics:
    - if we assume that practically all top armwrestlers are enhanced, then part of one's genetics is a response to PEDs. Some benefit more than others from the same substances/doses.
    - also genetic resistance to side effects of PEDs. This might not affect immediate performance much, but affects longevity of the athlete's career.

    • @EastsideArmWrestling
      @EastsideArmWrestling  Před 5 měsíci

      I specifically left out these factors such as response to PEDs, traveling, weight cutting, etc. as I’d categorize these as “external” variables, but yeah, definitely there are many other factors in play.

    What do you think about race? We know genetics is related to race as well. I think Europeans (white people) are the strongest, not only in arm wrestling but in all types of strength sports. They hold the world record for pretty much every heaviest lift ever done by mankind. I think Asians come in second we are pretty strong in the lower weight class and pound for pound, but Europeans are strongest overall.
