My move to SQ was because I wanted a genuine musical experience. Good clean hit on bass... and not over bearing. I actually enjoy the highs and mids as much as the bass these days.
Thanks for all your knowledgeable advice. I'm a 34 year old dad, and drummer that used to have 2 Phoenix Gold powered JL 12 's pounding in a regular cab Nissan truck . I can relate, so I now have settled for a single shallow Pioneer 10" in a tiny box under the rear seat in a 2011 Titan and some Alpine type s 6x9's in the doors. Since watching your videos, I have been bitten by tha bass bug all over again. I am buying up amps and subs for all our vehicles and even my bass boat. It's getting a little crazy, but we are so lucky to live in a time where this equipment is affordable enough to buy like this. I appreciate all the reviews. From the Duals to the old school punch amps, keep it going brother.
Yessir, audio is a passion too many of us lose over the years. I have fun testing amps and doing these extra vids as well
21 year old me,4- Savard Pro 18's ....46 year old me...One 12...On point with you Big D
👌😬👍
I've had a system in every truck and boat since the first time I head my Posse On Broadway on a old school punch 150 on 2 punch 15's . MBquart in the doors of a 1990 Chevy s-10 with a snug top.
Nailed it man. Had two 15"s off of 3kWRMS 20 years ago. Now I have one 12" and barely even turn it up. And honestly it's not even due to trunk area or money. I'm just satisfied with that much.
I think our preferences change over the years. As good as they have gotten over the years, I still feel factory audio systems are junk and need upgrades to sound better
That's a definite. Even the most premium system you can buy with a vehicle like I have the Challenger SRT8 with the Kicker 10" and 500 watts or so amp it has. I just use the stock surround sound / stereo system matched to a large amp to feed a large 12. It gets the mirror falling off, foreward dash pieces to bounce, pillar plastics to wobble loose and it's great. The older we get at least for me I also always let the pressure release and have windows down when pushing air force. High treble too. Let it not reverberate back into the cabin causing frequency cancellation which is distortion and damage to our ear drums. A vehicle with windows open is like a sound studio with great acoustical cancelling foam walls etc. Bleed it out. Dampen it or let it go. I bought all new component speakers to replace all the stock premium ones I have but honestly I want it louder only to show off more everytime I get to thinking about tearing my dash and doors up. It's not like I live in my vehicle anywhere near I did as a youth when you had to get out of the house to hear your tunes. Now we are older and have houses and basements and garages where we can boom and have sql and spl destroying our houses too if we feel cracking windows and walls. lol.
Life also happens. Ground pounders get expensive.
At least there are some factory headunits that are OK , I assume you've seen that some can even be flashed flat (I'm thinking of the one a SQ team sent back to japan) or how certain VW radios can, in software, be changed to 4vrms non-eq outputs for easy aftermarket amp integration. I think we should take our wins where we can get them!
Also if you can think of any other examples of car manufacturers making amp/speaker upgrades easy I'd love to hear them. You're an old school audio guy, let us learn and share knowledge amongst all tastes and brand preferences!
Just love your channel. Turning 50 here in a couple of days, I’ve been into car audio for over 30 years. I love and had thumping systems that you can hear a mile away. But I’ve learned a long time ago that there’s more to music than the bass drum. I’ve been using Alpine equipment for many years now and to me there is nothing better. When you’re listening to a song that sounds so good and the person singing, the voice is in the middle of the windshield, it kind of puts you in a trance. I have a sub level for the subs if I want a little more. But if you have a good sounding system and it’s a good recording, that’s what I like, too. I love music and that’s why I got into car audio a long time ago.
Unfortunately my health has taken a turn down and I don’t know how many more systems I will be able to install in my truck, (I’m never satisfied, lol) but if my two Alpine 3545’s that I have listed on eBay don’t sell, I’m going to install them. One is going to power two sets of Alpine 6.5 components in the doors and the other is going to power two Alpine 12’s. This might be my last one and I want it all Alpine. I like my Alpine 9887, but I wouldn’t mind getting a new head unit, but I’ve heard that the newer Alpine head units have distortion problems. So the 9887 is staying for now. My truck should sound nice and thump a little. As long as I’m happy with it, that’s all that matters. Sorry to ramble. SQL and SPL, I love them both.
