"I don't want there to be any stigma or shame attached to their dad's diagnosis or for any form of dementia," she says. Willis is joined by Susan Dickinson, CEO of The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, to bring awareness to the disease.

I'm going through this with my hubby now. We met each other in 7th grade, fell in love in highschool and
married a year after graduation. We've grown up together as a couple for almost half a century enjoying and working through life as a couple, one united front, strong, together. It's bittersweet to walk together with this disease because they're not the same person you knew and they aren't aware of it. Losing them twice mentally and physically. 😢

You can tell that she loves him profoundly and that this is very hard for her, yet she keeps poised which I immensely admire Hoda is so empathetic and delicate with her, as she is always. Huge respect for her and how she goes about her job. Susan was brief but informative, respectful towards Emma and a good interviewee in general. This was a beautiful interview.
Emma is so admirable to come into this show and answer, honestly, some of the most painful and pointed questions anyone can ask. She is fighting her tears the whole time and staying composed for Bruce and her family. All my love and respect for all of them. Go Emma!! Your bravery and outreach is so inspiring. Thank you.

Taking shame away from this disease is so important. To humanize dementia and bring much needed dollars it had to be a superpower, I can only see Bruce Willis in that role. His humor, style and humility cannot be taken by the disease. From Moonlighting to blockbusters, he has given us so much to love and much to lose. Well wishes and prayers for his family, his friends and researchers.

I'm so sorry they're all facing this. I went through it with my mom. I kept a sense of humor and we sang all the time. She didn't forget songs until a couple if months before she passed. The last week was the worst because it physically changed her so severely that when I visited her in the nursing home, I thought they'd moved her to another room and someone else was there...but it was her. That's when I cracked. As I fixed her pillows to straightened her head (more for me than for her), I said. I love you mom. She opened her eyes for the first time in weeks and whispered I love you too. Those were her last words. A few days later she left us to go ve with my dad, the only man she ever loved for over 60 years. Bless anyone going through this.
What a gift God gave you amid such sadness for her to come out of it and tell you she loved you.

I wish I could have told my mum that I truly loved her I wasnt allowed to be with her when she passed away my family stopped me. I wasnt even allowed to see her face for the last time the funeral director stopped me he claimed the family wanted a closed coffin.

But, my mom has visited me many times so keep asking her to come see you and usually feel a cold spot or a touch when you least expect it. She knows what they did. Believe me, she knows. My heart goes out to this dear family. My niece’s husband died of this at age 39 leaving a wife and three children. It is a very painful journey for everyone. What a brave, beautiful and courageous woman Emma is. How beautiful that there is joy in the midst of pain.
I can tell how much she loves him when she talks about him. It is so dang sweet.

How much love will she have when she has to clean his backside and change his sheets every day to get rid of what he did during the night .these people don't know what love is until they have to do the dirty work. Then they put them in a fancy nursing home and write a book about how hard it was for them . They have no idea until they have to clean up their mess.

The Long Goodbye is the hardest loss. Losing who they are and then losing them physically is just heartbreaking. As hard as it is for those who have it, I think it’s hardest on the families and carers. My mother had dementia and to lose her this way and watch the loss of what gave her her dignity was deeply profound and will stay with me forever.
My aunt had dementia and it was so hard to see a different person than who she was. I took care of her for eight years. It certainly takes a toll on caregivers but I often think what it must have been like for her living in her own world. Toward the end of her life she would get aggressive and yell at me. Something she never ever did before. I miss her alot. 😢
I dont deny it's hard to see loved ones declining, but a sudden death is something else

Each loss is traumatizing in its own way. Each different and so painful in its own way. With a loss where dementia is involved sure you have your loved one with you still but the anticipatory grief is really hard and out of this world. Death is just the worst in any form when it rips a loved one away from us.

I am dealing with her pain. It's not easy. Unless you are spiritually evolved or have been a caregiver, you won't know the pain.

By just looking at her, her body languange, her voice, her sad eyes as she responds to the questions asked you can actually feel her pain for the love of her life, for their daughters, and for herself.
Clearly, this is not what she wanted, but she is taking care of him with love and excrutiated pain inside her, for him, their daughters and herself. This is REAL LOVE, for him and for their daughters to feel it!! It's a heartbreaking experience; sadly as time goes by, it won't get any easier! Praying for strength for the whole family!!

