- Chase Elliott was wrapping up a day of snowboarding before he was supposed to fly to Las Vegas for the NASCAR Cup Series race that weekend.
He and his friend decided to go for one last run down the mountain, which ultimately led to him fracturing his leg near his knee and forcing him to the sidelines for a handful of races.
He tells Dale Earnhardt Jr. the details of what happened that day and how he strategized making calls to break the news to his dad and his team at Hendrick Motorsports.

I have never met Mr. Hendrick but I anticipated that he would react the way he did, based on what I have heard about him.
Between him and Richard Childress if I was a driver I’d want to drive for them just for that reason and not money reasons and I’m even a dodge fan. They both seem to put people first over money in times like these. Can’t say that about some of the other big time car owners

2020 should've been Harvicks, Chase more-so earned '22, removing the playoffs he had the most points that year

I tried to ski one time,,,fell all over the damn mountain and that was it. Made my way to the lodge and bar watched everyone else fall all over the Mtn . Much better in the lodge by the fire.

Patella injuries are extremely painful. Been there done that. I can remember touring Bill Elliotts old Coors Melling shop in Dawsonville Ga when I was a Junior at Dawson County High School.
It's not the fall that hurts/kills ya, it's the sudden stop.
Chase, you should be very appreciative of the Toboggan guys, giving you an accurate evaluation of your injury. That started you thinking about your next steps.
I turn 78 this coming Saturday here in California. Maybe 6 years ago i was clearing deadwood on a slope of my property in preparation for Fire Season. While carrying a bundle downhill my foot slipped sideways and Ifelt pain.
I went to my primary care doctor immediatly who referred me to the joint specialist. They took xrays and her diagnosis was that the reason my right knee hurt was because i was old. Pain meds were prescribed. I told her my left knee was the same age and it felt fine.
I changed joint specialist and my new guy sent a camera into my knee and saw that my meniscus was torn away and folded. Surgery was scheduled for that Friday, which was the 13th. I was up and on crutches that day and walking without crutches the next.
I was amazed at how much the muscles in my quads had atrophied in one day!
My mother tore her ACL on her last run one day… I feel this
Injuries come at such a terrible time. It really is such a shame.
Even the patrol can become that guy. Everyone rides the sled at some point.
People, I really do not appreciate the way you call this guy boring and uninteresting. If he doesn’t like being in the spotlight, likes to keep things personal, or is shy, then that’s his personality and the way he is. You should respect it. But it seems like you cant. And also, it’s rude to call someone boring. Everyone has a good personality and is interesting in their own way. It’s fine if you think some are more interesting than others, but to call someone boring is not okay.
I don't think it's necessarily being reserved or not exclusively outgoing that people have a problem with. I think it's the duality of coming across as 'uninteresting', while also being propped up as the most popular driver as voted on by the fans. Lot of people seem to have a problem or at least be turned off by that

I think even from a Chase fan perspective, the whole situation left me bummed. I want him in the car and to do good, but I have to say they found great drivers to fill in those races missed. I'm happy the whole process of telling and going through everything was as hassle free as well. He already felt bad for not being there for the team, so why kick him?

Rick learned from Tim Richmond being sick and Ricky Craven being hurt to take care of his drivers and know to have backup plans
He also knows and understands that happy drivers are better preforming drivers which is why he gives his drivers so much more leeway to do whatever they want than the rest the owners do
Something that I appreciated a lot last year when this happened was that in the midst of the media tearing Chase down for snowboarding, all the garage took his side and just said hey, we all have lives to live. If I remember right not a single driver ridiculed him for what he did, just wished him well.

Ughh I’m cringing to chase explaining this, I’ve jacked my knees up from my bmx riding days and any kind of knee pain or hearing about it makes me cringe. And definitely understand his sick to stomach feeling but for me, I know I messed up and injured myself when I start dripping sweat, I separated my collarbone from my shoulder blade (ac separation) and got up to sit down and had a puddle at my feet in minutes, annndd that’s why I’m 34 feeling 54 😬😂
If you're wondering what it feels like, imagine a major calf cramp that wont go away. At least thats what it felt like when i added a temporary second knee in the middle of my right shin.
The reaction of the crew chief and owner are to be accepted because that’s part of the job in those positions
Hendrick is actually the only owner that would respond that way the rest the owners have there drivers on such a short leash that they damn near can’t use the bathroom without permission

You honestly don’t understand the value of having Mike on the show until he is not there. The pacing is off, Dale rambles without constraint and the voice of the non-racer” is gone.
I totally get that it made him sick to his stomach. I had a tourniquet put on and when they tightened it up, it made me sick to my stomach and hurt a lot more than the wounds did.
Holy shiat Dale, give the guy a chance to talk. You do a great job of painting the picture with your questions, but IMO more brevity would make these so much more enjoyable to watch.
Man crappy luck for him last year hope he can turn it around so far this season hasnt been great and nascar really screwed him today at cota. That penalty in the s turns was a joke he hit bump wrong went sideways he didnt advance his postion or anything

From a viewer standpoint the Bristol race was boring very boring drivers seem to make it all about them if they had a good time or not it’s about the fans that’s why you guys are getting paid you’re losing sight of the way raising should be and was