Hoping that you can make a comeback health wise, so that way this won't be your last system. Even if it is, I hope you get to enjoy it for a good while.
The Silent Observer
Thanks. I appreciate it.
If you ever get rid of the 9887 I hope it's for the 9885. Today's head units are junk. If you want newer, the 7998 or 7995 is as new as I would recommend. Best wishes with your health
Sorry to hear that. Keep u in my prayers
I hear ya GDL. I did not realized I have been in car audio for so long until I read yours and I have been in it since the late 80's. Ugh. One thing that is crucial that is not addressed enough is the pursuit for near zero distortion to save your ears.
Just did my first competition run yesterday with my budget setup.
139.1 on 590 watts
Using a walmart touch screen, soundstream 8k, skar audio 15 in a prefab, 4g power wire, 8g speaker wire, stock alt, stock battery, no sound deadening with driver door open meter on windshield. Fairly happy with my first time and with a budget setup. Keep posting and keep up the good work.
I think we are all here to watch the continued evolution of car audio. We don't have the same type of passion for car audio as we did in the late 70s early 80s. That being said we didn't have the wattage that we have now. So we sit and wait until the wattage, the capable passion for an audio experience and perfect vehicle all finally come together...maybe SMD caddy?
LOVE your videos! Keep it up man
to hell with trunk space!!!!! and i am 46yrs old!!
juggernautxtr I hear you dude , im gonna turn 45 Tuesday, its good to hear that from a man my age , take care
You too!!!! Thought I was the only one!!! I'm 39 and I don't care about trunk space, subs first!!
42 right now and one big box taking half the trunk and tool boxes taking the rest.
48 here and I've had a system in every vehicle I've owned. Had kids...no problem. Now they are grown with audio systems of their own, son and daughter.
MacNifty Exact same here, lol
How did I miss this gem. Love hearing your thoughts and experience Big D!
I'm 49 and still nuts about car audio. I still like it louder than most and still enjoy feeling the bass through my seat back. I'm also lucky enough to still hear above 16Khz.
I think it's up to us older folks to start teaching the youth about bumping edique. Things like- if your AC works, don't drive through a neighborhood at 3am with your windows down blasting your music. I had a neighbor that finally got the message when I got fed up and started doing it to him at 8am when he was sleeping (only my system was alot louder).
Also, don't fill up at a gas station with your windows down and volume turned all the way up. People might not appreciate the same type of music, but more importantly, no one wants to hear the amount of distortion and clipping your system can put out, or that you have ZERO clues about sound deadening because your body panels are vibrating more than your subwoofers. You may this makes you an SPL kind of person--it does not.
Finally, people need to stop making videos of their rear view mirror vibrating or moving. It means nothing except your mirror mount sucks and/or is old, and yet people seem to "wowed" by this type of demonstration. This is not a good measure for SPL. A rough idle could duplicate this in the same cars.
Sorry- I started ranting. Lol. If you're young, regardless of SQ or SPL, enjoy it while respecting everyone around you.
Great points!
I'm 49 years old and still into car audio. Always been into it ever since I was in high school. Been in and out for years gotten back into it as of lately even posted videos on my you tube channel. Me personally I say screw the trunk or back seats put a big ass box back there and keep bangin. 👍👍👍. Big D every one of us looks up to you. You are the man when it comes to old school audio. Keep up the great work brother. You have a subscriber for life. 👍👍
Thanks for your perspective and feedback 🤙
Thanks for the video!! Always dig your content. I run in the middle of this debate as well. I like loud but I really dig crystal clear.
Keep on keeping on Bid D!!!!
Well spoken and mature. Lots don’t think about these issues.
Love the videos BigDWiz I got out when I was young and getting back into it now so much has changed lol keep it up brother
Liked the new format BigDWiz. Keep it up!
love it man would love to see more of these discussion videos in the future keep it goin man!
