  • Today, we answer the BIGGEST question about the Flood... Disputing something I see whenever people bring up the notion of the Flood returning, I want to prove that the Flood CAN come back without invalidating the original Halo trilogy.

    I find it frankly absurd, tbh, at the notion that the Flood was definitively defeated by Halo 3. Even before 343 made the Forerunner's lore deeper, I found it hard to believe that they would've only made the Halo array and the Ark the only places where Flood specimens were kept. They're probably hundreds if not thousands of forerunner facilities across the Milky Way that we don't even know about yet that kept them for study just waiting for people to be dumb and release them. And even then The Flood not really ever able to be defeated entirely makes them, of course, even more terrifying. They more than deserve to return the fold in the games at this point, and I can't wait for the day they do again! :)

    5:15. Well sometimes we see flood get wiped out in Halo when a ring fires near it.
    But we also got to consider the fact that Cortana literally said in Halo one that "A Halo ring doesn't kill flood. It kills their food."
    At best it probably just "did a number on the arc " As Cortana would say, but it probably didn't kill a completely.
    And " one single flood spore can destroy an entire planet."

    As much as I too want to see an FPS flood outbreak in Halo again, isn't one of the major reasons why they're not returning is because 343/microsoft decided to make Halo a T for Teens series and they can't bring back the flood with out raising the rating and potentially loosing "Loads of Fans"?
    Kinda wish they'd drop the T thing as Halo needs more of the fear factor and blood back into it :(

    • @Finger112
      @Finger112 Před 4 měsíci +22

      That is pretty much the reason currently why the Flood can't come back and why were only getting lore comics or book lore on the Flood only. If they came back in a visual format in a movie or video game, it would be rated M in Video Games or R in a Movie. And yes for marketing reasons, if you want to market a FPS shooter to more people, you cannot include blood and gore like you did in the earlier Halo games, which the flood induced. So 343 has to decide if a Halo game is not going to include horror elements in a Halo game going forward or stick to the T rating without any of that.

    There’s also a lone infected spartan with a slip space capable ship somewhere out there in the galaxy right now, canonically, thanks to Saturn devouring his son. Finding a crashed condor and having the ship’s computer explain that outbreak to people who didn’t read it would be a cool way to bring them back in a 343 guilty spark style horror mission where instead of feral flood, you’re introduced to an infected spartan led flood.
    As for story, the flood are basically a twisted eldritch GOD, existing outside our perception of existence, but you’d never know that if you only play the games. Having an in game story that highlights that would be awesome, like having the new flood recognize chief and remember what he did last time, and finding out why that is in an effort to defeat them again would be really compelling

