- Coming up… an interview with hard rock singer Mark Slaughter on his band, Slaughter's biggest hit: Fly to the Angels. It’s one of the most gut-wrenching songs of its time that came from very tragic circumstances. Mark had come off tour and called up his friend to get his old girlfriend’s number. He was looking forward to seeing here after being out on the road. His friend called the next day, but instead of giving him her this girl's number, he conveyed the sad news that she had just passed away. Fly to the Angels came to Mark when he attended her funeral. Up next, it's a powerful story from Mark Slaughter on a song that became a classic on Professor of Rock.

Lost my 39 year old daughter to stage 4 cervical cancer September 27 2020. She was diagnosed July 4th 2019. We played this at her memorial service. Yes I was sad . But in August 2022 my sister Donna Brandenburg took me and her son Scott saw Slaughter live at the Des Moines Fair when they were belting out Fly to the Angels I just sobbed uncontrollably because it really super hit and a gentlemen put his hand on my shoulder asked if I was OK, I said now I am.
I lost my wife to ovarian cancer 30 years ago, April 8, 1994 at 37 years young. This song touched me then and still does. Carry memories of her and this song.

Yup. St. Jude is a godsend.
Keep in mind that Donald Trump Jr. was one of the biggest donors to St. Jude Children’s Hospital for years, but then it told Mr. Trump to get lost after his father became the 45th American president. I’m not saying that SJCH has become thoroughly and completely rotten, but telling a big-time donor to get lost definitely is an indication of *something* rotten happening within it.

I lost my Father in November of 1991. When I left the hospital to go home, this was the 1st song that played on the radio. Thank you both so much for this song.
My husband died February 3, 2009 at the age of 39 yrs old. As I was driving home from the hospital, I heard the song "Arms of the Angel" by Sarah McLaughlin. I lost it. Strange how these songs would just be classics on any other day, but when we hear them immediately following a death, it's crushing. I still can't listen to that song. I probably never will. I'm sorry for your loss.

Speaking of Kool-Aid my step dad was a framer when i was little. For about a year he'd sneak us to houses they were building on the weekend when no one was there and hed nail up broken pieces of sheetrock between studs and we'd all pretend to be the Kool-Aid man. It was so damned fun.But he was diagnosed with cancer and it came to an end. He fought like hell but passed a year later. To remember and honor him I've built a small wood frame in the backyard and once a month I'll buy some cheap sheetrock,put it up and me and my kids will play KOOL-Aid man. They love it,as do I. Just giving them memories for when I'm gone too.❤LIVE LIFE AND LOVE HARD!

My neighbor outside of Vegas took guitar lessons from Mark before they broke big- He still had Marks handwritten lessons and everything. Said he was just the sweetest guy ever back then and that he never changed when he ran into him later in life.
Such a sweet guy... loved his music (hey..old Zepplin groupie here 😊). Prayers and sympathy to all the people here who expressed personal loss and how they relate to this song. 😢 The beauty of music.

It's true what Mark said, when you are sad, you want to listen to sad music because it does actually make you feel better. So many sad songs were born of really sad situations like his.
My first wife passed away unexpectedly in 2016. Believe it or not, Slaughter was one of our favorite groups and the main reason we met in 1991. We both had on Slaughter t-shirts and met on happen chance. We quickly became friends, then dated and a year later we were married. 23 years and 8 months later I lost my best friend ever. This was the first song I played after I left the hospital. Had it on repeat for hours that I drove and tried to grasp the concept of not having the one person that was my best friend over half my life. Slaughter and this song helped me meet the person that brought the most joy in my life and helped me find closure on a loss that I will probably never forget. The pain of losing your true best friend, soul mate, it’s a pain that never leaves. It becomes tolerable but never leaves and this song totally encompassed that feeling. Every word in that song I felt that day and many times since. It also helped knowing that someone else knew how I felt and expressed it with raw emotion. Thank you Slaughter for the decades I’ve listened to you and you’ve shared the emotions of my life. Thank you Professor for never letting these songs die. I watch you all the time and this is the reason I’ve been loyal for a long time.

I have a similar story. I had a girl friend that I would visit about an hour away from me. It started as dating but we ended up just very good friends. One day she popped into my head and I thought, I hadn’t seen her in a while and I’d be in town soon, maybe I’ll give her a shout and hook up. I was also thinking, wow it’s been a little while since we spoke last. I checked her Facebook profile and was devastated when I saw all the condolences about her passing. She had died just a short time before. I recorded a cover of myself playing Fly To The Angels and posted it to her wall. It’s still there today.