51 yr old Rockford fanatic. I like both sq and spl. Yes it breaks stuff but I have 2 other family vehicles to be nice in. When I want to hear it loud and clears I crank up my power series and let it loose. I’ve been into car audio all my life. From my first 8 track install some 36 years ago to my now sq/spl suv.
I do keep my vehicles usable to carry the family which always come first
Then you should know that Rockford is garbage nowadays.
John VanCamp power series is still great stuff. Pricey but nice. Far from garbage
Having a balanced system is key to it sounding good 👍 (love the show).cheers from Australia 🇦🇺.
Big D you nailed it. I played with subs and amps until my 1st child the stopped all together for 11 yrs. Than bought a couple subs and look for qs. Keep up the work love your content.
You hit the nail on the head bro. As you get older and certain aspects of you life change you have to choose one or the other.
Enjoyed the change of format I feel the same as you do
You should keep doing this I found this conversation very informative.
Very good lessons Big D! Much love and respect 🙏
Great video, BigD! Really enjoyed it!
I'm that older guy who wants that nice clean sound. BUT, I definitely still want to feel the boom. Thank you for the Korean shootout btw. It was a big help. Keep this great content coming
😜👍
Can't wait to see how it turns out🤔🤔
I have been a hard-core electronics fan. My father in Ham Radio & DJ business on the side from his main job. I got into computers b4 I got my license at the end of the month I turned 16. Leaped into Stereos and systems as well as vehicle upgrades between my friends & I. But when the time came where I was gonna be a father I set aside the stereo stuff till she became a teenager. 13 years waiting has come. Just about done installing the 4 channel Orion XTR750.4 to run my 4 components. Taking my daughter 2 my VW Owners Club meeting this Sunday. Gonna jam the way there. Monoblock amp coming once I finish the Big 3, Isolator, and AGM Battery instead of the one I have now in the back. At which point I plan to get that along with a custom box single 10 so I have the space that it needs but allows me to still put a couple items in the back. As I take this ride to shows I'm gonna have it setup nice once the cold Wisconsin weather allows it.
thing is with the equipment they have now 1 12" can hit harder than two 15's from back in the day.
Brandi Dudley i hit my friend with one 12 and then 2 fifthteens and he said the fifthteens hit harder
I enjoy watching all your videos
Great video Bigdwiz!
Thanks brother 🤙
Nice format , great topic ! You are more than just amp tests!! Also in the future we have to discuss THD on amps not being mentioned anymore. Also class D vs. A/B amps on bass and on mids.. thanks for putting the time in on all these vids.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions 🤙
Want to know the difference? One is smaller, more efficient, and runs cooler. But if it’s cheap it will be noisy.
I am 36 I enjoy shaking down these young guys that think they got something, I quit for years until. Neighbor thought he was beating down the block had to show the young man up, love ppl when I pass them and they r like wtf was that
Daniel Harrell 😂😂😂
Very good video. Working on an sq setup now.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
SQ all day everyday! i love my daily driver everything is hidden no huge box or amps in the back. i do have a sound processor and it gets loud enough for ME in the car.
Nice video bro i like this.
AMEN BIG D!!!NAILED IT!!😊
What a great perspective. Thanks Big D Wiz...
Thanks for the feedback 👍
Great video! Always appreciate your perspective. Drivin in da car = Good!
Thanks for the feedback 🤙
keep them coming really like it.
Really good video DWiz! I'm a fan and subscriber and have appreciated your videos for a while! I couldn't agree more on the progression of bassheads who convert to more SQ-lovers. Raising kids, I warehoused my amps / subs for nearly 16 years until recently. I'm back "tastefully bangin' in the LS 430...all RF of course! Keep up the good work and being our conscience when it comes to ol' school perspective and equipment! Continued success! JMc from Big D!
Well done, sir I enjoyed riding with you today.. I'm old school also and I agree .. great discussion
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Love the trunk space talk - we need that trunk space these days
Facts!!
Yeah I regret messing up my 4Runner. I will never put a SPL system in a nice car again. You make sacrifices with a SPL system, and u have to accept those consequences
Thanks for commenting brother 🤙
Yeah I tried to minimize damage but even with seam welding and reinforcements I still rattled my old blazer to death.