    Imagine in a possible campaign dlc or smaller game styled in part after ODST, we play as a spartan 3 (maybe even something cool like a headhunter) who’s tasked by ONI to go scout out a far off colony planet on the fringe of covenant remnant and unsc controlled space which has gone radio silent. It would be a small planet that’s been glassed in the war and is being terraformed to be hospitable again like we saw in Halo 5, so there would be very little life on the planet and only a single space port with any slip space capable ships. Your headhunter spartan 3 (that you would’ve been able to customize the armor of like in Reach) lands in a desolate area of the planet that’s just barely in reach of any civilization for even a Spartan (they’re a headhunter after all, they’re gonna be inconspicuous and there’s a possible covenant remnant on this planet). Venturing into the city during night as stealthily as possible, they notice its barren and empty with literally no living beings present. Making their way to the spaceport your spartan and their onboard dumb AI notice every ship has been scuttled or had their slip space drives hastily ripped out or destroyed. In that spaceport there seems to have been a severe crash too as a condor wreckage lays buried in a wall of the port. You notice a unsc marine friendly ID tag on your radar but as soon as you do it quickly runs off. So you chase after it needing more information on what happened here which leads you to the unsc marine outpost here (one that is notably larger and more well armored than armed than any outpost really needs to be at all, even one near covenant space, and furthermore the building seems to be much more recently built than the surrounding infrastructure, both of which are details that your AI note). Entering the building, your AI makes a remark abt how excited they are to have been assigned to you as this is their first field deployment outside of a ship, to which your spartan somewhat ignores. Using the AI, the spartan gains clearance to the interior of the building (which your AI again notes that the security clearance to some of the levels of the building almost exceed their own). You can’t find the seemingly rogue marine so you plug your AI into the computer archives to which they begin quickly searching and find something that shocks them, they display a video recording to your hud of UNSC security cam footage in the space port control tower. The video plays a there are people in a slight panic talking abt a UNSC condor entering the atmosphere, they try to hail the ship but get no response, we cut to an exterior camera pointed at the ship in the sky which seems to be flying normally although somewhat quickly heading towards the landing platform of the port. But it’s suddenly shot out of the sky and crashes into port wall, cutting out all the security footage. As soon as the clip ends, you hear screams coming from outside the building, your AI worriedly notes that heat signatures outside the building are rapidly popping up. You unplug him and begin to run for the door just to turn around and see that same Marine ID Tag on your scanner but when you lock eyes with him, you finally see it, the flood. You quickly dispatch the combat form (being a Spartan 3 in gen 3, and having been trained as a headhunter along with being an ONI operative, your spartan is immediately clear on what the flood is and how to subdue flood forms). You fight your way out to the entrance but it becomes very apparent by the horde of flood infected civilians (maybe even including flood infected children if we really wanna get dark) that you are not exiting the way you entered. But just when it seems completely doomed, flamethrowers are shot from the stairwells of the main entrance hall, keeping the flood back for just a second but a second is all you need to turn around and make it up the stairs. The marines you meet up there are all wearing combat gear that’s been enhanced with biohazard equipment. They’re led by a chief ONI officer who they take you to upon being ordered by you. The officer is revealed to be the one that ordered the unsc outpost to shoot down the condor using its anti air guns that were previously noted by your AI, furthermore (upon seeing your clearance) he details how some number of months ago, a flood outbreak was recorded on a mining installation not far from the planet (the events of Saturn devouring) and how some flood managed to escape in a damaged condor that had limited slip space capabilities, which gave ONI time to establish bases of operation in the three habited planets within range and on the path of the condor’s last recorded slip space jump. The bases were created as a way to intercept the flood inhabited condor, however ONI had made one huge oversight as they did not account for the fact that the only infected individual on that ship was a spartan 4 in gen 2 armor. So despite believing that they had destroyed the ship and its infected crew when they shot it down, they instead found that the sole spartan pilot had survived and began rapidly infecting the populace. So the ONI officers and his men assigned to this outpost were forced to hide in the secured areas of this building and after a day the flood began making movements toward the other colonies along the planet until they saw your ship arrive and began making their way back here but now in greater numbers. It’s clear that despite how relatively small the infection is due to the low inhabitants of the planet, the planet is still very much lost and they need to get word back to Earth. However your AI is appalled at the fact that ONI would willingly not share this information to the public and even furthermore to him or your spartan. You have to fight your way back to your ship before the flood get to it as that is now the only slip space capable vessel on the planet and could easily make it back to Earth. You would grow attached to the marines accompanying you back to the ship but would lose them one by one as you made it back, eventually you would be left with just a single ONI marine (maybe chips dubbo?) and your AI. But have to fight off the infected spartan before you could get to your ship, it’s an extremely hard fight but your better spartan 3 augments, as well as headhunter training, and vastly superior armor gives you the edge and you make it off world. This is where your AI remarks that he hopes this is the end of any physical contact with the flood, to which your spartan replies that it’s just the beginning

    I personally don’t see the flood being marked as extinct, but it should probably take a good long time for there to be flood at the scale of pre-Master-Chief. Not just a few years, but at least a few generations. Even just a few generations would probably be faster than a fully-built Halo ring firing / having ALL the halo rings fire (I could be wrong though)
    EDIT: I like the 2nd idea for how to bring back the flood, but that flood would be a good bit underpowered in terms of horror because that outbreak would probably not be anywhere near a Gravemind-stage, meaning it would only be around for a mission or two in total, but the flood’s horror (at least how I feel) comes from its threat of never stopping.

    Hey i stumbled on to something when replaying the halo series that i havent you cover anywhere despite being relatively active in the lore community.
    In halo 5 while youre on sanghelios you come upon Ancient hieroglyphs, depicting Elites worshiping what looks like multiple Harbingers. The legs are straight instead of curved like a sangheli and they wear that giant headpiece the harbinger wears.
    Then in infinite theres am audio log of the Marine reacting to what he saw (the harbinger) and Chak-Lok says that once his race would've considered them divine.
    Ive listened to the log before and i thought he was talking about the Covenant but with the Glyphs i dont think so.
    What other things could they be foreshadowing in infinite? They did mention the flood in every 343 halo game so that could be it

