the numbers are their age order (except dk and the8 who swapped so the8 could be number 8) and early on it was hard to keep track of everyone so they used the number system before going places (like leaving their waiting room). they'd call out their numbers in order to make sure no one got left behind. i think there was a clip of them using it to make sure no one got left behind on an elevator too, since all 13 couldnt fit. they showed a lot of the system in their episode on the manager years ago (and why it was so important, their waiting room was always so packed with all the members and staff that they lost mingyu and he hadn't even left the room)

They have designated numbers during early debut days for easy rollcall. Since they have too many members it’s hard for the managers to check the members so they used this number system to keep track of everyone.

34:50 lol..they did cheat actually. Before they got the key word 'autumn', Jeonghan passed the message to write down 'tree' (watch 32:32) It's amazing how he randomly thought of tree and 'autumn' was picked by the staff. Too bad Seungwan messed up though..lol