What a kind thing to do, to put your pain out there, for others' benefit. Their love shines through those family photos. I hate that life can be so cruel -- it must be so hard to "look up" from the grief long enough to see the beauty, but I'm glad she's trying. All I see is an incredibly strong woman, wife and mother. A childhood friend of mine is a friend of Emma’s and I am told that she is a genuinely wonderful person. I have so much respect for how she and Demi have come together to support each other and be one big family. Keeping her and her girls in my thoughts as they go through this with Bruce❤️

Just went through this with our mother for 4 to 5 years. We just lost her in February 2023. It is absolutely devastating and an unimaginable emotional toll to watch a loved one very slowly decline over a period of time. Much love and hope sent to Bruce & his family. I know from experience this is extremely difficult & his wife is one amazing, wonderful woman sticking by his side !

My husband died 3 yrs ago with this diagnosis. I seem to walk through it alone in 2020 with this very sweet man. Communication was just lots of love and kisses. Your interview helped to hear someone else saw these symptoms. I wish I could have him back. I know he was in there and he knew things were changing but he continued to smile always for me.

Being a new caretaker during the pandemic was overwhelming, I’m sure. Prayer sent that God comforts you and lifts you all up. So glad he showered you with as many us and kisses and hugs as he could.
My father died a year ago and every evening he visits me in my head when I work in the kitchen . He likes my organization there and we talk . Weird , I know . But I wish it for everyone . It's a nice way to deal with his dead . Well , " dead " , he isn't really dead .

This is a horrible disease. My father had it. Watching him slowly die was heart wrenching and changed everyone in our family. May Mr Willis be surrounded by his loved ones until the end. No words can describe what’s happening. May God help everyone involved through this.

Emma is doing a great job making more people aware of FTD and in doing so, just maybe more research can happen in finding a cure.
I’m so glad there is awareness of different kinds of dementia. I lost my dad in 2019 to a specific type of dementia, very similar to Bruce’s. It was called Lewy body dementia. It’s was very heartbreaking for him and us to go through it. My mom was a very strong loving wife and caregiver for my dad. They had 4 children, my self included, and we were strong for him through it all. But it was very saddening. I feel for Bruce’s family ❤

Bruce Willis' wife is an angel. He and the rest of his family are so fortunate that he married such a loving and intelligent lady. We are going through this right now with my elderly mom. I am her caretaker for the last 3 years. She just had a seizure and stroke on Monday, out of the blue. This is a heartbreaking disease on a family. Watching a loved one lose their memory and feel loss, is horrific. We just make sure she knows she is safe and loved.

Any type of dementia is so cruel. It really is the long goodbye. I lost my Mom to Alzheimers on 1225/20. I'm glad she didn’t endure it for too long, but being a caregiver is excruciatingly hard. Love to Emma. Bruce and their family.

On my mom's death certificate it's listed as cause " dementia". She said it perfectly “it’s a family disease”. What helped me is education through the Alzheimer's Association.Prayers to all facing this challenge. 🙏💜

My mother was diagnosed with unspecified dementia two years ago and I can feel Emma’s pain through the screen. No one teaches you how to walk with your loved one on this journey, especially when you have small children or other priorities that often conflict with the emotions and responsibilities that come with being a care giver/partner. I’ll keep Emma, Bruce and all families dealing with this in my prayers ❤
I've been watching, and being supportive of a neighbor whose husband was diagnosed with FTD a couple years ago. Grateful that she reached out early to get support from other's dealing with this. Having his personality change so much has been so difficult as well as the extra physical care he requires. 🙏🏼 (He was ~60 when diagnosed, my age too)

Kudos to Bruce Willis’s wife for speaking about her and her husband, and families journey. She is truly a class act, and her ability to speak about the struggles with this disease, really is wonderful! I hope it helps all of you out there, that are dealing with this…..that you are not alone, and there are people to reach out to that are in the same situation. Being honest, and open, even though you can hear the struggle in her voice can help others feel that they are not alone, and there are people you can reach out to for strength and support.
This is an UGLY disease. My mom died from Alzheimer's and I was her care giver and I went from being her best friend to being a stranger. The family suffers more I think and after they are gone we still try to accept what just happened. We lose our person two times, one with the disease and than death. This is a horrible disease. I cared for my Mom who had Dementia and eventually Alzheimers, for 6 years. It was devastating to watch her deteriorate from the vibrant, loving Mother and friend she was before this disease. I feel so bad for Bruce and his entire family. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia so it is dementia. It's devastating. My 90 year old mom has it and I am watching her get more and more frail and seeing her remember less and less. :( The great thing is that she's still the same gentle and kind person that she has always been.