Kinda like how Halo 3 ODST was a story in the same timeline just as a more grounded person you play as. I have an idea on how to bring the flood back.
    I really want a Trilogy of Halo games based on the Forerunner Novel Trilogy set 100,000 years ago where we play as Bornstellar AKA Iso-Didact, and as the games progress, Bornstellar gets more & more at odds with his own mind after being implanted with Ur-Didact's personality, trying his hardest not to forget himself while (we the player) he's fighting the flood.
    This prequel trilogy can also expand on the lore of each character beyond what the books and H4 Terminals have shown us, allowing us to see Ur-Didact's slow decent into madness, Fabre's resolve to do what needs to be done, Librarian's plans to preserve the future, and the ancient human "Chakas's" transformation into a forerunner construct, and his involvement in the war before beind re-comissioned as 343 Guilty Spark after it.
    We can see a MUCH MORE aggressive and arrogant Gravemind. The terrifyingly convincing arguments of Mendicant Bias's views in favour of the Flood. The Nature of the Precurdors & how they came to be the most powerful beings in the universe before they created life in our Galaxy, Brand new Flood forms we've never seen before because it's a prequel consisting of infected humans & forerunners.
    The possibilities and potential of a prequel trilogy set during the Forerunner Era is absolutely endless. Speaking of which, we can learn who the endless are at the end of the 3rd game so we get an explination for Infinite.
    And, to top it all off, as the ark is charging, the flood bursts in from all angles in the control room, intent on stopping the charging sequence. In this final battle, we get to choose between playing as Bornstellar, Fabre, Chakas, and our MP character. Each with their own objective as we defend the control room as it's preparing to fire the Halos. The final battle of the Forerunner-Flood war.

    I think the Flood can come back, and if 343i insists on going forward with the timeline, they _need_ to come back. The UNSC, the ONI, the Swords of Sangheilios, and the Banished are aware of its existence and have begun preparing countermeasures, and seeing how they face off against the Flood again is only inevitable.
    With the first infection of a Spartan, we've seen that our countermeasures are woefully underprepared. This and the accidental release of the Flood from High Charity also shows just how quickly an infestation can spiral out of control. The former was a result of arrogance, and the latter being a result of ignorance. What if the next outbreak was intentional to be set loose against an enemy of ONI? What if the next outbreak is more subtle like how Humanity was originally led to believe it was immune and spread by infecting a pet species that was highly sought after? What if Humanity experienced many Smart AIs succumbing to the Logic Plague? What if an infestation is so bad in one part of the galaxy that one faction is desperate to light a Halo?

They were supposed to be this new horror that achieved the same “this used to be a living creature, but is now twisted” vibe, but using digital horror and the Domain instead. Sadly, it didn’t really work and the closest we got to this was strangely in Halo: Escalation’s “Next 72 Hours” storyline.
    Now we have The Endless, where the whole concept of them should be terrifying. But is it? If you look at Infinite concept art of the Xalanyn, basically cosmic Starfish horror, it makes sense you can’t completely kill them. They’ll always return, even through the pulse of a Halo.

    Maybe that can be a whole game. Oni creates very effective anti flood weapons. After an outbreak is discovered on some random planet, they suppress or eliminate it. So the game would be you hunting down and going to other flood infested worlds to put down crazy outbreaks with unique flood forms based on the ecosystem of the planet. It could be rpg ish by making your equipment customized and upgradable based on research you conduct while you fight on each planet. It could even be a bit of a game of trying to find the right tool for the situation instead of using stock weapons for every kind of flood.

    if i were in charge, the idea that I would put out to bring back the flood is a terminal you deploy the weapon... or cortana 2.0... or whatever her name is now, in/onto but it glitches out just a little to connect to a hidden flood storage facility somewhere on the destination you're at (most likely zeta halo if we're still there)

    I think the idea of a trapped outbreak combined with a ship would be the best. You could have an ONI research based ship headed to some foreign system to study some organism and then use that as the reason for them crashing into a hibernating flood (trapped) outbreak. They would then be overrun and the ship could then provide a method for the flood to escape and infect other regions of space.

    I still remember all of the speculations about Cortana being infected by the Logic Plague. There were so many interesting ideas made from this theory. Like; Cortana chose to form the Created because subconsciously she was making an army for the Flood and making the galaxy vulnerable for their return, and she went to Zeta Halo because she wanted to release the Flood from the Containment Zones. Man, that one cutscene in Infinite where Cortana brushed off the Flood was disappointing and made it clear the Flood were never coming back...
    And there were so many hints to the Flood too. I remember Xperia or some other Halo CZcamsr showed a book from a lootcrate that had lore of characters talking about Cortana being infected. And then there were those videos of 343 recording pug sounds that sounded exactly like sounds Flood forms would make

    I think the ending for Halo 3 was never about ending the threat of the Flood, it was about ending the *imminent* threat of the Prophet of Truth activating the Halo Array, which itself was really carrying over from 343 Guilty Spark attempting the same in Halo: CE and Tartarus attempting it in Halo 2.
    The Halos themselves are the main threat of the franchise, not the Flood. When we first step into the game world we think that the biggest threat is the Covenant, and then 343 Guilty Spark shows us the Flood as the biggest threat - only for another plot twist to reveal the Halo itself is even more dangerous.
    I think that's why the Didact's story was probably the best chance 343i had to make a new trilogy with similar impact to the first, instead of the absolutely baffling way they nuked every major plot point between their three main games.