Slaughter is a story of a great band that appears and even in a short time leaves a huge mark on the fan base.
It is a shame that they were so late. The emotion and purity of their music is something you never forget.
We need bands like this now.
I took my son to his first concert last summer to see Slaughter. We got to meet the band and they autographed his guitar. Mark and Dana were so cool to talk to. Very down to earth guys.
I never heard this song until today. So timely. I lost a good friend of 10 years to breast cancer in February and my uncle passed away 2 weeks ago. This song says exactly how a grieving person feels.
Love this song. This was my best friend and guitarist in our bands favorite tune. Today him and I still reminisce about the time him and I were driving this time for some reason in silence and out of nowhere I said, You know what song I would love to hear right now? He immediately replied, Fly to the Angels, Exactly what I was thinking. There was something magical about the late 80's early 90's. It wasn't just a bombardment of incredible rock bands cranking out hits but even the classic Rock bands and artists had a resurgence, Not to mention entirely new styles of music coming out. Just over like five years, The amount of money I spent on new albums. Slaughter, Firehouse, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Saigon Kick, Every Mother's Nightmare, Sabotage, Gary Moore, Fates Warning, Scorpions, Great White, Tora Tora, Skid Row, Aerosmith, Bad Company, Damn Yankees, Steelheart, Extreme, White Lion, Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, and so many more. Such an incredible time for music and for one to just becoming an adult.

In 1990, I had just recently graduated high school. The best friend of an ex-girlfriend had a fatal accident riding on the back of a motorcycle. She was one of those souls who deserved to live forever. It was devastatingly sad for her to pass away so suddenly just before her senior year of high school. This song stood for me as an anthem in her memory. It took years for me to hear it and not get choked up. I'm right back there since the passing of my wife 4 years ago.
When my mama passed away in 2019 I listened to this song over and over and over. It got me through some of the worst days of my life.

Nice interview. I agree with you that if they had come out 2-3 years earlier, they would've been even more successful, but let's face it: most rock bands didn't survive the grunge revolution of 1992. That makes a lot of sense. Grunge was like a bulldozer that crushed many artists in its path. The tiny seeds in the ground represent the few bands who were able to have success after the Seattle movement.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I really hate the "blame Seattle" excuse. But some of these bands (like Slaughter and Tyketto) deserved to continue, and others didn't. I don't think it was Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley or Chris Cornell's intention to "kill" glam metal the way it happened. Radio and MTV played a HUGE role in it. And you don't hear Mark or Dana complaining about the Seattle scene the very same way Vince Neil, Tom Kiefer, Don Dokken, members of Ratt's rhythm section (not necessarily Stephen P.) or others have in years past. They were like the guys from Bon Jovi. According to Jon Bon Jovi himself, "Tastes change." And Mark is somewhat the very same way on this subject. NOT a single one of Poison's members have EVER complained about the Seattle scene. Just found out recently that Bret Michaels actually embraced the 90s alt scene and was great friends with members of Alice In Chains (already knew that the other three members embraced it, according to interviews.)
This was the song that got me through a horrific time when i was in my late twenties, i didn't think id make it through the trauma, this song was literally my saving grace. Slaughter was tremendously underrated. Fly high...❤
Two years ago today I lost a friend who was a big metal fan. I don't remember this song, but I dedicate this song to him.

I've been a long time fan of Slaughter. I love this band, I love this song! This is my favorite Slaughter song! Two years ago, my best friends mom passed away suddenly. My bffs mom was like my other mom. On the day I found out she passed, I heard this song and just started sobbing.

OMG! I literally just downloaded this song last week! I had just found it! So sad because of the circumstances behind it. But what a great song!
And what an awesome interview too. The reason I initially listened to this song was because I was sure that my brother had this song on his playlist, who I had lost 2 years ago when he was only 52. So this interview really hit home like my brother had sent it to me. Which would most definitely be something he would do to me! Because music was his passion!
I’m Australian and had never heard of these guys until recently as they were not really known here at all. But I heard this song not long ago and what a great piece of music it is! I lost my darling best friend 12th April 1997 to cancer aged just 34, leaving two little girls. She is a grandma now and those children are missing the most amazing woman from their lives. I miss Meredith every day of my life still. Such a beautiful loyal and strong human being.
My wife and I saw Slaughter just a couple of years ago. These are the coolest bunch of rockers. They spent half the show in the audience just having a great time.

2 years earlier, Mark was the voice of The Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Their song "Love Kills" from A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, is still one of my all-time favorite power ballads👍

The label loved the VVI band, but didn't love Vinnie, so they basically formed Slaughter without him.
When my Mom passed in 2014, i listened to this song for about 2 weeks straight it seems like. I know at least once a day for 2 weeks I had to have it & New Years Day 2024 my Dad passed and I went right back to this song, again just had to have it. If anything I appreciate them for the song.

