- “Sorge infausta una procella” from the opera Orlando, HWV 31
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
David Thomas, bass
Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra with Nicholas McGegan
Pernicious Tempests often rise
And shed a Gloom o’er Seas and Skies
Some beamy Star does then impart
Its Rays, and gladdens ev’ry Heart.
The Brave may often err, ‘tis true,
But when that Error once they view,
What prov’d before a Scene of Woe,
Now bids unbounded Pleasures flow.
[English text used in the original libretto]
In the early 1730s Handel’s Italian opera company based at London’s King’s Theatre included the talents of an excellent bass, Antonio Montagnana (fl. 1730-50), a Venetian whose voice was apparently ‘like a cannon’. His finest Handel stage role was Zoroastro in Orlando (1733). Toward the end of the opera the benevolent wizard takes pity upon the crazed Orlando, and resolves that his magical powers will cure the hero and put him back on his path towards military glory and honor.

Gilien Gilienova Handel's music is indeed something very special. Of that there can be no doubt.
Unexpected illustrations, but nevertheless very well chosen. The rendition is simply wonderful. Thank you, dear Jeffrey! ♥ಠ‿ಠ☀ Have a wonderful weekend! Big hugs to you from Vienna.
It was easier to find multiple depictions of wizards among these fantasy type illustrations. I actually like how they worked in my video, and unexpected can be good, right? David Thomas is one of very favorite Handelian basses, and this recording has been in my collection for a long time. I've always loved this aria, and I especially like how he sings it. Thank you for your continued support. I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well, dear Theo. Big hug from Cincinnati.

You're welcome, dearest Rosa. I'm happy you enjoyed this.
Fantastic voice. Love it. Congrats
He sounds like a tenor or a high baritone not a bass
David Thomas is a famous English bass. He does have a nice upper register, but I believe he describes himself as a bass.
@@JeffreyStivers A lot of people do. And while his voice quality sounded deeper and more textured later on, he's really more a baritone. The voice doesn't have the deep quality of a bass.
Tornado Sam It’s actually a moot point, because in Handel’s day, the roles would have been designated for a bass, even though most would have more accurately been described as baritone. Personally, I would classify this singer as a bass-baritone. He’s definitely not a bass, in the modern usage of that voice type.
@@JeffreyStivers I would say baritone, but that's only my opinion. Either way, great voice.
@@therealtornadosam I'm very fond of his singing.