    My favorite thought for a new flood outbreak is something coming from when High Charity was infected, and the flood ship jumping to earth..
    At that point, the flood could have very easily begun a Plan B for its inevitable return.. flood meteorites, or small sub-light ships holding flood within being sent out across the galaxy, to eventually land on colonies years or decades later, or be found by ships and brought onboard unknowing of what's inside

    One of the original reasons the Forerunners kept samples of Flood Forms was the fear that there might be colonies or even a single form somewhere in the galaxy. The rings were originally meant to be 12 to cover the entire milky way but the Forerunners were only able to construct 7. The 7 were not able to cleanse the entire milky way, so it's possible some flood somewhere in the milky way survived since they were so far removed from the firing. It isn't crazy to think they would try to find sentient life by moving further in after the firing. It also isn't crazy to think the flood could arrive from another galaxy entirely or within ours. Not the flashiest way to reintroduce them, but it has lore backbone and makes sense.

  • @olliecrayford
    @olliecrayford Před 4 měsíci

    I can understand actually that the flood survived on high charity. The space station was massive. We blew up possible only part of it saving cortana, and its containment field possibly stopped anything from damaging it completely, even with the ring firing and blowing up.

    Imagine that you are a spartan on like installation 01 where oni experiments on the flood that you have to try to contain but just like the end of reach you fail but instead of you dieing to the flood they hold you captive like the monitor penitent tangent in halo 2 but only if you be the game on legendary difficulty.

    If im not mistaken the flood is inside Zeta halo and I realy don't know how it could breach containment. But if we never killed The Harbinger I could have seen her use the flood against us but that has no lore bucking it up whether she would or not I'm just making stuff up.

    I love the idea of the flood having consumed most of what's outside the explored space that the halo event's take place in and make to where they slowly make their way towards the milky way pushing all the factions into a corner where every one has to work together to survive the flood. A story where earth is lost, Arby loses and the chief has to sacrifice himself to save the galaxy. Where the final test is won but everything is lost

  • @DragonShinobi
    @DragonShinobi Před 4 měsíci

    The most natural way I could think of the flood coming back would be something along the lines of another ODST or Spartan ops stand alone game. Our character/squad is on some ONI mission on a remote moon/planet with frequent meteor showers and is also a forerunner research facility for the Flood and the endless etc... All the endless research is entirely digital/theoretical (for terminal entries/codex stuff) so the Flood can't take them over and we learn about them. During a routine meteor shower a flood infected ship from outside the system crashes undetected into a containment facility releasing not only the flood forms (pure and all) but also other species we haven't seen before, maybe even a ancient human or two.

    A horror survival game, a small outbreak on a single ship.
    You're a marine, sent to the ship to investigate why it's not responding, the most you know is it was carrying airborne bacteria to be reverse engineered for a vaccination. No reason to go in heavily armed
    your team entered wearing gas masks, magnums or sidekick, one takes a shotgun, because "close quarters"
    The ship is empty. Signs of conflict however but that doesn't matter, it's confirmed the air was clear, and your team removed their gas masks.
    Your device disagreed as you checked out the life support systems, the air wasn't clear and... What's this strange mass growing?, Against the actions of your team you keep your gas mask on as you return to the team. Only to find out they're infected, and so is the entire crew.
    You, alone must try to rig this ship to self destruct, deal with limited ammo and likely your oxygen tanks too. Forcing you to either sneak around, find completely different longer routes around various infection forms, or do you dare fight your way through.
    "Boss" fights would likely be your squad mates, who have turned.
    That would probably be a good way to bring the flood back in any shape or form.

    an ONI experimentation to make a bioweapon that goes wrong would be really great. Have it start on a human colony and have it ramp up to either going to a halo or forerunner underground ruins to find a solution could bring back the horror vibes the flood had in the original trilogy.

    Another option - flood have come in from another galaxy it had already infested and consumed. You now have to fight flood predominantly based on completely new species with differing technologies and anatomies. It means they can make any kind of enemy they want based on the source species devoured by the flood.

  • @hunterscrazychannle
    @hunterscrazychannle Před 4 měsíci

    Imagine if the flood could adapt to fly under the radar, imagine a normal marine in your squad slowly betraying the squad and getting them killed in what seems like negligence until it's just you and them and then their face opens up like a flower and unfurls a horrible maw now that it's isolated it's intended prey.
    You could play an ODST or a Spartan working for ONI trying to root out the flood in some truly clandestine missions.
    It probably works better as a show but you can imagine the tension of being placed in a squad as "new recruit" when you're actually there to find out who's compromised.
    Maybe the big twist is all of your superiors are flood playing 5d chess with you as a pawn.