She has been extremely generous by allowing Demi to participate in the family over the years. Emma has had great insight into the well-being of her daughters and Bruce's daughters from his first marriage. Obviously, she is not jealous of Bruce's first wife and has her husband's best interests at heart.
My husband died of this decade 19 years ago.. my son was 11. Imagine going through it poor. God bless you and your family 🙏🏻

Bruce is fortunate to have a loving partner and family, and I’m sure the fortune he has amassed helps. Spare a thought for the great number of people world wide suffering all sorts of health issues alone and broke.
In a case like this one, money only helps with respite care so the family can get a break. “Spare a thought for the poor” is exactly what Emma is doing, giving her support to the association they mentioned and having the second woman come speak about the disease. I hate when people bring up wealth as though it’s something magical that keeps people from suffering. No amount of money will help as long as there is no cure and the family STILL has to watch their loved one suffer the progression of this disease toward their death. Being poor doesn’t make the suffering “worse”, either.

My Mother is in middle-stage dementia, whereby she can call me repeatedly throughout the day from her Assisted Living facility to share with me the same story. I don't mind. I cared for my grandmother for her last 2 years, while Dementia took over. I can't describe how cruel this disease is and it changed all of us forever. It is absolutely a "family" diagnosis. Some days, it felt like it was harder for us than it was for her. Thankfully, she seemed to at least be happy, in her own way. My heart goes out to anyone who is going through this. I wish I had advice to lighten your burdens. Just try and take care of yourself as much as you can & celebrate the little moments whenever you can. ❤
You have to experience this to truely understand. Its one of the only deseases where you grieve for them before they've passed. Everything that made them who they were is gradually stripped away until you're left with a shell of a person.. I watched this happen to my wife..
I love that he’s has support. My grandmother had this (my aunt now, her daughter) and everyday was/is a trial. My prayers go out to this family as well as Bruce. Just stay positive and never let the patient see your frustrations (because they will come) and always strive to make them smile and remember what they can.

God bless Bruce and his family. My now 89-year-old mother was diagnosed with dementia 8 years ago. I have been living with and caring for her every since; it is the hardest thing our family has gone through outside losing my brother when he was 18 to drowning and my father dying of stomach cancer in 2014. We cherish every day and every moment that we have with her.

I'm sorry for your loss. It's great that you're taking care of your mother, I know it's hard, I also take care of my mother (she doesn't have dementia though). Through all the hard times, we're closer than ever and cherish every moment together.

Dementia is a very heartbreaking disease. My mother suffered from this and her decline was quick. Her not knowing who her beloved family was and not remembering all the memories we shared. This is why they call this the long good-bye. Prayers and strength to all who is going through it.

I lost my mom to this illness over the course of 6 years. Very tough to witness and go through with a loved one.
Obviously she’s in great pain emotionally. I’m sorry she’s having to go through this. So hard watching your partner deteriorate.
My brother passed away last year from Dementia. It is utterly heartbreaking to watch a loved one deteriorate, and to make it worse, his wife emotionally divorced him because she could not handle his disease, therefore, not keeping him safe from the fall that killed him.

My mom had early on-set Alzheimer’s - at the early stages, it was heartbreaking to find her, sitting all alone, slightly sobbing due to her internal frustration w/ her realization that she was losing her capabilities - she was aware, of her losses, yet really couldn’t verbalize her emotions, thoughts, fears, etc
My Mom is currently in the depths of this horrible disease. It’s truly heartbreaking.
My dad died January 31 2022. He has dementia caused by a stroke and effected his frontal lobe too.
So everything Bruce and his family are going through.
He was a special kind of person, he had a magic to him.
Our little family trinity was broken.
And the 6 years of his decline our roles reversed. I was the parent and he was the child.
When he died I lost my best friend, a mischievous brotherly figure, and he was also like my son. He even called me his father.
I never thought I would be so without peace in my life without him.
I tell people what happened and they look at me like I'm insane from another planet. I hope that Emma Hemming Willis can make people understand the effect it has on the family and the victim of dementia.
Bruce is indeed a beloved actor. It's sad that he is struggling with this illness.
He has a great wife.