Great vid man 👌🏾 Thanks for sharing.
Your knowledge is gold
in future vids, you should talk about tips in the sq world and what equipment is great for sq (bands of amps etc) great vid
Again great video brother
I was 16 and had a 1000 dollar truck and a 3000 dollar system , I was a bass head , u Big Dummy..... did not care about Rattling some old ladies China for about an hour booming in my driveway. Cops , tickets it’s was all fun.. now I have a 14 year old daughter and she always wants me to turn up my two 12’s and I’m like turn it down there a cop .. times change , people change a bit .. I still love it just on a smaller scale .. for me it’s the planning of a full new system , picking out new amps , mids , getting it all in the mail. Still fun and your channel helps so much as in what is good and what’s real junk .. at 16 I went through a lot of amps and subs getting it right. My daughter wants this system in her first car so I’m off to start planning something new for my BMW X5 . Keep cranking out the great vid’s .
I agree there is a lot of fun in setting up a system. This is what it’s all about
Love this vid! I need sound quality in my car for sure!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good vid! I dig it. I also agree, whenever I meet someone in the car audio community the first question is "SQ or SPL? and I never know what to say because the SPL guys don't approve of me and neither do the SQ guys. so.. I like the balance, to me it has to be quality but fun.
I like both, but prefer simple, hidden systems that deliver great sound with nice bass
Same here balanced quality but loud but not 150dbs of bass
Tony King 😂
Love your vids!
I walked away from the car audio thing in the early 90's for various reasons and all my equipment went here, there and everywhere. Then about two years ago I helped my mother buy a car, which was an '03 Volvo XC70 with the 803 sound system, and I loved that system. It sounds pretty damned good. After a while, I ended up taking over driving her around when she could not get her license renewed. Then the car got sidelined and I started to go through audio withdrawals and decided I should build another system. I don't drive a van anymore so a system like I had before was not in the cards. And I figured I would see what I can build without spending any money. I found some of it in the scrap yard, the first amp was a Rockford Fosgate 350-S pulled right out of the non-ferrous pile at the scrap yard, the second amp was a Blaupunkt Velocity 250 out of a vehicle going to the crusher, along with some wiring. I had to bite the bullet and actually spend money on speakers. Fortunately I drive an extended cab pickup, so I went hunting on Craigslist. Turns out musicians are still broke most of the time.
I bought a pair of Peavey TLS-2X speakers for $150 and I found a pair of JBL DS100 subs heading to the recycling depot and got them for free in a cabinet. A couple of finger holes were dealt with using Gorilla tape on both sides of the cone and put a similar amount on the good woofer and they sound just fine. The head unit is changing constantly at the moment, but each one has been free or traded for something. I had a pretty damnned good system for under $200 !
It has gotten a bit crazy since then, but I am having some good clean (sounding) fun !
But I did give up two thirds of the the back seat. I only needed one seat back there anyways.
Great deals!
legendry video~ super agree
Great video man! Different but still good.
Thanks for the feedback and commenting 👌
I love all types of systems!
Cool vid D! Being an older guy some of my fun is showing younger guys how to build sub boxes that leave room for groceries in the trunk & consoles to hold speakers, drinks & whatever.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@wal love your stuff bud!
yeah I love the video of you just driving and talkin keep that up let's just as good as the amp dyno videos
Hey ill be 50 years old this year, and i still enjoy car audio :)
It's nice to have a video like this once in awhile. But not all the time. We came for the dynos and amp guts! :-D Figure once every other month max IMO.
I hear that. Thanks for the feedback
BigDWiz...you keep doing you..the subs will come...a genuine good guy!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice ride at the end of the video, new ride bro
😬👍
Great vid brother!!!
That's so true! I regret what has happened to my Excursion and I have just four 12s on about 4k. Messed the my truck up over the last 15 years. Time for a rebuild and shooting for the sq more this time.
