- Ever had a clutch make loud squealing noises? just like with any car part, it could be a few different problems, but the throwout bearing in a clutch is a possible culprit.
Have you ever wondered what happens when a throw out bearing goes bad in a manual transmission? Here we compare a good vs bad throwout bearing and learn where that sound is coming from.
Hope you enjoy!
Thank you so much for the video. I knew my throwout bearing was bad, but i didn't understood how it all worked. This was very informative and clear to understand.
This is exactly what my car is in the shop for. Thanks for the explanation
great speaking voice, nothing else needed to keep the attention and follow through was crisp and clean. keep up the good work brotha! lets get deep into sequential transmissions and the like
Finally a video that explains it correctly.Thank you.
But it’s not. The bearing does rotate when it contacts the pressure plate bc it’s bolted to a spinning flywheell
Very good video. For someone that didnt have a vehicle with a clutch, to explain in that simple and in detail is very well done. I know my release bearing just went bad, i was looking for a reason not change it hahahaha, but these helped me decide i should
Thank you. This was helpful.
I just had my clutch replaced and the low singing squirrel only happens when the clutch petal is completely released and just the slightest of pressure it stops. The mechanic decided a cylinder slave replacement would get rid of the noise. I later learned from peeps who drive stick, it is the throw out bearing needing something which would the engine dropped again to be corrected to actually complete a proper clutch installment. The mechanic did mention the possibility of this when I picked up the car. The goal was to drive it for 500km to work in the clutch. So I did a road trip with CAA in my back pocket. Gawd help them if that happened eh. It's been a month since the installation and some other work done so now I decided I'm putting it all in writing prior to that appointment.
This is probably a dumb question but - Am I causing more damage to my truck by still driving it this way with the existing problem described in this video??
This is an excellent video. Very easy to understand thank you very much
Great video! I am about to do surgery on a 1992 mazda 323 and the throw out bearing is just starting to squeal. 230,000 miles, I knew it was starting to get a little noisy but getting worse.
Excellent explanation. Thank you so much!
British cars once used graphite throwout bearings, they wore while engaged. But no bearing, just the graphite wear surface. Good reasons to put in neutral at stoplights. More it's used, the more it wears. Cool and different than most
Yes and I had one of those in my MGB that failed in a few months.
Was having a hard time, thanks. Very helpful
Excellent description.
Superb explanation. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your clear explanation, I am totally fall in to this problem 😢😢
Thanks for the video it cleared up the on and off noise.
Dang you're lucky -I wish watching a video will fix my dodge truck
I am a mechanic and have done a few clutch jobs. This morning I took off and said to my self "that's my M.F.ing throw out bearing! Good thing I spent yesterday cleaning it all up.
Thanks man super informative video.
Clear and consice!
Excellent ...teacher
Great video and explanation
Good explanation. Thanks.
This really helped me, thank you!
Question, 10-speed EF trans, getting a rattling sound after coming to a stop, pushing the clutch in that rattle goes away, shifts find no slipping
Great explanation!
Awesome video. Thank you.
That was a great explanation. Now I perfectly understood why my Octavia MK2 manual keeps making such grinding noise during half clutch.
I have a question though.. when we continue to drive it that way with the release bearing noise, will it impact on the clutch, flywheel or the crankshaft?
Many Thanks !
Should you replace clutch assembly bearing and flywheel ?
I have a Mack RD600 with an Eaton Fuller 13sp. The clutch was new 2 years ago but it sounds like the t/o bearing is seized up. As soon as you engage the clutch you here it, it sounds like the PTO but I know that’s fine. The bearing won’t take any grease, and I’m stuck because I wanna sell the truck and not put a whole new clutch in, any suggestions? Thanks
Is the fork noise a screeching type, nails on chalkboard type noise? My son's 1995 Impreza manual does this all the time in Reverse and started it in 1st too now. Thanks!
I subscribed. Great insight.
Well Done 👍
very nice video
Absolute legend thank you
I own a 1991 Chevy S10 truck that when the clutch is engaged, there is a whirring sound. Is this the grinding described in the video? Can this also lock my transmission?
That’s great thanks.👍
Thanks for posting this information. Could a bad or worn throw out bearing cause difficulty downshifting into first gear at stops and gear grinding shifting into reverse? My Chevelle shifts fine thru all gears until I get to stoplight. Will not let me shift to first until I turn engine off. I’ve adjusted clutch as far as I could also.
Steven, try putting it in reverse then first, see if that helps.
My Subaru does the same thing. I’ve found while I’m stopped and trying to put it in reverse, I won’t be able to pull the stick all the way into reverse or it’ll grind. I’ve found while stopped, press in the clutch, shift into first and then keep clutch down take it out of first and put it in reverse and it shifts no problem. Not sure the reason why as i haven’t researched a whole lot into it but any thing you’ve learned about the issue I’d love to hear.
Nice video! Would the transmission oil be able to get its way to lube the throw out bearing?
In my experience no. The TOBs are usually sealed and use grease instead, so trans oil wouldn't help. They're cheap to buy for every-day cars, and get replaced any time the trans comes off of the car, hence the name :) Trans comes off, throw out bearing, put new one on! Hope this helps
Hi need a small clarification recently I changed clutch plate pressure and bearing for sx4 Maruti Suzuki but after removing the air , when I press the clutch pedal, bearing is getting failed and broken into pieces why it's happening like that
How close is the throwout bearing supposed to sit next to the pressure plate?