Hearing this story about what prompted Mark to write this song literally brought tears to my eyes.
I don't think I could've ever imagined that heartbreak that Mark experienced about trying to reconnect with an old girlfriend and reminisce, only to find out that she'd died.
I met a friend of a friend, a few years ago, who had just returned to town to meet his only child; a 21-yr-old son whom he never knew existed… he got here just one day after he had passed. We just never know.
Spending the night at a friends house, mtv playing about to fall asleep and their video came on… I was hooked. Bought me a casette tape the next weekend. Love this song.

I agree with you if slaughter had come out a couple years earlier they would have had more hits. They had it all the musical chops, the song writing, the soaring guitars and yes the looks. Have never heard of this song. Obv never made it acriss the Pond. The ending of the Rock era was , musically speaking, a sad time. Very glad my youth 8 to 18 was spent in the 70s and as such i loved the 80s too. I like this song .

I remember when this song came out. I always thought this song hit differently, but I couldn't put my finger on why. After this deep dive into this song, it all makes sense. I've heard several people speak very highly of Mark Slaughter. Dangerous Darren on Hair Nation just spoke about him yesterday about how nice and awesome of a guy he really is.

.. point is.. Mark was amazingly great to us.. and they played over 2 1/2 hours including so many cover hits from the 80's.. He is a genuinely Human.. Being .. with positive vibes shared even a couple days before our show together.. I had no clue the guy talking great about our music was who he was until showtime.

Such a good song. In HS my ex bf drove his corvette into a tree. Then a year later my current bf was on his way to pick me up in a jeep and rolled it. He lived but his best friend did not. Such painful memories.
I loved the way he described how he pictured part of the song spreading your wings and taking flight. It definitely feels like that experience sonically. Love this album, it was one of my first CDs and still have it.

My little sister actually introduced me to Slaughter. 😂 I had heard of them, but I was more into classic rock at that time. Mark's signature voice brought something different to 80s hair metal. I always liked this song and the story behind it makes me appreciate it even more.

Slaughter is still one of my main faves from back then and still turn them up every time I hear them on the radio.
My daddy died in 2002, then I lost my mom in 2014. I felt like I'd lost everything. I came home from both funerals and prayed for God's comfort, then I played this song over and over. I sang along as my grief streamed down my face. This song really helped me to get through my pain

Slaughter was an awesome band. As a night owl, Up All Night was like my personal theme song. And Mark had a voice like no other.

Slaughter is a band I've not seen live yet. I had tickets to A Bill they were on during covid, but the show was cancelled. Never rescheduled. So to this day, I'm still looking forward to seeing (Mark) Slaughter in a live show. 🎸👍🎸
Slaughter definitely one of those bands that were much better than credited. Mark slaughters vocals are phenomenal
Not only with Vinnie Vincent’s invasion, but with his signature band slaughter he took it to the next level This band also included the musical legend Dana Strum also known as Dana Strumwasser that was responsible for many musicians hooking up together during the 80s forming very unique bands. Marks vocals are so phenomenal they can bring goosebumps at times as he intertwines a wonderful story with music thanks to his native roots.
Refreshing to hear an artist who is down to earth. Great song.

Fly To the Angels really moved me from the first listen. The vocals, the guitars, lyrics and production- they’re all perfect. And a hook that’d land a whale. Not bad.

I grew up in a small town in Northern BC. My best buddy had a satellite dish (the huge one on the back lawn) so he got MTV. When we heard Slaughter for the first time we raced down to the one decent local music store. They had no idea what we were talking about. The guy said we could look through their ordering catalogue which was like
3 huge huge phone books in a giant binder. We convinced him to make a special order. It took forever for the CD to arrive but when it did, oh man, we played it repeatedly. Great album! I agree Mark is very genuine.

I listened to Fly To The Angels a lot especially after losing loved ones. My husband passed in 2006 and my oldest son passed in 2016 from a drug overdose. He was 39. I still feel the pain as you know it never goes away. But this song was cathartic in helping me adjust without them. I saw Slaughter many times with my friends and got to know them a bit. They were a great group of guys and friendly to the fans.

Once again Mark is the ambassador of what a Rock musician should be. Humble, insightful and just down to earth. Met him a few times back in the day along with Dana. Some of the nicest guys who actually take the time to really engage and listen to you, the fan. They both are 100% responsible for Traci Guns signing one of my Ibanez RG550 guitars. Still hangs on the wall to this day. And then you, Professor of Rock. You are truly one of the few who are really keeping the great music of the past alive n' kicking. I love what you do!!!! 🤘🤘👊👊🖤🖤
Love Slaughter!! One of the first concerts I went to in my early 20's was Ugly Kid Joe/Slaughter/Ozzy Osbourne. I remember Slaughter's stage design had these red spinning lights, they sounded great too. Very rare to find a band that sounds just as good live as they do in the studio and Mark could hit those notes just as well in front of thousands of people on a stage as he could behind a closed session.