You're probably my age. My father got me into sound systems. After a family and needing my trunk space, I did a simple system upgrade for my wife. She got hooked. Started with a 6.5" sub, then an 8", now a 12". Designing an enclosure for two 12's that lays flat on the cargo area so she can throw stuff on it when she needs the storage. Happy medium! I think I hit around the 120's as far as dB goes. Oh yeah, she has an EV so the challenge excited me!
Great vid! Personally, I'd watch just about any video you would put out, so I'm cool with this format as well. You made a lot of good points and most of them were things that I considered when planning my current system. I'd say I'm more of an SQ guy that has a little bit of a focus on SPL. I'm 44, and one thing I would like to mention is that I think today it is actually easier to be somewhat of an SPL guy (within reason) than it was back in the day. Today's shallow mount and small box subs are something that really didn't exist back then. I'm running three 10" subs in a custom fiberglass and MDF enclosure that still fits within the storage compartment of my BMW wagon, run off the sub channels from a 25th Anniversary edition Power1000 and it hits hard! But! I still have virtually all of my hatch space except for a slightly built up area of the floor where the amp is mounted. Another thing that makes it easier to be a SPL guy nowadays is the new crop of Class D amps, where big power is possible in a small chassis. Not to mention, these amps are not only more powerful for the size, but you are also getting more watts per dollar. I was just telling someone the other day how I thought my three 10s hit harder than when I had two 15s in an old hatchback back in the day. But, this was mainly because I never seemed to have enough cash to buy enough power for those 15s. LOL!
Anyway, keep the vids coming Big D!
Thanks for the feedback. Great points as well!
Exo for life man!
Big D!whats up man, love your channel and while this is a break from your norm I like it.youve got a lot of knowledge/wisdom about this stuff where youve been around this for awhile,so videos with just you talking about stuff pertaining to the lifestyle/industry will do great
Thanks for the feedback 🤙
My last kid graduated this year .it's TIME! I want a bad ass QC build .
Thats why you have both! My 8 12" walled SPL car and my SQ daily driver with a single 15.
If you can afford to, why not?
These videos rock.
I like your opinion bro. Totally agreed.
Glad to see your just like us that actually check out other CZcamsrs
Most of the “TV” I watch is just CZcams. I enjoy the hobby content better than the junk on network TV
AWESOME VIDEO BROTHER!!!
Yup thats why i just bought a beater van for 500 and im gonna tear it up!!
And dang u got a big hand to block a whole car !! Lol!!
Great video
Thanks brother
i competed in IASCA and USACI up here in Canada for 6 yrs with a sqpl vehicle.. My best spl was 153.5 and my best sq score was high 400s and a daily driver.. Good planning excellent product and take your time. I had so much fun competing with the knuckle draggers then over to the grey poupon side.. Made tons of friends and memories.
We luv ya Big D!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I hear ya kluckin BIG D-chicken, life changes what you want!
I've always gone for mostly SQ. My latest iteration that I am working on now is to maximize the wagons usable space by mounting the sub in the spare tire well and getting bigger class D amps tucked in nicely so I can push a bit more spl out of my SQ setup.
Very good points my man.
👈😬👍
This works. Good content.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Totally agreed with your statement, Back in 2000 I had MTX9500 15's in my BMW 3 series (small) and filled up the trunk, and now my SUV (larger) has only 2 10's..... Always try to have SQ with good bass
good vid big d..I got a birth day coming up in September..and I went from 4 sound stream t615sin my astro van..and I got a nice 09yukon..and a 12bandpass box..I tried to go with 2of the415s from my van..and the feeling wasn't there so I stuck with the 12inch band pass box..and it hammers so..you are so right.. WOWW
Big D great video love the fact that you are trying a different format definitely love the dyno vids but also interested in your knowledge of SQ nobody really does much on this topic I'm around your age and would love you or someone to do some in depth SQ vids ie set up brands processor's etc
Love the car Big D!! Awesome!!!
Thanks, nothing fancy. It’s a 2008 Accord EX-L V6. Only car I’ve ever bought new and also the newest car we currently own!
When I was younger 20 some years ago my dodge Daytona. Was slamming with decent spl around 150. 01. Loud and deep it literally made your vision go blurry
I had a 89' Turbo ES T-Top. Loved that car.
