For me personally, as someone who has battled depression and addiction for most of my life, the line "afraid of being ok, all things change " is real af, you become so used to not being ok that feeling ok seems so foreign and you don't trust it because it always feels like it will crumble at any moment or that you don't deserve to be ok at all. So when you start feeling like you are ok, it's scary as hell

"such a perfect day, take it just incase." " I'm scared of being okay cause all things change." THIS hits HARD. When you've been through this exact feeling and can genuinely relate to every single word, it makes your struggles actually feel seen and heard instead of feeling isolated and alone.
Chinchilla's first line is "Sertraline and a sip of serotonin". Sertraline is an anti-depressant/anti-anxiety medication that's called Zoloft in the US (as far as I know). This is one of my favourites by Ren and Chinchilla along with How To Be Me.
How to be me will have to be next if it’s anything like this one!

I wouldn't have known what Sertraline was until 6 months ago when I was prescribed it - working my way through things ok though
@@Rob-bt3evKeep on keeping on and you'll make it through. I've been on and off sertaline for a long time as it's the only one that works for me.
It’s about feeling suicidal, but then feeling nothing but numb on the meds. Mental illness a complicated thing to be treated for adequately, in order to make your life better. Numbing everything can’t be the only answer. But without it, you have thoughts of ending your own life. A double edged sword.
And the recorded version is too light, this live more tortured version really drives home the emotional pain of the lyrics. Their voices are just unbelievable ♥️
I'm an old head, don't do instagram, but will continue to show love here for you all now that I found you. Amazing how Ren has brought so many different walks of life together.
I've had autoimmune illnesses for 32 years since my service in Navy. I was fighting to be believed, then, for a diagnosis for 9 years. Once I could get Dr. to believe me, then you have pills for treatment, getting dosage correct, fighting to receive pain pills, etc... but I still today have the biggest trouble with handling the crash after having hope after new treatment works. For a bit. In the first few years after diagnosis of fms, I felt so hopeful. As it's been fms, sjogrens, dercums disease ,rheumatoid arthritis, pots, dysautonomia, hypogammaglobulinemia, trigeminal neuralgia, complex chronic migraine, seizures, and many comorbidities it is important not to become overly hopeful. Because allowing yourself the belief that the relief you are feeling is equivalent to being cured or new normal. May be a fall too deep to come up out of.

And I learned to soften, and that dance got easier." In the beginning you fight to be believed. But then there must be some degree of acceptance or you're just battling yourself. I had to learn that autoimmune illnesses doesn't define me , it's just a part of me. It's very isolating to be sick. Once you are not dependable, or even able to show up for others, when it seems you aren't doing well enough to even leave bed, there are people who feel guilty living their lives. So as time goes by there are fewer and fewer. If anyone is reading this please read " the spoon theory " it explains everything that breaks down an easy understanding of what its like to be chronically ill. 🥄 🥄 🥄 🦋 when is the last time you were able to lay in bed and not be able to feel every part of your body. For those in chronic pain, it's constant. I don't remember what it was like not to hurt. Mental health is so important do not be afraid, ashamed, shy, insecure about needing someone to help. Humans need humans. Let's be there for each other, kindness is free

This song gives me chills, no matter how many times I listen.
Medications are one way to numb pain but so are other habits like alcohol, smoking, porn, etc.. there are good habits too, of course, but I get the sense he’s talking about the bad ones and he buries himself with a great big smile to mask them all. Also, as a person who has a chronic illness (Lyme disease), at least for me, I’m afraid of being okay in this sense: you will inevitably have good days or a stretch of good days when things seem nearly “normal” and you think maybe this time you’re finally going to get well. Hopes are raised and you also see how great it is to feel decent. Then, just as inevitably, “all things change” and you crash again having your hopes dashed while also having the bitter reminder of how great it would be to feel well, or at least somewhat well, all of the time. So, while the good days are great and I’m grateful when they come, I kind of dread them in a way too. I don’t know if that makes any sense…. Anyway, my 2 cents. Really enjoy you guys. Ren’s music hits hard with me because I feel like I can really relate to what he’s been going through and appreciate how he expresses it in his music. Of course, I can’t be sure he means things the way I interpret them but its meaningful to me regardless. Best to you, too!

As someone that is on Sertraline, I sometimes feel empty when im medicated, and like im a shell of a human being. I never thought about that as a 'Chalk Outline' but it makes perfect sense. I listened to this one before the original. The original isn't anywhere the level of this version IMO.