Hi I drove my car in knowing without oil no warning light came on I noticed the car losing power etc thought it was dirty petrol so topped contine to drive till it started losing power and gear change so finally stopped when I heard a whining noise checked all fluids and seen there was no oil but not warning light finally topped up oil started but now the whining noise is there when I release the clutch car starts ok but bad noise what's happened thanks
Mine is making a squealing and ticking noise intermittently, That either changes or goes away when you press the clutch pedal. But also it's getting harder shift.
And cLutch is not performing correctly and it's harder to shift into gear.
So good
How does the bearing seperate the clutch disc from the flywheel and pressure plate to cut off power to transmission?
The pressure plate is what does that
Thanks
You're very close on the explanation however the center of the bearing is static. the fork applies pressure on the center. The bearing face spins with the pressure plate. When pressure is applied it compresses the bearing and makes it quieter. The compression also changes the resonate frequency of the material deadening the sound. The same way your hand does a ringing bell when you touch it.
You are right, and thanks for pointing this out, shows my lack of experience with understanding clutches. Seeing the pressure plate bolts lining up with the flywheel should have been a dead giveaway that the pressure plate does indeed rotate. I need to do an 'edit' video and link it in there soon as I can! Thanks!
You are welcome. I know how the comment section can be a little mean sometimes and a clutch by itself is really confusing. Without the engine and transmission it's hard to explain how all that works together however if anybody can do it I believe you can. The video on the hydrostatic drive is a perfect example very good work.
Very nice of you. I'm glad there is always new stuff to learn.
@PetersonBrosAutomation very useful video sir thank you! My c60 gearbox on toyota corolla Tsport have a little whine noise when I'm on 1,2,3 gears but in 4,5,6 is completely quite, I hear the sound only with closed windows without music. Also when push the clutch pedal the noise gone, so is gearbox noise right? What can be? (The fluid is on the top and I change it every 20.000 km)
Let it go long enough and it'll seize up on the transmission bearing retainer and it'll snap the retainer off
Nice video, if the throw out bearing is bad should i replace the complete clutch or only the throw out bearing?
I suppose if the clutch kit isn't that expensive, and you're digging into it already, it's probably not a bad idea to just replace it.
If the bearing really is sticking too bad, then yes, that friction will absolutely wear down the spring fingers of the pressure plate.
Good explanation..thanks, on occasion I would get a screeching noise from my MGB and there appeared to be a problem with the pedal being so rough to operate so on disassembly of the clutch found that the carbon bearing of the throwout (release) bearing had completely gone so total clutch breakdown was imminent, also found that at sometime in the distant past the wrong pedal assembly had been fitted, one from a later model..
Great video Thank you
Only reason I took gearbox off was because clutch started slipping after 260 000km ( ~160 000 miles ) and only then I realised that my throw out bearing was bad. Very similar to yours but oddly made no noise.
Thanks for sharing, i been looking everywhere to find the noise issue in my 2011 corolla 6 speed manual and no one seem to have that issue, i get weird like vibration noise when im in 4th 5th and 6th gear if im at low speed and then accelerate to pick up speed i get a very strange noise and then it goes away. Could anyone help?
You wpuld need to define the vibration & at wat speeds exactly it does. Cuz it could be your tires since it's in the higher gears.
2012 Si already had 1st clutch replaced. I’m the new owner it has 140,000 miles on it and it’s making that same noise.
good
This video is wrong according to my Ford 351 with a four-speed because the springs are attached to the flywheel and the flywheel spims the spring spin & the throwout bearing comes in contact with the springs fingers and the bearing spins and the inside that is around the shaft stay stationary because it's on a separate shaft that is bored through the stationary shaft. So the outside spins and the part around the shaft stay stationary because it is locked into the forks anyway it can't spin.
The video is wrong. He is explaining it backwards so to speak from how it is. Throw out bearings are attached to a fork. It's fix and doesn't spin at all with the clutch not pressed. As the clutch is pressed the face of the throwout bearing contacts the pressure plate (which is spinning with the motor). When they make contact the face of the throwout bearing spins. The back inside part of the throwout bearing never spins. Thus why it needs to be a bearing.
Will a throw out bearing cause you to lose my 5th &6th gear
👍
I hear a noise when my clutch isnt pressed and when i release it in gear. When i put it in gear there is no noise?!
Nothing on the throw out bearing turns until the clutch is depressed the the flat area on the bearing makes contact with the "fingers" on the pressure plate.
Can this noise happen only when engine is cold?
Anyone got an video for the same sound but not caused by the throw out bearing
I prefer the UK name which is clutch release bearing
If there was a fitting to grease the bearing you would get triple the life.
I'm changing transmission in my Nissan hard body and can't afford clutch kit but at least want to change throw out bearing while tranny is out
I need a new throwout in my 7th gen 😭
Thrust bearing.
get electric,
good video still.
:P
Cringe
Dude, the bearing has to rotate. The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel….
Check out my part 2 video. It was pointed out before, so I made a follow-up to correct my error.