Sadly our mom suffered from FTD. My father was her care partner and took on all of the responsibility. They shared most of the ups and downs of FTD alone as they are very private people and this was my moms choice. The one thing I wish we knew was what they were struggling with so we could have supported them sooner. FTD is a very scary disability when you know what’s going on even worse when you don’t. Thank you Emma and your family for making the decision to share this very emotional and physical struggle of FTD, many people will learn from this.🙏
That’s my situation with my wife as well… I owe it to her to be the best caregiver possible.

Thank you for your willingness to bring the awareness of FTD. My 59 year old sister passed in March from FTD after 3 years from diagnosis. The hardest part was getting a diagnosis. Her internist would not listen to us. She diagnosed her with anxiety and wouldn’t refer us when we asked for a CT scan or a referral to a neurologist. The other issue was no one had worked with FTD patients. Finally, the care for a patient with FTD is extremely expensive. I hope that more internal medicine doctors will learn more about the signs of FTD and take in what the family is telling them about the patient with the symptoms of FTD.

@@jennychurchill2716 Yes, FTD often occurs much earlier than Alzheimer's or other types of dementia. This is one of the problems with diagnosis; people aren't aware that FTD can be early onset. My mother-in-law had FTD. As the doctor in this interview says, it took about four years to get a diagnosis. She seemed way too young to be exhibiting the symptoms she was exhibiting.
My brother has FTD. We've been dealing with this for 8 years. Needless to say, it's been very hard to watch this disease progress.

Bruce has been in my life for years, with movies and such. I found him as a grounding stone and I am crying. I just want to tell the family that to stay tall and firm for him. We all love him and want the best for him. Blessed be!
My Mom had the same diagnosis. It was a long bittersweet time. She couldn’t talk for 2 years. And eventually was in a diaper and drinking a bottle. 4 year battle.

I've been taking care of my mom with Alzheimer's for 15 years. This is a horrible disease and devastating to the family. It breaks your heart every single day. The only positive for us is knowing my mom feels the love and safety that comes with being surrounded by family. She still knows us because we are always here.
You have my deepest sympathy. My Mom passed last year from this at the age of 85. I was her daughter and caregiver and its going to take me some time to recover from it. I was the only family member she knew and didn't want anyone else in the house and would scream at them to get out of her house. She became an escape artist getting out of the house and not knowing where she was going. I had to call the police about 3 times to find her. She did this all day long, just taking off and I couldn't stop her. She ended up a few times in the hospital from falling. So I hope your able to get help and don't have to do it alone.

My mother passed from cancer when I was 15, and during her battle she developed a brain tumor which pushed against her brain and made it so that she basically had dementia. She only recognized me... that was hard, and that's why I resonated with what you said.
One night I had made the decision to stay with my mom instead of going home with my father and sister. It wasn't like anyone could see it coming, or out of the ordinary at all, but that night the tumor had apparently grown enough to push on her brain, and she woke me up at 11:30 or so and said "your dad and your sister didn't make it home, they died in a crash" just as casual as if she had told me "you know, the sky is blue, and the earth is round". Obviously I was just sitting there in shock. Where did that come from and why would she say that? So I just listened to see if she said anything else and she did. She was CONVINCED, beyond any doubt, that they were gone. She kept saying "we need to call" so I did, but even when my father answered and told her he was okay, and even woke my sister up to tell her she's okay, my mom didn't believe it. She played the part, and then hung up and said "I just talked to ghosts". Mind you I'm 15 very confused, so I'm just trying as hard as I can to explain that we're all okay. The next day she was brought to a psych hospital and from then until her death she thought I was the only family member she had left. It hurt my father and sister, and hurt me just as much to have to be the "mediator" between them speaking, because she "didn't want to talk to the dead". She often kicked them out of the ward and asked me to stay because they were dead to her. Right up until the last day she never even thought they existed and I was holding her hand. Life does crazy things to us, but I truly hope you've gotten better. I can tell you, it took my awhile to wrap my head around the craziness of what happened, and the tragedy, but I am doing well these days and can't complain. You'll be okay 😊