@@ricksurratt9034Withdrawal from antidepressants sucks. Finally felt ready to get off Citalopram after 9 years a few months back; Speed worked great to keep the brain chemistry in check for the two or three weeks.
I was on it for a bit & it terrified me the day I realized my depression had lifted but all joy was gone along with it. That scared me more than living life off the meds.
What is wonderful about watching your reaction videos: you're both noticeably developing the skill to listen and critique what you are listening to. That is a great skill to develop, as a reactor, as a person.😇
I completely agree. You can see them growing in compassion and understanding as they reach into the minds of the songwriters they react to, whose lives and experiences are often very different to their own. Ren talks about things that they may not have firsthand knowledge of, but watching the guys listen and analyse the meaning, responding as well as 'reacting', is really nice. They both seem very genuine and it's fun to watch them discovering new things.
This is an absolutely beautiful song and this is the main version. However the first time I watched it, I couldn’t take my eyes off Chinchillas nails to the point I wasn’t fussed about the song. I then heard it again without the video and absolutely loved it. How to be me is also beautiful. The last verse is about his friend Joe who passed away. The main version is a lyrical video, then there is a live version, both with chinchilla. However there is also an Instagram version where he cries trying to sing the last verse. There is another song about his friend Joe called freckled angels.
If you go to her site her clothes are equally distracting. She is such a great talent. I hope more recognition gives her the confidence to drop all that and let herself be seen.

The other song by Ren and Chinchilla is the live version of How to Be Me, about REN’s good friend who committed suicide. Very beautiful and touching. You can hear the emotion in REN’s voice. Also kind of has a double meaning the whole song can be taken from the point of view of the person who committed suicide or of the loved ones they left behind.

Pain, painkillers, autoimmunity are represented by the noose. He wants to live, but the difficulties in doing so have him balanced on his toes just to breathe, hence the fragility of life and life situations can be.
Relief & sip of seratonin, don't cry cause there's a pill for everything.
You go to the doctor for relief of an ailment. But what you get is relief and a new addiction, don't work there's a pill for that too.
Feeling goes and you draw a chalk outline.
When you feel nothing, no emotion, you become a zombie.
Dead ( chalk outline). But still walking around.

Your doctor is sopposed to know what is good for you, right? Take this one.,... No one questions this system, once the drug hits you -you're high- you no longer care, feel or think, you let it be.
Ren is concentrated talent. What makes him so special is what he evokes in people, you feel, you think. He awakens something in our hearts, minds and souls that has been on life support for far too long, and it is starving.
Industry only wants money, not what moves you. So we get junk food music with no soul enriching value. No sustenance.
Ren can take reality, truth, dark evocative subjects and not only makes music with them - but turns them into a thing of beauty, art, healing, a safe place, a window, and does this with integrity, eloquence, creativity and intelligence.
Ren gave this world a gift that has largely gone unnoticed. The last two lines of the monologue from Hi-ren has created a feeling of unity. WE are all human beings. That is a powerful gift. Equality and unity.
It's strength comes from being said from a position of vulnerability.
He also hits different because his fun side is layered with references and meaning that will keep you coming back because his fish hook got set into your curiosity.
I have been on a discovery adventure lately learning about the Easter eggs he puts into his songs. Mind blown again! I know I don't get all of his references, sometimes it takes a few listens or a reaction video to realize there was a reference.
That makes me love them even more because there is something for everyone and it will stand the rest of time, "swinning backstroke" because the light will come on at some point in the future, and I will finally get it go back to hit replay.,..... Sertraline is an antidepressant medication (aka Zoloft), and serotonin is a chemical that occurs naturally in the body which helps you feel happier and regulate anxiety. (Don't discount the usefulness of medications. It can be tricky to find the right ones, but they can make a world of difference for some people.)

Great pick boys!!! 'How to be me' with Chinchilla is great, but a bit different. Another really awesome collaboration is with Eden Nash in Ocean and Humble - mixed rap and vocals -super fun! But honestly, it's just a beginning - there is too much to list - Bongo Bong and Englishman in NY with the Big Push - has amazing vocals and great vibe! Love Music 1,2,3 is another fun one. Money Game 1 and 2 - is a must! Money Game part 2 has more views and more people relate to it, but part 1, is more creative and lots of nuance there to decipher - in one of the interviews Ren mentioned that's the song he put a lot of thought in not just lyrics, but also performance and symbolism - most people have a hard time figuring it out though, so it might be fun to see you guys deconstruct what he is trying to say between the lines. Anyways, as always great pick and great reaction, it's hard to miss with Ren - haven't found a song I didn't like yet.

The thing with this is, yes, there's a really deep message to it - reliance on medication - but it's a damn good song. Really catchy and really beautifully done.
You guys really hit the mark on this one!! The pill not only refers to medicine but the fact that he has to accept his fate as being sick and a slave to his own body at least that’s what I got from it
Also, just a sidenote, A therapist does not give prescriptions. They guide you through issues so you can learn how to cope that’s what he talks about in hiring psychologists. They are the ones who give you the diagnosis and usually prescribe medication‘s due to chemical imbalance in the brain, also a lot of times people are misdiagnosed and giving pills just like Ren so whatever they’re taking actually makes them worse this same thing literally just happened to me a few weeks ago I had to have a DNA test to see what medicines my body can absorb and which ones would cause negative or no affects I had to do the same for my daughter because we have an issue producing dope mean because of our ADHD possibly autism. We are all being tested in the next few weeks . Also, as another sidenote, most of us kids who were born in the 80s and 90s suffer from adhd and are being diagnosed so late because our parents just thought we were bad kids 😂

Psychologists are the therapists that aren't qualified to give medication or diagnose, only speculate & communicate with the psychiatrist on what their perspective is on the patient.