🙌🏼 preach it homie! I’m right there with ya 👀
I'm 25 years old and I completely understand the need for trunk space. I drive an '02 Mazda MPV (glorified minivan), and had four 12s in it for awhile. Reason for this was because I found good deals on subwoofers with ported boxes within a single month.
First one was two Alpine Type R 12s in a custom made ported box, for $100. The subs had clearly been beat on for a few years, and were a bit on the older and more tattered side. But they still hit hard, and sounded great. They just weren't visually appealing, which doesn't matter since I keep them hidden under a black sheet to make them harder to see at night through the factory tint.
The second deal was a set of Kicker Comp 12s, also in a ported box, with a Pioneer amplifier for $100. I wound up replacing the Pioneer with a Rockville dB45 that could push more power.
Running all four 12s made everything shake so damn hard, it was insane. Didn't even need full volume. I was loving it.... for about a month.
I have a three year old daughter, and a beautiful wife. So grocery runs consist of purchasing a decent amount of food to feed the three of us for two weeks. That easily takes up a lot of space in the back of the van on its own. With the four 12s in the way, it became a severe challenge to fit all that food, without damaging something. After about two of these trips, I decided to remove the Kickers and hold on to my Alpines. A buddy of mine was really happy about this decision when a pair of Kickers wound up in his trunk.
Honestly, after fiddling with both of my amps (I have a cheap Dual for the front doors), I really don't notice the missing subs. With things set right, the Alpines can easily handle the work on their own, and provide decent SQ as well as fulfilling SPL. I'm one of those guys who likes his music to sound decent (not at audiophile standards, obviously), but also likes to feel the music. I've always liked bass growing up, because I feel that it sucks me more into the music by making it seem more alive.
So, yeah. Unless you're competing, a lot of these systems that you see online, that people try to replicate, are overkill. Most people probably only run little stock alternators that can't provide enough power to run these overkill systems. I'm kinda lucky in this regard, since my stock alternator is 110 amps. Still not a high output, but it provides enough power for my needs. Helps that I have an extra battery in the back (mostly used for my dashcam when I'm parked, but also nice when I need just a little bit of extra power when I let my system stretch a little bit on occasion).
You said it brother 👍
2004 I had 4 12" in a 4th order, now I only use 1 sub at most. The last time I use 2 or more subs was back in 2007.... Dope video and very truthful!!!
Great video thanx
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great channel
Thanks for the feedback 👌
Perfect Big D, perfect !!!!!!
I like that style.... New type of vids....
Agreed went from multiple 15L7 to just 1W7..... cargo space and heating won out over just being loud!!!
However, the 13W7 still gets plenty loud, on the days I want a little bottom end to my sports talk radio!!!
Nice video.
Very well said..
Yep I’m 30 I’m building a single 15 sundown u15d2 box design undecided and jp23 monoblock and I haven’t purchased my components and other front stages but I am completely on board with the sq/spl mix
Also 1991 rodeo 5 speed all manual windows and locks any ideas or tips on box design would like to hear I want to somehow incorporate some 8 inch woofers or maybe two 10 inch woofs
Im soon to turn 21, but ill be into bass till my last day on earth, heck dont have a family yet, hardly making money, I dont go out and eat even when Im craving something real bad. Call me stupid but my joy for car audio comes first before my hunger. Have a great day, and KEEP ON BASSING!!!
Throughout life, priorities will change, but having good audio shouldn’t be a sacrifice
At 41 I have 2 Soundqubed 12s on 2 Kicker ZX 1500.1s along with 6x9s 6.5s 3.5s and 1" dome tweets running on Rockford 300.4...in an Eclipse...Convertable lol. The canvas top billows like an umbrella in a hurricane. I had to take my trunk half apart just to fit the box in, found a way to squeeze all my components in the spot that the top retracts into, and now I'm catching myself saying "well nobody ever sits in the backseats anyways...I could always build...." and I'm in the country so ppl look at me like my car's on fire when I go bumpin by lol. -Basshead for Life
Nice video