Ed Sheeran does a lot of promoting of UK Grime etc. So take a look at he's track 'Take Me Back To London' showcases three different UK rappers, so a good introduction. Also 'Dave - Black, live at the Brits 2020' is phenomenal. Good luck.

To give abit of perspective, when chinchilla comes in with "sertraline and a zip of serotonin, don't cry because there's a pill for everything". When most kids go the doctors and get diagnosed with depression these days, the first pill you always get given is sertraline, it's an antidepressant! I've personally taken it in the past, but they're pretty addictive which is scary!
He's talking about the prescribed meds he's been using, each one has side effects, hence the "floating chalk line) as his body becomes used to one med and it no longer helps, he is prescribed a new, sometimes stronger med, which leaves him feeling "numb" inside (Chalk outline) So the doctors who keep upping his dosage or switching out meds for stronger meds, are feeding his bodies "habit"

I don’t want to poopoo on the fun vibe you guys have on your channel. This song is such that it lends itself to heavy talk, though.
I got really sick a couple years ago and had to be put in medical coma. Then it took several weeks to wean back off all the medications they used to keep me asleep.
During that time, my 3 year old died. Even following doctor's orders, I was on so much medication I couldn’t keep stuff straight.
For the first 2 weeks after he died, I woke up every morning unsure if I was at home yet or still in the hospital. I was pregnant and didn’t always remember I was, and sometimes thought I was pregnant with the child who died.
This is, hands down, the most painful and devastating experience of my life. And there I was, so fucked up on medicine, I couldn’t even remember all the time that my son was gone. That's messed up. Medicine CAN help, but it shouldn't numb people to the point they can't feel the normal feelings of life. I was definitely like a zombie. Walking around in a chalk outline. 😢

"I'm scared of being ok, cause all things change" I've lived that one. I had a about 6 months last year that were just incredible because everything was working for me. I spent a while trying to figure out what I was missing that was wrong because there had to be something. And the rest of the time, I was doing my best to ignore the horrific fear that I was going to lose it. That it couldn't last. And I had no idea how much time was left.
I've listened to this song every day for about 5-6 weeks now!!! It's so amazing! I say each time I hear it it brings new thoughts to me!!!

Regarding pills and therapists. Some of us do need them. It depends on what your problem is. I have complex ptsd and traumatic brain injury and before i got my meds i was a mess from hell. The way to make pills work is to take them situationally. I use them to take the edge off my flashbacks so that i can be steady enough to use the coping skills i learned.
For the song itself... its when you dont find meds that help...the chalk outlines thing is a sort of meme in mental health. You have to find a therapist that will work with your limits and expectations. But thats not all therapists. So you struggle to find the right balance of everything and working towards that is a stress only those in it can understand.
Should also say that what i mean is like...i ask for lower doses than they recommend and i only take them when i know im gonna be in a context that is risky for me. The nature of my problem is similar to what happens to war veterens. I just was exposed to a different kind of violence than war. So much so that if im in a situation where things seem similar...my brain will take me back to the place where im experiencing the violence. Like it will feel like its happening again...complete with the terror and the pain. The real world fades away and im right back in hell. The meds stop me from slipping away entirely until i can talk myself back into full reality on my own.
For me the lyrics represent health struggles and how doctors often just send you straight to medication, sometimes medications that don’t help and cause addictions.
Rens verse represents physical health. Chinchilla’s represents mental health.

Depression is a little different because it doesn't fix the initial reason that caused it, just balances your mood out. You've either gotta fix the cause or learn to think differently to get through it.

I don't know if it's been said yet, but if not, here goes.. Head meds can be extremely helpful. Not just for "numbing" or "escaping", but for literally saving people's lives. I don't think this song is specifically saying "don't take meds" but is just more evidence of the complex medical struggles that Ren himself has gone though. Meds have helped myself and several of my loved ones, some of whom would not still be here if they did not have access to this help. Not all psych meds work, and some of the older ones in particular were more about numbing than helping, but there are *literal, measurable, physical* differences between the chemistry and brain health of a person with depression, anxiety, etc and someone who doesn't have it. In my 20s I was actually a part of a medical study at Stanford that covered this very thing, and I have several brain scans to show for it. Lots of non-medical strategies *can* help the symptoms, and some of these may be enough for some people, but brain chemistry differences *are* a real thing. Positive thinking, or being outdoors, or getting joy from music, or whatever else helps, will not fix the problem if it is severe enough, and people shouldn't be made to feel "less than" if they need to rely on meds.
